Enlarged Prostate Medication

Good afternoon.

I’ve been recently diagnosed with enlarged prostate. My general health is not good as I had a Triple Bypass and Mitral Valve Repair and also, last year was diagnosed with Heart Failure.

I’ve also got Severe Spinal Stenosis which has returned following a Failed Laminectomy Spine Operation. As a result of the Heart Failure I can’t take normal Painkillers like Ibuprofen etc so this is very difficult!

I was prescribed Tamsulosin which I took for a short time as I suffered with Rhinitis which I understand can be a side effect. The GP then prescribed Doxazosin with the same effect.

I’ve now been prescribed Finasteride but the Pharmacist said I would need to study the details given with these with regards to possible side effects before I decide to take them. I really rate the Pharmacist and I’m slightly concerned about the fact that she’s specifically mentioned this!

Does anyone have experience with this medication?

Thanks for any help given.

Kind regards

David

I've suffered horrendous, finasteride side effects for >7yrs from age 24 (not for bph)! Google post finasteride syndrome for full details re horrendous sides even AFTER stopping the drug, some which were hidden by the murdering manufacturer, Merck.

I suggest everyone reconsiders taking "pills for all ills" where only money-making manufacturers may benefit. My dad has had bph >12y and never taken a drug but uses natural treatment instead.

See a qualified, Nutritional Therapist that specialises in male hormones instead.

Ok. If/when you need details of NTs, feel free to send me a private message.

Surely a trip to the drs is necessary. I was on tamsulosin for years (and had the runny nose too) and its effects lessened (or my prostate continued to grow, which of course Tamsulosin doesn't affect anyway). So had the op.

I've been on finàsteride for over 10 years for bph. The only side effect has been that I don't produce semen, still get erections and orgasms but nothing is produced. At 74 not so bothered (don't want more kids!) but does detract slightly when no semen shoots out at orgasm! My psa has remained low so presume it's working. Told that even if I stopped taking it there's no guarantee I would start producing semen again.

If the prostate is restricting flow, and if natural health options don’t work, you might want to try the Urolift procedure if you can get on NHS (I did mine privately, no need for the drugs and with no side effects post procedure)

Can you tell us your experience with the Urolift procedure itself?

had BPH, restricting water flow, 1 bad bladder infection. Tried the drugs, gave me terrible headaches, had 2 dilatations that did not help. First urologist talked about TURP… I am 52 no way I am doing that. Find a urolift specialist in London, had it done early December, zero side effects, had bladder scanned end of January and no longer retaining urine.

Great experience and outcome

So, can you tell us about the procedure? what they did? How you felt? What happened during it? What your experiences were during procedure and recovery period? Etc.

There are good YouTube videos on this. Also it's best to see which of your local hospitals offer it. Near me Bradford Royal has many different options for prostate ops,but my nearest hosp only does turp and one other kind. So do your homework and if you get a GP referral (for anything kind of procedure) just tell them which hosp you want to go to.The other thing is,if your prostate is too big (mine :-( too long on tamsulosin hiding the thing growing.) then they won't offer some procedures if it's inappropriate.

That said I had the turp with no side effects. All good.

That's a great find, I would have never guessed skullcap for this effect. It's still only one rat study though but nevertheless a great find. Apparently it has stronger 5-alpha-reductase inhibitory activity than finasteride... It would be a miracle for androgen related hair-fall and prostate enlargement if this holds true for ND's new extract.

Hi Davewm. I M 90 later this year and I have BPH. I've been taking finasteride 5mg daily for a year now. I was told that it would take 4-5 months before the benefits were experienced and this was very accurate. By the end of 5 months the number of times I was awoken in the night was reduced to once or at most twice and this was a great relief after the usual 4-5x a night I had become used to. I was warned that there was a possibility of gynaecomastia (man boobs) but that I can put up with as long as they don't rival Dolly Parton's!Unfortunately there's been a bit of a downturn recently in that I am now being woken 4-5x a night again. I am investigating the possibility of a faulty batch of generic finasteride and I've got my GP to prescribe a month's supply of branded Proscar as a check. I'll see if it does the trick.

I would certainly recommend finasteride.
