We have been approached today by BBC Wales who are currently working on an episode of the TV show, X-Ray. The show is planning to look into the change from iridescent light bulbs to energy-saving light bulbs, which can have a negative effect on the health of some people with light sensitivity.

X-Ray would like to interview some lupus patients in Wales who are affected by the energy-saving bulbs so that they can get a good idea of the issue and the impact it has.

They are researching this week and hoping to start filming next week. If you live in Wales, are affected by energy-saving bulbs and you’re willing to be interviewed for a TV programme then please email paul@lupusuk.org.uk

Please include your name, address and telephone number.

Thank you.

Hi, I am somewhat pleased to see this post! I live in Spain but work in Gibraltar. I had a really bad flare from January, (having started a new job December) which was not responding to any treatment, 800mg plaquenil + steroids+ DHEA all at the same time. I eventually went on dapsone at the higher dose at beginning July which after 3 weeks began to calm it, however I was extremely unwell whilst on that dose! towards the end of the 3 weeks I noticed it was calmer when I went into work in the morning but by lunch time it was 100% worse... I analysed what was causing this and suspected it was the lights... I would add that I have never reacted to artificial lighting in the 20 years since I was diagnosed... My employer offered to move or change the lights but I declined at that point. However 4 weeks on and I am now once again having yet another flare and 3 days into dapsone again! Whilst I live in a sunny climate I am extremely careful with the sun I' ve now taken to using sun block in work as I'm now certain it is the energy saving bulbs that are to blame! My employer is now sourcing LED bulbs as apparently these give of less UVA /UVB rays. Unfortunately, the form I have is the more aggressive form so it is not a pretty sight...

I would just like to say thank you for this post as I thought I was beginning to imagine it!
