Last week I ordered a new memory foam mattress.I was really looking forward to being comfortable and cosy.
We,ve had one of the toppers with our sprung mattress for a few years now and I loved it.
It arrived packed like a roll of carpet. My husband and I hauled it up the stairs, laid it in a spare bedroom and waited for the magic to unfold. The instructions said to leave it for at least 24 hours to settle.By the next afternoon it was plumped up to perfection..I just couldn't wait to enjoy my first night of total comfort.
I manoeuvred myself into bed as all we RA suffers do and lay down.
It was similar to lying on a bag of sand.It had no bounce or give whatsoever.Thought I would turn over and try lying on my other side. The mattress seemed to have me in an iron grip.I had to more or less claw my way out.Turning over felt like a workout.
Waited for my husband to come to bed.He leapt into bed and then came to a halt. The dreaded mattress had him in it's grip too.We must have looked like a couple of beached whales.
I know that memory foam is a great leap forward but it has certainly taken the spring out of both our steps. xxx

Oh dear that's awful? We have one and absolutely love it but some people find them too hard and hot making and claustrophobic I know. I also read that they give off chemicals that some blame all sorts of things on but ours was so expensive that there's no way I would ever forgo it now - in fact I dread going on holiday to non memory foam matress rooms these days as I love our bed so much. If you can't bear it then sell it on Ebay as one of those experiments in life that failed? TTx
We have an electric bed and we find it difficult when we go away as we can't get a bed as good as ours.
I can just imagine you in the grips of the dreaded foam mattress. I bet it was hilarious and i hoped you both laughed like i am doing thinking about you two struggling with a mattress.
I have a double memmory foam mattress in the spear room. I absolutely love it (as I have slept on it one night to try it out), but hubby says its makes him too hot. I would like it that when its time to change our current mattress, we get a memmory foam one like whats on the spear bed. Ours is 16+4" memmory foam on top, if that helps. Like yours it arrived packed in a role. It took a hour to plump up once we released it and it came in its own cover.
I have also seen ones with air holes in them as over heating apparently is a common problem, so there is time to work on hubby yet.
We bought ours from the shopping channel ideal world tv (18 months ago). Perhaps your depth of memmory foam maybe less than 4"? you should be able to get your money back as you have 14 days to change your mind???
I bought a Rest Assured sprung memory foam mattress online, just after I had my operation online, it was expensive, but I was'nt able to shop for it, so just judged by another bed I had slept in.
It took a few noghts sleep before I got used to it, and I ended up putting my old memory foam topper on it. It is fantastic now we are used to it, always hard at first to get used to it.
My hubby absolutely refused a full memory foam mattress as the cheap ones are not good and we could'nt afford the really expensive, so compromised with sprung/ memory foam combo. Hubby is a very hot person in bed, and I mean in the tempeture sense, so memory foam would not suit him, he would probably ignite or self combust!
thought i would join in with the mattress blog just bought a combo of latexfoam mattress plus topped with a stitched on memory foam top its FABULOUS cant wait to go to bed its so comfy, didnt think it would be so wonderful.I have always had a sprung mattress which i had for years, increasingly my pressure points shoulders hips etc were getting more painful,so decided to buy new bed ,now feel like i have had a good nights sleep, dont find its hot in fact when my feet are very hot i find a cool spot its brill so i would recomend one of these beds.
Interesting blogs. We are hoping to buy a new bed this year with full memory foam mattress. We have the topper at the moment which I love but the full mattress does always feel harder in the shops. Xxx
I love your description of being held in the iron grip of your mattress, very funny. A few years ago I bought a memory foam pillow in the hope it would ease my painful neck. I remember my head sinking slowly into it and then being clamped in place. It was also so hot that it made my head really sweaty. Needless to say my very expensive sweaty memory pillow ended up in the bin...Never again
I don't think I took enough care to check the depth of the mattress before I ordered it.Think that might be the problem.
When I woke up this morning I was teetering on the edge of the bed.Maybe I tried to escape during the night.xxx
I invested in a Tempur mattress some years ago and got a free travel mattress topper with it. I couldn't be without either now as I find a standard mattress unbearable on my joints. When my back is very inflamed, lying flat on my bed is the only thing that brings relief!
I have to say 'I love my bed' and give out a happy sigh of relief whenever I lie down on it (sad but true!]. My daughter did complain when she slept in my room when I was away that it made her too hot.
