Best kind of mattress ?

I am newly diagnosed with RA and am having trouble sleeping as I just can't get comfortable. I currently have a memory foam mattress bed but am wondering if switching to a conventional softer pocket sprung type would help at all ?

hi, i bought an adjustable bed and it was the best investment i have ever made....the mattress is soft and like sleeping on clouds and it is such a help to be able to raise and lower each end when i am in a bad way and struggle to get up....also if you state that is for a medical need you get the vat off when you buy one so even better....there also plenty of second hand ones out there too.....good luck x

I bought a tempur mattress but even though it cost a lot my husband does not find it that easy to move, which while for me it is so comfortable, for him I think it adds to his discomfort.I reckon we will be looking for a softer mattress next year.

I used to have loads of back, hip and neck pain and didn't realise how much difference a new bed would make. I swapped from a firm orthopaedic to a pocket sprung and it was the best money I've ever spent. Mine is a Rest Assured with pocket springs and a latex top. I love love love it :-)

We have a pocket sprung memory foam mattress,so soft and your body moulds into it,we had an orthopaedic one before that and for me personally it was too hard for my poor old joints :))) love Michelle xxx

I have just gone back to a pocket sprung othopaedic mattress is is medium and supportive,I was having neck and shoulder problems til I changed it is very deep mattress from the yorkshire company durabeds.. so think beds and mattress chosing is a slightly individual thing.. I went and lay on several.. correct support is you should just be able to almost get the fingers on your hand into the space thats the small of the back when lying on the mattress.. if more easy its meant to be too soft.. If too difficult to do this its meant to be too hard x

Hi, my sympathies, it can be so hard getting comfortable. I bought a mattress topper from a well known bed linen company and it is like sinking into a cloud! It's not tempur, just a bit like putting a duvet beneath the bottom sheet.

Perhaps worth a try.

I have a medium sprung silent night bed mattress with a dreams memory foam topper. I found it difficult to turn on a memory foam mattress and have found the option of a sprung mattress gives you a bounce to turn with the memory foam cushioning your joints. xx

Hi Angel

Buying a new bed is one of the most important things we ever buy as we spend so long in one (if we're lucky enough to sleep well)!

We bought a new bed a few weeks ago from bensons, and being as I am heavier than my hubby and I am the one with all the joint problems, he wanted to make sure we could try plenty of different ones till I was happy with one.

I would recommend going to bensons and trying them, evening you go somewhere else to buy, you'll know what is comfortable to buy.

Take care and angel blessings

I was referred to Occupational Therapy and they provided me with a mattress topper. It's not memory foam, but something else and it's very comfortable. Before you spend out lots of money, it may be worth seeing what's recommended by OT and what's available for you.

Thanks for the replies to what I now realise was a fairly pointless question as what suits one person may obviously not suit someone else. All the best.

Not a pointless question at all - without asking it, how would you have found out that different things suit different people? I hope you find the mattress to suit you, and also the medication that helps you get easier sleep.

Good luck,
