Smear test from hell!!!

Just had an awful experience having a smear test, so much pain, nurse had to get a doctor to do it. Anyone else had the same? Dreading my first mammogram too, have heard that is more painful for us too. Anyone due for a smear, I would advise you to take painkillers before you go to take the edge off, just wish I had!

i sympathise with you, i find smears painful, not as bad as you have experienced but bad enough, they say relax !!!!! not that easy to be honest, i had a mammogram years ago as i found a lump in my breast and to b honest with you i didnt find it painful at all uncomfortable yes, maybe as i was in a private clinic it made a difference but i shouldnt think so, women have said it is painful but my experience was a positive one, hope this helps

Luckily I've not need a smear test for many years now, but always did find them painful, especially the laying down bit oddly!

I have had 2 breast scans in recent months, neither have been painful, just uncomfortable as bigmomma says. Mine have been with the NHS, one in a mobile unit. I did tell the ladies there that I was a fibromite but it was all ok.

I also received the reassurance that a lump found is just a cyst, worth all the pain I might have had to endure.

Thanks, that's great, another pain free one! So pleased that your lump was just a cyst. X

Hi, i have a mamagram every year, i must admit the old machines were not painfull at all for me and the new digital kind only give seconds of mildest discomfort against a years worth of peace of mind hun. I only think i get the discomfort because my breast are tender to begin with. Honestly the staff are brilliant and the its all over in minutes and peace of mind is the best kind of medicine : D

Hugs poppy xx

Wish I had joined and read this before today. Had to have a smear today and did not connect the fact that there might be pain. Having to get the bus home made the experience even worse. The pain was such a shock. Mammogram was done last year and that was fine. Mild discomfort but not pain.

Oh no, poor you I feel your pain, i'm still sore today, applied sudocrem on and it has helped a bit. Luckily I live close to the clinic, a bus journey must have been awful for you, all those bumps in the road, ouch! Hope you feel better sson. X

I always ask the nurse to use the smallest speculum, makes it more 'bearable' i always get the, 'oh you've given birth, it should be a doddle' from her but after wiping the smug look off her face by showing her my section scar, i explain about my fm and the sensitivity i have and she always obliges x

Thanks, the doctor ended up using a smaller one in the end, i've not had children and have a very high cervix, so i'll definitely remember to make sure of that next time, so thanks for the tip!! X

I get painful smears as well....and a coil change. For me I find sitting up watching what the nurse/doctor is doing to set up then lie back and take deep breaths.

Mind you it also helps if you have a good doctor/nurse.

For sure, it was much better once the doctor took over. I think I wiil request a doctor every time from now on!
