Circumcision....

Hi guys,

After many years of struggling I finally had to take the plunge. It was for an urgent medical reason so my mind was made up for me.

The surgery was on May 3rd. The surgeon, anaesthetist and all other staff were brilliant.

Day 1 (surgery day)

I had the added bonus of a cystoscopy. I got home 6 hours after my General Anaesthetic. Felt like I was peeing razor blades for the first two before I left hospital.

Once the ring block wore off the pain hit me like a sledgehammer. Wow. This was about 17:00. I knew I was in for a long night. I took paracetamol and 40mg of Amitrylilne (prescribed for something else). I only woke up to pee razor blades at approx 02:00.

My friend who stayed with me is a Community Nurse and she looked after me well including buying me a pack of budgie smugglers to keep the old chap tight and secure.

Day 2

Very sore and swollen. By now the protective gauze had come off. I was truly able to appreciate what a mess it looked.

I took 8 paracetamol 6 ibuprofen and 60mg of amitriptyline but still had a lot of pain. Still peeing razor blades.

Day 3

Still sore and swollen with the added bonus of some lovely pastel bruising colours.

Not peeing razor blades which pleased me immensely. 8 paracetamol, 6 ibuprofen and 60mg Amitrylilne. Pain slightly easing but the tip was now highly sensitive to touching my budgie smugglers. Hurt like hell.

First soak in the bath. I was expecting it to be agony but it wasn't. It was almost strangely comforting.

Day 4

Swelling going down slightly and is the bruising. The pain slightly decreased as well. The sensitivity from the end rubbing is much worse. Walking like I should be in a Western.

Bathing was fine. I added salt but no soap.

6 paracetamol and 60mg Amitrylilne.

Day 5

Very similar to day 4. Had to walk to my Drs which is approx half a mile. Kept having to pull my underwear away from sensitive tip. Not a good look during the school run.

Swelling much better and no bruising today. The end is so sensitive. It's actually depressing now.

Bathing all good with salt.

6 paracetamol and 60mg Amitrylilne.

Day 6.

No bruising and swelling down further. The wound is slightly throbbing but not as painful. The tip is extremely sore/sensitive and now drying out. I took advice from here and got some non stick dressings and Vaseline. I lasted 2 hours with it but it actually hurt more as the dressing was slightly rigid.

Bathed with shower gel. No problems.

4 paracetamol and 60mg Amitrylilne.

Day 7

Similar to above but started to notice a foul smell. I assumed I had sweated over night and bathed again.

Pain around the wound underneath was very bad. It was very sore to lift up but when I did I saw a thick yellow/orange discharge.

Underwear back on and tried not to think about it.

8 paracetamol and 60mg Amitrylilne.

Day 8

My five year old son had a full day planned involving football, rugby, frisbee, play fighting etc. I tried, I really tried but the pain was severe and I felt genuinely unwell.

Could hardly bend down without severe pain.

Noticed lots of discharge in my underwear. Yellow/orange with a foul smell. Made up a jug of salt water and dipped the old chap it. The water had lots of traces of this discharge.

8 paracetamol and 60mg Amitrylilne.

Day 9

Literally identical to day 8.

Day 10

Called GP and went to see her. She took two swabs (one of which I admit brought me to tears). I'll get the results on Wednesday but she diagnosed an infection based on the discharge she could see and the smell. Prescribed antibiotics and codeine for the pain. She said if discharge still present after 3 days to go back and see her and she might send me to the Urologist for them to have a look.

Thoroughly depressed and feeling very sorry for myself.

That's unfortunate. Keeping rinsing in the salt water and let air dry. Do not use any soaps or deodorants down there.

Hopefully it will clear up but you may need antibiotics.

I'm on antibiotics as of yesterday.

How much did they help? I'm on them as of 5 days ago and they run out in 3 days. They're probably working alot more than I visually realise too.

Sorry about the late reply. They worked eventually but I required a second helping. Good luck.

Hi mate , i feel you 100% however you are growing desperate for no reason here really , the recovery times for this procedure is around 4-6 weeks in total sometimes even more , it depends from person to person .

The swelling , the sensitivity , the head situation all completley normal , your panic is actually making the recovery slow and hard to get trough so first thing is to calm down and understand that this will take a bit to be healed .

Do not take amytriptiline , that’s an antidepressant , and you are just in a panic , plus it takes a very long time for that to take effect literally 2 - 3 months and withdrawal symptoms are so crapy in a lot of people .

Even the drying out part is normal , your head is now uncovered , new skin is exposed to exterior factors , your penis is adjusting to all that and takes time .

The only good thing here is that you are on antibiotics as you have a post op infection .

Pair those with FUSIDIC ACID OR FUCIDIN , that’s antibiotic ointment and you apply it for 7 days on the operated area , that’s gonna speed very much the healing from the infection .

BIO OIL very important , this is what you have to apply 2 times a day on the sensitive areas .

Keep the penis upwards in tight briefs to limit movement for at least 2 weeks , if you have any swellings that will resolve it too .

Your case is just simply following proper aftercare steps and calming down and having the patience .

Post op swellings , infections , over sensitivities are completley normal .

Stop the amytriptiline asap .

Thanks for your awesome reply mate.

I'm on Amitrylilne for C-Spine disc and nerve compression. Nothing else works for the associated nerve pain. It's not my choice to be on it but it's imperative sadly.

Night time erections are so bloody sore. I assume this is normal too. There is one area that stings beyond belief when this happens. I'm taking 'man up pills' for that 😀.

I'll keep sucking it up.

Thanks for your advice buddy but I would say the NHS need to be forthcoming with information. I found this site to be a saviour.

The need to find out why I was urinating copious amounts of blood and due to phimosis the cystoscopy wasn't possible without circumcision.

I had the cystoscopy also due to kidney stones. I know what you mean about peeing razor blades. I referred to it as pissing glass - so we’re on the same wavelength. Following the procedure I too was peeing blood for 2-3 days. It’s an unpleasant procedure at the best of times, so can imagine it would be a lot worse with a circumcision on top of it. Your phimosis must have been extreme if they couldn’t get a cystoscope through?? I hope things improve for you soon.

Oddly it didn't make me pee blood (not visible anyway).

The razor blades didn't last long thank f**k.

My infection is still very much present so I'm going back to hospital tomorrow to the see the Urology Consultant. I can't see this being a pleasant appointment.

Good luck with it.
