Thyroid problems can so often be an associated factor in so many conditions e.g. fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, absorption issues such low vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron and more, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep issues and many more.
I'd be grateful if your forum would consider accepting a post containing an e petition for improving NHS thyroid treatment options.
I myself have suffered from the above for many years having always thought the they where all unconnected. However, my symptoms have now improved significantly following my own research and a change in thyroid treatment. Please see the link below.
This is a very interesting post and I have noticed a few times recently people mentioning that thyroid problems may be part of depression. I don't know if doctor's routinely check for this when you say you are depressed before giving anti-depressants? I would have expected them to carry out a thorough health check first. I am pretty sure I've been tested and it can back normal . I do however have chronic sleep issues and fibromyalgia type symptoms so I will research this further now. Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. Gemma X
I think a complete health check should be carried out however, in my experience this is not always true. It is important to note that even though your thyroid test may be in the normal range this doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have an underlying thyroid problem.
Most of the time GPs do not carry out comprehensive thyroid testing (I've had to do my own research and I'm only now trying again to obtain help). I don't want to overload you but if you want any more info feel free to contact me, Thyroid UK or the HU thyroid forum.
I asked for hormone testing, ie oestrogen/ progesterone levels re my depression. The GP also strongly recommended thyroid testing. This was the fourth GP I had seen from the practice in the last three months ( not being fussy just the way it is) . I think it is quite hit and miss the knowledge and who you go and see. She wanted to do this ahead of prescribing anti depressants whereas the other GP's just wanted to prescribe AD's without any blood tests or further investigations.
Thanks for raising the awareness,
Sarah
I had already looked into the issue of thyroid deficiency but GPs are very reluctant to do the full test and the superficial one can be normal and not show the subtle problems.
I completely agree that it depends on your GP their knowledge and tests (if any) carried out. After persevering I requested a test and got the most basic TSH test which came back normal. It was only after reading other people's experiences and looking at websites that I paid for a private test and found out I was slightly low/borderline in the range. I can honestly say it has made a huge difference to me (I was in a bad way for a long time) which is why I wanted to share. All the best and I hope things are good for you.
hi. where do I get private thyroid test? I have underactive thyroid and depression. on med for both but really struggling with depression and anxiety and mood swings x
I am deep into adrenal pituitary testing and an mri scan , I am ill with worry ,, I have had an underactive thyroid for 25 years but didn't feel any better after taking thyroxin .. I am beyond my self with worry and I am finding it very hard to cope xx
oh that does sound hard for you, but I am not sure what else to say other than I hope it all sorts out for you and that you are enabled to begin to feel better. Suex
Really sorry your having to go through this. Have you checked out the HU Thyroid forum (maybe if you post your results on there someone can advise you)? Websites which may be able to help you are Thyroid UK and Stop the thyroid madness (they have some info on adrenals etc). Please try not to worry (far easier said than done) it will only strain your adrenals etc more.
Although not directly related, I myself was on thyroxine for many years and had many worrying symptoms (inc. mental health) and struggled to stand, do daily tasks etc I could go on.... I got no help and researched and switched from throxine to dessicatted thyroid and the lights switched back on and thankfully found myself again. I'm not out of the woods but I would never go back on thyroxine (mainly due to mental health symptoms). Thyroxine can and does work for many people inc. other family members but sometimes people may need something added eg T3 or desicated thyroid. The above websites etc will provide info if you want more info. Take care
Angel it's always hard going through tests, but it's better to get them done, the plus side is that if they find anything that needs fixing, it will help your Depression too, as if there's anything wrong with us, it's very hard to feel good. You will be in my thoughts.
