Circumcision Recovery/Journey/Tips/Advice

Hi Guys I just thought I will write my journey from surgery to recovery (I’m just day 15 today but will be updating this every week), this might be helpful for some of us to be reassured, it was difficult to find specific details and sometimes you feel the questions you ask are stupid even when anonymity is guaranteed. there are no stupid questions please ask everything and anything and lets help each other. so here it goes——long post.

Day 0-7: The dressing fell off as soon I was moved to the recovery room and I was given some instructions re shower and activities by surgeon, 24 hrs and you can shower, light walking when you feel you can do, when the bleeding stopped and there is less pain. And the old phrase go to your GP if you have any problems.

Erections: At night I had a semi flaccid erection and bled from the sutures near frenulum. Had to go to pee every 3 hrs on the first few nights to get rid of erection. sometimes walking 20-30 steps helped in getting rid of erection. A lot of people ask on forum that their erections are not the same and less and they are still within weeks of surgery, this happens, you need to give it time to heal, pain is a very potent inhibitor and when you have pain during erection your body will deter the process that caused it, so I guess when the stitches are gone and you are at 5-6 weeks basically by end of healing you might see the increase in size—-might take longer, every body reacts in different ways. Give it time and see what happens.

mid week I was still getting erections but less painful and I was getting used to this routine of waking up and peeing and sleeping.

Peeing: I was peeing a fountain of streams for the first few days and it was difficult to aim this in the toilet bowl so started using the shower or bathtub (Used dettol or bleach after I peed to clean the shower, just a few drops and the the water does the job.) Use a soft tissue paper to dab the glans and pee hole to keep it dry and avoid getting pee in the wound.

Pain: I was using paraffin and instillagel as suggested by the surgeon and using paracetamol regularly—-these really helped.

The skin near the incision was a bit rolled up (I’m grower) the top right side was a bit swollen since the surgery but no pain or infection.

Bleeding: The bleed stopped on its own but I did use pressure on it, this worked, was disturbing though.

Sensitivity: The glans was really sensitive and using the instillagel and paraffin/vaseline helped.

Shower: I used to dissolve salt in measuring mug with lukewarm water and soaked the penis in there for 5 minutes and then used almost a litre of salt water- soft stream to remove and debris—-no force was just letting the water flow from mug.

Drying: It was the difficult part as touching or patting with anything will give me shivers, my partner suggested hair dryer and that is the best thing that happened to me, use very low heat and air flow to avoid burning, first use on skin on thigh to see how it feels and then use on glans.

Vaseline: I used ear buds to apply vaseline. sometimes the vaseline can be a bit hard too, You can dip the container in warm water to make it soft and this helps a lot in application.

Washing: For the first few days I was washing the glans twice a day but I felt this is not necessary—to each his own, I felt that by doing the routine in evening I was removing the good healing tissue and delaying the healing process, so I stuck to washing when showering.

Dressing: I stayed naked throughout, no clothes, no dressings, enjoyed the nudity! It feels great to walk on treadmill in just shoes!!

Posture: I avoided sitting straight or standing for long periods in the first week and this helped in getting the swelling down. I was getting loads of swelling as soon as I was standing or sitting and this was causing pressure and pain so stayed in bed most of the times and watched some of the long forgotten movies.

Day 8-15: The second week felt much better and and I was using treadmill and tried to wear underwear. Used vaseline and vaseline soaked gauze and then used an incontinence pad in underwear to make it more stable and I was able to go out for a trim. Removing the dressing is the worst part and feels like you are peeling the skin, so I guess I am avoiding that from now on. Will be trying underwear with a pad and vaseline and see how it feels. I thinks trousers are better than shorts as they hold everything in position as shorts are loose.

Driving: is easy if you have automatic, I drove stick and I wish I would have listened to my partner’s advice on using her car. The uphill walking was not so good but walking on plain is fine.

Swelling: There is still some skin swelling and rolling and the top swelling is still there but not that intense, a few sutures fell off towards the end of this week and I could see some knots dissolving but I am not removing any actively.

Erections are the same and now they are more intense and the sutures are digging in the skin and wound, I could see some fresh flesh on the suture line 3-4mm in size but no bleeding and no pain.

Following the advice from the first week re hygiene and everything.

Day 15- 21: Today is 21 days. Its not sensitivity but discomfort and I can wear underwear without any gauze or vaseline, feels uncomfortable. If the head is pressed I get the shivers, walking like donald duck, otherwise like head is rubbing against a rough surface.

Was not able to go back to work, administrative issue so took 2 more weeks off.

I still have stitches, none dissolved in the last week.

Night time erections are fine and not painful and I'm not waking at night due to these. Still sleeping on back. no bleeding.

Walking after wearing underwear pushes the glans in and some skin rolls over it, it is not painful but like some pressure and I am afraid why the skin is going up. I am hoping to ask above on the forum as well to get reassured. When erect I can see the healing line and there is no gap. the swelling at the top is still there I guess this was the first suture that broke and this is almost like a bump.

I have stopped using vaseline on head as it gets stuck to underwear, but using on sutures. rest is same. Peeing is getting better and some peeling on the glans.

Sorry for the long post, I will update this post every week. This is the first time I have written a post on a platform, Apologies in advance is this is offensive or useless.

Thank you so much mate for posting your journey as it will give reassurance to so many people going through the same procedure coz it does make you go through a phase of depression and pain. Thanks 👍

It's quite ok, but there is no scientific evidence for to use Epsom salt on open wound. I have asked the provider of that leaflet to check recent data about it. Epsom salt is mentioned some articles in 1920s. Is it current today?

I just wonder do we really need pro-circumcision movement to publish wound care instructions. Why your NHS can not provide it?

Yessir about to now, also I read that using salt water spraying it over the wound will help close & heal it faster.

updated it. Guys could you please help me with above. When flaccid I used to have glans and shaft (3-4 in) before surgery but now can only see glans and doughnut like skin below it. The penis is pressed when I wear underwear, it looks like it goes in and the rolled skin covers almost the lower half of it, although the suture line is fine and no gaps, still have almost all my sutures, there is some swelling on top which has improved slightly but still there. What can I do to keep the glans from getting pushed in? tried to use bandage to keep it upright but the swelling on the top makes it uncomfortable. when I lie down the skin loosens up and penis elongates and the swelling is gone, bit worried as wearing underwear/sitting upright/walking is causing this. HELP.
