I have been refused DLA 6 times and it is now getting to be very frustrating. Am I more likely to get DLA if I am receiving ESA? (I have been accepted with ESA and am in the process of applying).

I am sorry to hear that you are struggling to get DLA. I don't think that it will make much difference that you have been accepted for ESA because DLA is a benefit that can be paid to people that are working or sick and disabled. I don't know enough about your circumstances with regard to your needs and neither do I know how much you understand about DLA and what it is paid for but I do know that a lot of people have thought that it is paid just because you are sick but unfortunately it is not. It is on a need basis and if you are not qualifying under their criteria after applying 6 times personally I do wonder whether that is because you have not got the need as they apply it or is it that you are answering the questions in the wrong way. Do you get help in filling in the forms from anybody that understands them (like CAB or another help service) or do you do it off your own back. DO you also remember to fill out all the questions as if it is your worst day ever? You must not tell porkies but you shouldn't sell yourself down the river either. Do you have any form of help from another person to do anything like personal care or meals? Housework is not taken into account. Can you walk with or without a stick over the distances they ask on the form without any pain or any pain that prevents you from walking any further? Do you need somebody to be with you when you are outside for any reason to keep you safe? These are some of the things that help them to decide whether or not you are entitled to the extra benefit to help you to manage day to day. I hope that this will help you to maybe apply again and get the award this time. Sometimes we just don't think of all the things that we do need help with and even things like using the toilet can be a problem but one that we would not want to tell somebody but it is extremely important to put it on forms like this and also include as much supporting evidence as you can from doctors and specialists that have treated you and I always include my repeat prescription so that they can see categorically what meds I do take regularly. All the very best to you and I do hope with all my heart that this has not come across at all patronisingly as it is definitely not meant in that way. Sue xx
no my dear it's not because you get ESA,sometimes it's better to have a secondary condition such as arthritis or something. If you keep appealing to the DLA try doing a new claim ,i did and it worked, i'm not saying it's fullproof but it's worth a chance,i lost my backpay through doing that ,at least i get it now.wish you well jacksiex
Hi - I was accepted for DLA without a medical and the person who agreed it had looked at my medical evidence and ESA paperwork - it was very unexpected - so good wishes to you on your new application.

Thanks to everyone for their answers - they have helped me understand how to apply more thoroughly. xx
Hi I`ve asked for my claim for DLA to be looked at again as I have got worse, I do get lower rate care but need something for my mobility as I cant walk far at all only from door to car, I have jus received a letter saying they are requesting a letter from my GP for further information! How much bloody information to these guys need, as I have sent one letter from my GP already. So maybe its better than to just get a letter saying no you havent got anything! xx
I recently spoke to the DLA department and they said the two benefits wouldn't necessarily be connected, as one is looking at your ability to work and the other is looking at your personal and mobility needs. I first got DLA when i was working full time. the two departments may speak to each other over a claim to check for inconsistencies etc but one isn't dependant in the other. hope that helps xx
This is not the case, i was already getting DLA high mob and middle care when i appealed an Atos decision to get ESA, a few weeks later, i lost my mob DLA and was put on low care
the CAB worker believes my appeal for ESA prompted the DLA to review my claim. I am now having to appeal this decision. I am soooo sick and tired of having to fight for what i believe i am entitled to. I have worked all my life , and now because i have lost my job due to ill health, i find myself in a fight to just get enough to exist.
