Trouble sleeping

Can anyone advise me about a comfortable mattress!! My husband and I are looking for a new mattress but finding it hard to agree on one that we both find suitable!! As an RA sufferer I like a softer bed as I’m always tossing & turning trying to get comfy and avoid stiffness but he likes a hard mattress which I absolutely hate. Has anyone encountered a similar problem and can advise on a good mattress brand that helps with a good nights sleep. Am desperate for a good sleep!! Thanks

The thing is with mattresses it’s very much down to individual preferences. You could get numerous different suggestions😊There have been posts on this recently if you do a search for them.

I would go and try some out in a shop or buy from somewhere that will let you trial one for a month. Good luck.

Thanks yes will search for that and absolutely agree it’s down to personal preference. Just wondered if other RA sufferers were able to recommend a particular brand.

That’s part of the problem, no two people with RA will necessarily find the same mattress comfortable even if they both have RA they will differ.

I had the same problem with my ex-husband so we bought two 3ft mattresses zipped and linked so he could have firm springing and I had soft. We also bought single duvets and bedding so he could not steal the whole lot from me. It was the perfect arrangement.

A very German arrangement and I'd just add avoid Tempur so hot at night it needed to have a topper and I'm not impressed with it despite the high price, in fact the IKEA bed and mattress in the spare room is so much nicer so worth looking at IKEA.

I’ve just bought a new mattress. I was using a Casper mattress. It was dreadful for me. It was too firm and it wasn’t a mattress you would want to lie in on. It also got ridiculously hot during the night.

Before that I had a Tempur bed, that was made from two beds joined together, we did the separate duvets etc for that which I quite liked - it was pretty much the same, in that it was firm and too hot for me. I think they have more in their ranges now. I’ve had a very expensive horsehair mattress - too firm too but I think it was an orthopaedic mattress which I definitely don’t need.

This one came from John Lewis, it’s a pocket spring one - middle of the range. Medium to soft but not too soft. No foam involved! It’s on a sprung slatted base. I think it will be ok but I’m prepared to get a divan base if necessary.

Choosing a bed has always been a nightmare for me - fortunately my other half doesn’t care what he sleeps on so it’s down to me.

I didn’t mention that I’m not a fan of memory foam as I find it makes me too hot. I prefer pocket sprung mattresses made of natural fibres. The one I mentioned earlier was a Vi-Spring and although expensive it was worth every penny for the comfort it gave. I was sad I had to sell it when I got divorced and moved into a smaller property. But I bought another but smaller Vi-Spring that I’ve had for 17 years and it’s still in excellent condition.

I believe many bed places offer and one side can be soft and one side can be firm.

My ex and I had a zip and link king size and his mattress was medium and mine was firm.

We used to have a memory foam topper but when we moved we bought a new bed with soft mattress. Now I have constant bad back n toss n turn.Waiting for delivery of new med/ firm mattress without buttons.Have a look at ones that you can have different mattress for both of you..will be more expensive but worth it and try before you buy

We bought one from The Wool Room, last year. I love it! So comfortable and because it’s wool it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter without being over warm. It is the first mattress that my husband doesn’t wake up in a sweat. It was expensive but so worth it.

To be totally honest we tried for ages to find one to suit both myself and my husband but the best solution, regarding a good nights sleep for us both, was separate beds. Sounds drastic and was very strange to sleep alone to start with , especially after 34 years married, but the improved sleep quality for us both makes up for it .

Nope, we are the same. Been married for nearly fifty years. For the past three years we have had separate beds and then get together in the morning before we get up.

It was either that or divorce because other half woke me every night - he breathes loudly and at a different speed to me - sounds weird but that was difficult also if I’m woken up as opposed to waking up naturally and dozing off again I wake up feeling like a part of my brain has been switched off, really dreadful. Besides I like to sleep in total black out and my other half hates that. Separate beds are the way to go 😉

You really do need to try them out before you buy. You can get two different mattresses on your bed. I would advise avoiding memory foam as they are very hot. Sadly, no-one can recommend one because everyone is different. What suits one person might not suit another. I hope you find, what you want. x

Vi-Spring zip and link. You can have two different mattresses and they last for years.

Suggest going to several different shops to try them out (if you can). We bought a new mattress last year. One side has a very thin memory foam on top of a sprung mattress which is a medium firm. I always have a teddy bear mattress cover on the top as my joints are so painful and I have had pressure points on my feet.

When it so hot a few weeks ago, I took the teddy bear cover off and then remembered that the mattress has a cool to feel underside. Hubby turned the mattress over and it is wonderful, so cool to sleep on and if you move/turn during the night another cool space.

I bought a 7.5cm memory foam topper for my medium/soft mattress. It was an “Oh at last!!” moment. I sink in painlessly even on a part that is hurting and am able to sleep. The Foam Shop. They take your weight and build and discuss the options. You can have some ordinary foam and some memory foam.

There are different strengths of memory foam. It comes in a net cover and a quilted fabric cover. I unzipped my fabric cover and the mattress became even more comfy without being restricted. It is all warm in winter/cool in summer.

Margy.

Hi, l am the same, my husband prefers a harder mattress. We have a zip and link mattress it’s probably the best mattress we have had. My half is soft and the other is medium. So all concerned can try and sleep. Good luck finding a new bed
