We've just bought new beds which are memory foam encapsulated. A sprung mattress wrapped in the memory foam, the edges don't crush down so badly and are very comfortable as the foam sinks under your weight but the springs give good support. My only problem is that they are too heavy for me to lift when making the bed so I'm feeling a bit pathetic at the moment. I hope this helps

We have bought a tempur mattress after trying out a looky likey one. Both were much better than previous sprung mattress. I was good with both, do find it very warm though, but my husband who doesnt have RA found looky likey one no good at all. Dont know if that helps.

I slept on one once when staying with friends for a week, and my back has never hurt so much. And I slept badly as I felt submerged so kept waking up with suffocation dreams..... Never again!

Thats not right to feel submerged. How unpleasant. There are different firmnesses (not sure thats a word). Maybe if too soft that may have been why.

Ditto, I feel the same, also air mattresses in hospital that get unplugged and start to deflate - horrible feeling!

They can be very hot making, especially so if you have such issues normally. We have one against a wall in the spare bedroom, brought it back with us but decided to buy all new. My h gets terribly hot in bed anyway, but the memory foam one took it up a few notches, no good for Spanish summers! Whichever mattress we have there's always a base sheet coloured patch where he lies which of course means all over as I top & tail & turn the bed regularly, or rather we do it together because the current one is so damn heavy. No good for my back either, much prefer our pocket sprung one, though that's ready for replacing after 4 years, h just destroys any mattress! Never heard of any mattress causing flare ups though, what makes her think it's related? Is she not just poorly controlled just now & it coincided with buying the mattress?

I love my memory foam and sprung mattress and is one of the only items of furniture I will bring back from Spain with me. I have a king size one but sleep on my own so when it gets hot I just roll to other side of the bed. I have one of those lift up storage bases but as others have said the mattress is too heavy to lift. Plan on getting new base when back in UK!

I have a memory foam with springs combination too and it can make me very hot. I experimented in the very warm weather by lying on top of the thin duvet instead of just a sheet and that improved it so I’ve bought a cool flow mattress topper .This has made me cooler.

Can you tell me where you bought a Memory Mattress. Is that one that helps you remember or one that stores all your dreams? I could do with both.

My new memory mattress is in my barn as it was just too warm, I wasted £500. Will hunt for a nice pocketsprung with a memory topper. So much for bensons salesman telling me it was a nice mattress

We went to Bensons to test out mattresses & found the one we wanted, a Silentnight. It was horrendously expensive even though salesman tried hard at reducing it so I wrote down the details & when we got home I searched the internet to find the best value. Cheapest by far (by just over 50%) was the Silentnight official eBay store, delivered direct from their warehouse. They took it to our bedroom, took off the packaging & placed it on the base. Would recommend them.

interesting read. Think a pocket sprung sounds good. Have a dulopillo ( not sure that's the spelling) its well past its best. Its been brill. Spent a day bed bouncing and couldnt top it.Still looking for an alternative. I also get hot but, love the idea of a memory foam topper. Will keep watching this.🏨 x

Hi Elswick

All I can say is, like your friend I bought a pocket sprung mattress from IKEA. O we £700. Was caused great discomfort and pain, as mattress was too hard. Luckily, they provide a 90 day exchange policy, which I took them up on. Several days later. Despite the change, joints were still horrendously painful. Two weeks ago after searching the web. Purchased a gel memory foam topper, which apparently is cooler than the bog standard memory foam. Had to air it for a couple of days due to chemical smell. However, having used it for over two weeks I can say there is a significant improvement in my sleep, as I actually get some now. I do still have pain, but obviously that's the condition. But the mattress topper has provided me with the comfort and support thst I so desperately needed. It was £150 from Dunelm. Just need to buy deep fitted sheet to accommodate the additional depth. However, the additional mattress does hinder bed making due to the weight, but Its worth the battle..

Hope your friend finds a solution.

Shall we all go to ikea for a bounce? Visiting will be my next mattress as they are so comfortable

Haha. I'd probably fall to bits if i bounced!! Best place I go for sure. Just make sure you lay on the beds for at least 15 minutes before deciding. Know it sounds mad, but I got it so wrong even though I visited several times. Amazing returns policy makes it work it though. Collected my mattress and bought the replacement without question. Happy bouncing!!

I would fall asleep if I stayed on the 🛏 mattress for too long 💤 💤

Yes. Know what you mean. It was very hard not to. Kept forgetting I was in the middle if a very big and busy shop until people kept making daft comments at me.

in reply to Loura

Have to try before you buy. I have found that the larger independent stores that carry stock are very good on price. Will get another visprung when I move

I have taken the last year to pay for my mattress and I feel it is worth it. It is firmer but has memory foam and the platform raises my legs and/or head. I raise my head a bit or my sinuses bother me. Being able to raise my legs is a blessing. It provides a great comfort. This was something I couldn’t afford but I’m glad I did it regardless. Your friend should be able to keep the mattress. But should look into the adjustable platform. I agree that it could be the cause of flares.

I bought a new Relyon memory foam topped mattress with pocket springs in Febuary to replace my 8 year old mattress, same make and model. I thought my old mattress was making my back worse as it needed replacing. The new one felt comfortable and supportive, till I spent the night on it, could hardly move in the morning, this went on for a few months, not sure how I have put up with it, couldn't send it back as not one of those deals. It's heavy and hard to make as very deep, it doesn't make me hot though. Just about getting used to it. Got my pain clinic appointment on the 27th Sept so fingers crossed they can give me an injection. X

I know from using memory-foam pillows that a whole mattress would be very hot. Eight years ago I chose Hypnos, with which I am still very pleased indeed. Very expensive, but extremely comfortable. Rather heavy, but I can turn it when I am well. The only problem with it is my own fault, because I had drawers underneath, which stop air-flow & increase heat. Nice in winter, but not so much in summer!
