Hi all, just wanted to ask if anyone has had similar experience of taking NSAIDs?In 2019 I had endoscopy as I was experiencing stomach pain and afterwards I was told to avoid NSAIDs.

I take pregablin 300mg x 2 daily and cocodamol if I have to.

I recently asked gp for naproxen to try it for month for sciatica, it helped so much, then she said I had to avoid it due to the advice from 2019.

Any other suggestions please?

Thank you

Hi, were you taking something to protect your stomach while taking NSAIDs like Omeprazole or Esomeprazole?

I've use Arcoxia (Etoricoxib) for several years now and it's probably the best pain relief I've ever had.

HiyaThank you for replying, I think I had been taking over the counter ibuprofen at that time, as i hadn't got much help from gp, so no omeprazole.

I was confused at the time to be told 'no NSAIDs', and probably always going to have problems for foreseeable future with them.

I will look into the meds you've mentioned

Hi I've taken naproxen for a number of years. However I insisted the go gave me stomach protectors as well as coated naproxen. I only take as and when I can't cope with the pain and they work wonderfully I usually take for three days at a time and then stay off them until the pain gets worse. I've had no stomach problems.Nut before I asked for stomach protectors I did have stomach problems. Hope this is some help.

Hi Seascapes31 - I took Naproxen for a couple of years for joint pain and found it very effective but was told to stop all NSAID’s when I was diagnosed with a neuro vascular conditions (due to the effect on blood vessels). A recent endoscopy showed some damage on my oesophagus - not significant but enough to cause symptoms - I was told it could well be down to historic use of naproxen. I didn’t always take omeprazole alongside it, like I was told to, so yeah I guess it makes sense that you’ve been warned off. Could you perhaps try a patch or topical gel to put directly on your skin? It has a temporary effect but after a warm bath and with a hot water bottle it can help with getting to sleep. I feel for you as although I’ve not experienced it, I’ve seen my husband crippled with sciatica.

Yes I've used gel and it's OK but of course only helps the bit you've applied it to, I'm planning on doing an econsult to gp to ask for help, and I really miss the days when you could actually see your gp, things can easily get misconstrued in a written econsult .

Agree! It’s almost impossible to see a GP face to face and quickly. Hope you get it sorted as constant pain takes it’s toll.

You're so right, over the weekend I have been in so much pain I felt if this is how I'm meant to live, it's not worth it, I haven't been out or seen anyone and of course that makes everything ten times worse, thank you for replying

hiya, i also cannot take NSAIDs but there is one in the group which is categorised a little differently that I am allowed to take called Celecoxib. I found this to be much more gentle on my stomach and great for pain relief. Might be worth asking the GP about it.

Thank you

I've just done econsult....I Timed it...took me 15 minutes to complete online!

I will ask re that med, thank you

I'm given naproxen to take with triptans for my migraines. My mother mentioned her friend getting stomach damage from taking naproxen so I talked to my GP, they said anyone over the age of 42, no idea why 42, should be taking Omeprazole or presumably another Protein Pump Inhibitor when taking naproxen, or other nsaids, like ibuprofen for example.

It's a difficult one that's for sure, hope it gets sorted

HiI take Naproxen and have done for a few years. It was the only medication that really helped. I have always taken Omeprazole with it. It's a shame your GP didn't advise and give you this or similar medication with it. I so hope you can get it sorted. Big hugs. 🤗🤗

Thank you

Yes I agree, she sent me a message rather than speaking with me, that may have been due to me ticking the wrong box or something in the online form! This is one of my bugbears about consulting your gp online.....anyway thank you for replying, I'm awaiting a reply from the practice now

Best wishes

Hi I suffer from sciatica. I used Ralvo 700mg. I got the sciatic pain lower back hip and side of knee. You can put the patches in all these areas it starts from the back buttock area and the pain shoots down. Best to place where is starts your lower back buttock area. Hope this helps.

