I work in a hospital for a few hours which is great for my fatigue and pain levels. Here’s the kicker I need help I get terrible hot flushes where I can be standing doing nothing but sweat is pouring of me and this is having a negative effect on my confidence and anxiety.also the night sweats where I have to change my bedding a lot. With this hot weather in Scotland I feel it’s made everything worse.
Any tips would be appreciated thanks

hello. I feel for you, I have hot flushes and live in Scotland too. One moment you are fine and the next it’s like you have put your head into an oven. Are you on HRT?
So far they have checked my bloods and it’s not menopause but I think it’s the result of all the medication I am on. It doesn’t help me and I don’t go anywhere without my hand fan but still sweat loads
hello I had 2 lots of blood tests which didn’t show I was menopausal but my GP said I was, I don’t think the tests are very accurate as hormones are always up and down. I have gone through a few fans and also used bits of hard card when I don’t have access to a fan 🤪
I feel like I will need to save up to get properly checked privately at this point as I keep getting bounced to different doctors and when I get one that actually listens to me the receptionist never give me an appointment with them again even when I request it huh
Hello ladies, I was also one who suffered from hot flushes and still do. They put me on HRT. Big mistake.. I took it and it blocked out maybe 70% of the hot flushes.. But eventually gave me breast cancer. So I immediately got off of them. So now because it was not worth it going through surgery and 2 years of chemo and radiation I just must accept it and live with it.. It is disappointing to me though how lightly the medical world take menopause...
Hello , horrid and uncomfortable especially when you’re at work☹️, I would never be without my fan at nite always bottle of water on bedside cabinet @ take a cup of ice cubes in water as well , already stocked up on ice lollies , I use a lavender roll on my face as gives me a nice cooling effect , and a couple of head band type cooling gels I keep in fridge too alternate I got on Amazon I think. Had early change so thinking my hots sometimes could be my medication. xx
will try the ice since I’ve been told to limit my fluid intake as it’s causing me to lose both good and bad nutrients etc. just feels like you can’t win and feel disgusting or feel judged when people see me like that.
Neck fans are quite good, I have several 🥵 I'm also in Scotland and the heat totally wipes me out! One I have is a bit more discreet, kinda looks like a pair of headphones rather than the more obvious two fans blowing right in your face. Hospitals are a nightmare for heat anyway but right now, well, I really feel for you!
Soya isoflavones really worked for me but made my already dry mouth even worse. I really didn't think was possible but couldn't continue with them it was so bad and they are a bit expensive but you may have more luck, got mine from H & B
Hi I went through the menopause 11 years ago but the flushes just never went away so a couple of months ago I went to my Dics and they prescribed HRT. The first lot, patches, made me bleed but now I'm on a gel/tablet combo and my flushes have gone. I had a blood test and everything was normal but as previous member said hormone levels do fluctuate. I hate I need them after all this time but they are helping so I'm sticking with it. I'm 63. I hope you get this solved bless you x
Have you checked out Dr Louise newsoms podcast she is great for advice and tips I found her in Spotify. I am in a Facebook group the Irish menopause. I know you are in Scotland but a lot of tips there and they could maybe recommend a group closer to home u found them very helpful. Are you on hrt?
Hiya, sorry that you’re suffering with the hot flushes, they’re horrendous aren’t they?! I’m menopausal & I refer to them as my broken thermostat🤣 the one thing I found that has helped sort it out is sage tablets so thought I’d pass that on. Hope that helps🤞
It took years for me to stop having hot flushes after I’d been through the menopause: they finally seem to have gone away - seven years after I became clinically post menopausal. I have a friend who doesn’t have Fibro who had the same problem for over ten years. It can vary a lot depending on the individual concerned.
