So I had my appointment this morning with the Rheumatology specialist....or actually one of her doctors. He said I definately had fibro (no suprise as was diagnosed ages ago!) He has prescribed me amiltryptaline (spelling bad!) and pregabalin. He said...and get this...."All you need to do is sleep more and break the cycle of no sleep then pain" Oh if life were so easy. He went on to say that this was a curable thing with time once I had got my head in the right place and was sleeping better....he reckoned about six weeks would do it!!
So, pretty uselesss appointment and waste of time...square one again! The stupid thing is...I was actually there to see him about the already diagnosed severe osteoarthritis in my knees and what to do to manage the pain in my knees...he didn't even look at them...just said it was fibro...despite just having had an arthroscopy to determine the bleedin' arthritis!!! which showed up my crappy bones!!
I am thinking of several names for this doctor...but am being restrained and holding my tongue. Its a good thing we have support on this site...cos we rarely get it outside of those who have it! I am seeing him again in September so I can assure him he has 'cured' me...eejit!!

Go back to your own GP and ask to be refered to the Pain Management Unit the silly man should have refered you at your appointment to the pain clinic. They are marvelous, hugs poppy xx
Hi fibrodude That was a bad experience to say the least, i am fortunate to have most of my appointments leaving a positive note. Hope the amitryptaline & pregabalin help, i have just been put on pregabalin so it looks like we could be cured soon..lol !
I have been taking amitryptaline for a while & it helps me, but on 25mg and not any stronger as i hade some side effects on a higher dose, is there a way to get a second opinion? hope you feel better soon on new meds, take care soft hugs...mary x.
Thanks Mary...keep us up to date on your 'cure' progress hehe. I used to take amitryptaline before to help with sleep...but found I couldn't wake up for work in the morning...just couldn't open my eyes! I will try again however and see if I can get a larger alarm clock! Its good that you seem to have a good outcome of your appointments....that makes me smile!
we should all see this rhumy if he can make us all better in 6 weeks. is he the best rhumy in the world . lol
if hes found a cure for fibro can we all see him, what a **** he is, complain about him hes bloody well dangerous
He certainly was an eejit (l love that word, my nan, use to use it all the time, bless her.) met a few of them along my fibro journey.
Sorry you did not have a positive experience, I agree go back your GP, sound like you have a good GP and there support is vital.
I take amitiptyline at night, currently 75mg (so a high dose, which I would like to reduce at some point), I take at 6pm each night as like you the mornings, were proving to be a problem. But touch wood, the mornings are not too bad at the minitue.
Take care, have a good weekend.

hehe I would give you all his name...but on this site we are not allowed to name and shame!!! Sorry all! However if I get 'cured' you will all be the first to know!! teehhee!!
Sorry but I laughed out loud at this one....silly me all i need to do is add amitriptline (really bad spelling) to my cocktail of drugs and sleep more...yippee then I'll be pain free....wish someone would have told me that 12 years ago....sorted!!!
sorry guts I'm being flippant but my god, where do these doctors get off!!
Flippancy is fine! Actually quite apt for my blog and suits the situation well. LOL. I think laughing is the way to go on this one...as we go back to the drawing table. I was hoping the doc would go more down the route of, for example, stem cell research, lack of substance P in fibro sufferers, lack of vit D, pain receptor faults etc...you know...more of the research stuff that might actually take us forward...then maybe we would have a cure!!!
I went to see my GP this morning to hear the rheumatologists report (saw him three weeks ago). It was confirmed that I have fibromyalgia, so everything is all new to me. The main reason I went to see the rheumatologist was because of the osteoarthritis in my big toe, both knees and hip. My knees are very musical and creek wonderfully – so you can’t miss the problem.
Have been so upset all day, my GP suggested Amitriptyline (already tried it twice) and once that was dismissed, I was told all I needed to do was improve my sleeping pattern and all would be okay. I apparently don’t need any painkiller. Can’t see how sleeping more, better or deeper will make my knees not hurt. And how do I sleep until my toe, knees, hips and muscles stop hurting.
When I read your post it really helped me. I’m not alone, it’s not just happening to me and it’s confirmed my views that a miracle would happen if I could just manage to sleep. Thanks for your post xxx
Agggh exscuse me being synical but was you rehumatologist....... God Incarnate??????? Cure in 6 weeks.................... blahhhhhhh....................
Thats funny Susie...I think he thought he was! Either that or Santa!
Its so bad that this is a common experience with most of us through our 'specialists' Just because they don't fully understand it they make it up, or think we do! xxxx
Oh you lot do make me laugh, if I didn't laugh I would certainly be crying!!.
What a disappointment for you Fibrodude having to see someone who is probably a doctor in training and as green as he is cabbage looking and still wet behind the ears!!.
I would certainly go back and talk this over with your GP, they may want to write back to the consultant and challenge what this young doctor is saying and I would certainly ask to see the consultant next time you visit he hospital as is your right.
Having worked in Medical Personnel before I left work I must be honest it scares me to death to see any junior doctor these days and I do try and avoid hospitals like the plague. I am fortunate in having a brill GP though and am happy to be treated by her unless it is something she cannot deal with. I always ask in advance what doctor I am seeing when I get to clinic and if I am not happy always request someone else.
Anyway, if you do get cured by more sleep please let us know so that we can try it. Take care, love Angela xx
Hey come on fibrodude - give the doc a chance.... he did say 6 weeks not overnight (tongue in cheek)
I sincerely think that some docs like a stock ending to their time with patients, and this sounds like one.
I wish fibro was just about sleeping...
Lindz xx
Hi fibrodude ... sorry to hear about the specialist now i knoe think possitive can help but well they do have some wonderful ideas ... my specialist told me to loose waight .. i told him i found this hard he told me to live on boilt rice and water for a month ... I find it funny now it would not have been so bad but he was not slim himself gentle dyslexic hugs
Reminds me of a GP appt two years ago. A new GP listened patiently and sympathetically while I described how my arms felt as though they were being ripped out of their sockets then, when my allocated time was up, he steered me out of the room - with a firm grip on my upper arm!!
Do you know, the silliest thing about all this is...I am probably one of the few on here who doesn't have a problem with sleeping...just pain!!! I sleep fine, in fact I could sleep all week!! I have constant pain in most muscles and joints but I sleep like a baby! (no, not dribbling!) So am struggling to see how my very unhelpful doc is going to cure me!! I am extremely sorry for those of you, my lovely fibro friends, who are unable to get sleep. My heart goes out to you. xxxx
well well miracle cure hey, what a dip stick agree with everybody's comments and just had a right laugh at some of the comments you have received LOL Drs like that should really end up with fibro then they wouldn't be so flippant would they !!!!!!!!!!!!!! take care sue xx
Wen I first read your post I was quite shocked but wen I read down at your response from other people ended up makeing me laugh so fare play to the good people on this site have turned a bad thing into a good thing next time you go take this site to him and these people feed back maybe he won't be so silly to the next person he see why do some docs not understand with what we go thru and we come out feeling worse than wen we went in there hope the Meds do help you and you can start to live a bit more normal life at least the fibro not taken your hummer that is the best medicine have a good smile and a laugh we all need to stick together and maybe 1 day we will get some understanding of this horrible thing we have to live with love your name you come up with keep up the postivey it helps us all and get another doc that no what he talking about
What a complete muppet of a professional! Sorry you had that. Maybe put in a complaint with the head rheumatologist as that is wrong of them to say that to you! I personally wouldn’t go back to him I would request another doctor.