Hi. I also have acid reflux and a hernia. Ibuprofen has always been a tablet bad for the stomach as is other nsaids. Side effects of drugs. I’m on Lansazporole 30mg. Have been for years. The hidden side effects are Alzheimer’s I only take them now every second or third day if I can. Sometimes is it best to do with out. 😩

I was on Naproxen but was always told that I had to take Omprazole which is to protect your stomache as Naproxen on its own harms your stomache and liver I was told you can only take for 2 weeks then rest.Omprazole is taken in the morning on a empty stomache and before dinner.

Hope this helps.

I suffer with fibro and have been on naproxen for pain relief since 2018 have not had a gastro tablet prescribed along side it for years in may had stomach cramps and in June ended up in a&e as was passing black tarry stools. They said bleed to stomach took me off naproxen and now waiting to see gastro team in December.only thing is what do you take as replacement pain medication???

Seascapes31 profile image
Seascapes31 in reply toCAS759A

That's the GP's responsibility to give you adequate stomach protection, then you would have been saved from ending up A and E, I hope they get you sorted.

I agree what do you take for pain relief ?

I find cocodamol doesn't help much.

I'm hoping to hear back from gp so I can at least discuss options.

Best regards

Hi, I am on naproxen, have been for over 2 yrs now and I also take omeprazole alongside it to help line the stomach as the naproxen can cause upset tummy and other things. I've had no issues taking both. Maybe ask your gp if taking naproxen long term for omeprazole also?

Seascapes31 profile image

Yes I'm hoping to get chance to discuss it.....thank you

I have been taking naproxen on and of for about 10 years my friend said I should have been taking stomach liners so I asked my dr he said no you don’t have to it’s only when you are over 50 I was 49 at the time 🙄 I also ended up in a@e with chest pains and they were surprised I wasn’t on stomach liners and put me on them straight away I did explain that I had asked the dr and was told I want old enough and didn’t need to take them their response said it all about drs I am now on permanent omeprazole every day regardless of if I take naproxen I now only take naproxen randomly as it does ease my joints and helps but I choose not to take it every day because of the long term damage it does to your organs

Hiya

I totally understand what you're saying about different advice and

I'm thinking same about some GPs now unfortunately after my recent experience.

However yesterday I had a long phone chat with the chronic pain pharmacist who works at the surgery. I didn't know there was any such service attached to my surgery as I'd have liked to have spoken to her about my pain ages ago!

She then

spoke to my gp about best pain relief for me.

However, GP then decides 'let's put her on codeine to be used in a flare up of fibromyalgia'......OK doctor thats great, but what about the pain that I have to deal with every day??! By the way.....I already am on repeat prescription for cocodamol 30mg/500mg repeat prescription, which GP appears to have overlooked, so now I feel totally lost.

CheetieCat profile image
CheetieCat in reply toSeascapes31

Honestly!😞 Wouldn't you just love to gift your pain for a day or two to GP's like this? It certainly wouldn't be just Co-Codomol. Amitriptyline would be good for sciatica, any decent GP would know that and also know codeine won't touch the pain. If you can't get to speak to a different GP then I would suggest contacting out of hours or similar. You shouldn't have this pain when it can be eased.

Seascapes31 profile image
Seascapes31 in reply toCheetieCat

Thanks for replying!I've seen GP has now flagged up on my record 'sensitivity to NSAIDS'

So any gp in the surgery is not going to give me any!

I'm assuming it's thought to be in my best interests but yes what else is going to help me?

I collected my codeine prescription (to only be used in a flare up) and checked it out, yes it's exactly the same as the codeine in cocodamol, which I've been able to re order many times.....you couldn't make it up!

So onwards and upwards and I am going to continue to work towards some kind of resolution for me.

Thank you for getting in touch it's much appreciated

Hi, just an update on NSAIDs use. Recent bloods show I have chronic kidney disease so I'm assuming while I was so concerned with protecting my stomach totally forgot about the kidneys!😳 So if you do manage to get some try for short term use only & get your bloods checked regularly. Take care