20 years plus for me 🥵🥵😥😪😓No dr has ever done anything to help me. Cannot have hrt as have protein’c’ blood disease. 62 still having to work! Although have dropped 1day per week due to fibromyalgia and many other conditions. It gets me down, it’s embarrassing and makes you feel awful all the time. Fans go everywhere with me. Have got to the point where I’m considering if having a hysterectomy would help 🤷♀️my empathy to you all xx
I had a hysterectomy, didn't help at all with the hot flushes, no idea why as I thought it would, then again we fibro folk are a weird bunch - our bodies never behave the way we think they should😂
hi Dinkie, 😁thank you for answering🫶it is helpful to hear from others re anything one way or another as it gives you options then to weigh things up being more informed, so thank you, I really appreciate your reply. It would be a lot to go through if it didn’t make any difference🤔I just don’t know what the answer is, like many of us🤷♀️is it another thing that we just have to ‘put up with’ which isn’t easy by any means. It’s a daily occurrence, occurring all the time and it’s like anything else until you have experienced it, people just don’t understand. I’ve literally gone and still go through at work, women🤦♀️not at all supportive and down right dismissive to me actually BUT oh, when they are now experiencing it! Well, it’s a different story😡of course there is never any ‘Oh, now I understand’ which to be honest would be nice to validate how I’ve been feeling for years. Sorry for the moan but I actually do feel justified in mentioning that because not being listened to especially for a lengthy period is quite disabling in itself. I could go on but I will stop there and enjoy resting on a Wednesday that I have now had to drop working each fortnight along with every other Monday, so 1 day per week as like many of us it has become too much for me. Something of a disgrace when the Government have in their ‘wisdom’🤔have never taken into account when extending the age we can receive our pensions after paying in for years 😡that not all jobs, I’m a carer for example, or for people with chronic conditions and other situations through no fault of their own just cannot cope with work any longer. But that’s a whole other story. On a lighter note wishing you all a restful/ peaceful rest of today ❤️💕💙x
that’s why I'm so glad to have found this site and I can speak to other people that do understand what it’s like to be so limited in what you can and cannot do as this changes each day. Keeping a happy face when you just want to drop isn’t fun and confidence is really low and anxiety is super high. Sending everyone a big warm hug to everyone
Almost 30 yrs on from a hysterectomy, I still have hot flushes and stream with sweat from my head, face, arms (not armpits) and back several times a day.
I have a separate diagnosis - Hyperhidrosis, not menopause.
Maybe people with Fibro are prone to Hyperhydrosis?
Hi Bubbles. I too am suffering with hot flushes all the time. I'm your age and have also have been checked for early menopause but like you it isn't that. I'm a bit lower down than you, living in Wales rather than Scotland, but it's been very warm here too and let me tell you, I have been SWEATING 💦. I'm constantly dabbing at my face with tissues so I don't look like I've just taken a shower and don't even get my started on it running down my back like a water fall 💃.
I too believe it's down to the medication I am on. Namely Amitriptyline and especially Atenolol. I have absolutely no advice to give, as I have found nothing to combat it, I just wanted you to know you're not alone in the feelings it has brought with it. There are other embarrassed anxious sweat ridden thirty-something's out there feeling very much the same. I truly hope you find a system that helps you, but if you ever just need a chat or a moan I'm always here.
HelloI started having hot flushes in my early forties, but didn't go through menopause, until I was 52. I'm still suffering at 60, prompted by Nortriptyline (minimal dose) and stress. Also my aunt still had them occasionally in her 70's (arrrgggh). Previously on here, I think, people have said difficulty with body temperature control is a symptom of Fibromyalgia. Oh Joy! Another one!
I second Sage tablets. Soya, giving up caffeine (sorry), no added sugar if possible, and general good diet. Layered thin clothing in cotton. Ditto bed covers. Glass of water by bed. Also just telling people (ok, mostly women), when you have one in a casual "oh , I'm having a hot flush" way, to dispel any embarrassment. I found cool water better than iced, as too much of a shock. I think drinking water or doing something else is a distraction and a way of getting through the peak of feeling burning hot. I used to get up and go to the loo at night, because by the time I got back to bed it would be going off. Being kind to yourself is always helpful, of course.
Do you have an NHS Menopause clinic in your area? I don’t have one where I live but you can ask to be referred if there’s one near you. I started with hot flushes in my late 30s but only had full menopause at 50 so I know what you’re going through. Find a sympathetic GP. They can put you on the lowest dose HRT patch to see if it helps. Go forearmed with info. Find out as much as you can through the internet and don’t be afraid to disagree with your GP. HRT fixed my hot flushes but it took a while to get the right dose. I had to persist to get what I needed. Also are you aware that anti-depressants can also cause heat intolerance? It might be worth trying a different drug if your on ADs. Sertraline gave me bad sweats!
definately taking notes of things everyone has mentioned. This post has given me more information than any doctor as they are just as clueless, at least I can feel a bit more pro active going forward x
hi sorry to hear what your going through, I take a capsule twice a day, by Health & Her, Perimenopause-multi nutrient support.
I tried it due to the many good reviews on hot flushes and I can honestly say after a week or so I haven’t had them since but I also started on sertraline at the same time so not really sure if it’s one or the other, but it might be worth a try, I purchase mine off Amazon, hope you manage to find a solution soon
HRT was not for me - in fact it led to a diagnosis of EDS and fibro via a private consultant appointment - he recognised the symptoms and referred me on. It cost £200 twice - but a lifesaver in terms of getting treatment that’s helped me move.
I take menofriend for perimenopause symptoms - good relief from brain fog and the internal thermostat issues that you describe? Maybe worth a try x
Hi, yes, I get the hot flushes, , combination of menopause and fib I think, I have to sit with a fan at work, even in winter. But I suppose it's harder for you as your job is active. Maybe worth seeing your doctor about this, I'm sure they will run blood tests, good luck xxx
