Burning tongue
Hi nobody can diagnose online. There are a number of possible causes from the menopause to simple infections or some medications. The best advice I can give is to see your GP. I have had these symptoms but they were related to steroid use.
Hi Deezy24, I’m sorry to hear about this and can only imagine how painful it must be. Have you managed to see a gp? The only way I can understand how you must be suffering is as I have damaged nerve endings in my left shoulder blade area that burns intensely and is so painful I don’t know where to put myself and nothing eases it whatsoever. I haven’t heard of anyone who has what you have described so I’m really sorry I can’t help, all I can do is empathise and hope you can find some relief and answers. Wishing you all the very best 💖xx
Hi Deezy24The tongue is linked by nerves to many places in the body and can give indication of problems elsewhere. Even mild and dietary issues.
As we are all so different you could seek medical advice. In the UK ring 111.
My tongue and roof of mouth burn if I eat high acid foods like pineapple or ear highly coloured sweets.
My tongue swells and goes lumpy on the side when my gut is bad.
Hope you feel better soon

yes and I must remind myself to visit gp again next week couple of weeks ago he gave me medication and mouth wash. All used up now and my tongue is still very red along centre and where it’s red n tip feel like I’ve burnt it all the time.I find any food is irritating it.Is that what it’s like for you
Hi sorry I missed your reply. Yes it’s exactly like that and it does get you down at times. Sometimes I can’t even eat toast as it’s too painful. I am going to make another appointment tomorrow as I want to be able to eat properly when I go on my hols. I hope you get yours sorted.
Hi yes I suffer with burning tongue seen consultants without any conclusions. It seems to happen when I’m having a flare with my Lupus.
there is a condition called Burning Mouth Syndrome which I’ve had in the past and a low dose of Amitriptyline helped .. gone now
Also try SLS free toothpaste .(eg Aloe Dent from..Amazon. ) some people like myself react to that particular chemical in toothpaste which causes sore mouth/ gums..
Hi. If you are getting blood tests, ask your GP to look for iron deficiency as this can cause a sore tongue. I’m currently having this issue with sore tongue and have discovered I’m anaemic again. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon and can get relief.
Oh dear! Don’t you just love it when people give you the worst case scenario! It can get really sore so that it’s really uncomfortable to eat. For some bizarre reason it seems particularly bad with bananas, I’ve no idea why. I hadn’t associated it with my anaemia but I looked up symptoms and sore tongue was one of them. I was thinking I had a sudden banana allergy or something strange. It can feel like it’s burnt. I hope you can put your neighbour’s ‘helpful’ suggestion out of your head.
I use to get that a lot. Could I suggest you look up symptoms for oral thrush. ( not the same as vaginal thrush). If it’s sounds like your symptoms, your pharmacy or nurse practitioner can give you something for that.
I have what's called "geographic tongue", a syndrome for which there is no cure, no known cause and no remedy. I'm in horrible pain with chili peppers, pineapple, tomato, and the list goes on. I have a big split down the middle of my tongue.
Hi Deezy24
Back in 2021 I was referred to an ENT specialist with a burning & really painful tongue which i had already been suffering with for a very long time. After looking down my throat & at my tongue, I was told I could have a suspected tumour on the back of my tongue...which as anyone can imagine scared the life out of me. Luckily I didnt have to wait too long...but long enough, for an appointment.
I was put to sleep & they took 2 biopsies from my tongue.
I am so pleased to say they weren't cancerous.
So I am just letting you know of my experience with ' burning tongue' & indeed you are not alone in suffering from this.
I was never given a reason or what could be the cause but was so relieved!
Not trying to scare you but just telling you of my experience & that it is highly unlikely, as this is very rare but they were ruling out the worst case scenario.
Hope this helps you xx
