Face pain.

Not sure what's going on with my face this week but I'm about to storm the dentist and demand they remove all my teeth😁 I'm mostly sipping soup and duncking biscuits, which is ok but oh the pain! I'm taking paracetamol an ibuprofen and I've got some gel to put on my gums to numb the pain. The dentist had xrayed my teeth and they are fine, the doctor has checked my mouth and can't find anything.

Does anyone else have Fibro in their face? Apart from pain killers what else can sooth it.? Thanks in advance..

Removing some of my teeth didn't help me - honestly been there done that! I was desperate to ease what I thought was toothache but it wasn't☹️ Ended up at the Kings Dental Hospital. They found that I was clenching my teeth and grinding them overnight. You may find that a soft mouth guard helps if you are doing the same, my facial muscles were tight and aching and even giving earache too. Since using the guard and having a decent fitting denture to bridge the gap of the wrongly removed teeth I haven't really had anything but the odd twinge. Hope you find some relief soon.

Thank you so much for replying, do I get the mouth guard from the dentist or from Boots and mould it myself. Is it like the guards they have for rugby!!! They look huge😂 I tried chewing gum at night but it fell out and got stuck in my hair😂😂 I think you might be right as there have been a few hiccups lately and I have not been sleeping well so maybe the tension is causing me to clench my teeth. I will sort it next week, thank you again.😊😊

I have a mouth guard which was from the dentist. They did a mould and then checked it was right. I just wear it at night and it definitely helps with grinding and the discomfort that causes.

The dentist made the mouth guard - really flexible and thin so doesn't interfere at all and in fact I hardly know it's there.

I'm going to make an appointment tomorrow to get it organised. Thank you😊

Sounds like TMJ. My dentist suggested going onto Oxford University Hospitals web sight where there is a host of information and exercises. Mouth guards are very helpful but get your dentist to organise it as ill fitting ones can do more harm tham good. Best of luck.

Thank you for that. I have got myself an appointment for this Friday😮 which is amazing. I will look at the exercises and see if they help.😊

I have a lot of pain in my face, my cheek bones feel like they are on fire my chin feels like it is twice the size it should be but of course it isn't, my jaw aches all the time. Unfortunately my teeth have caused a lot of the problem, I have been waiting since May 2022 to go into. hospital for them removing, it has taken so long I only have 3 left for them to remove. However, I still have to go in because parts of the roots are still in the gums. My dentist showed me the x-rays there are lines like perforated lines round my teeth, that is where the problem is. I don't think it is anything to do with fibro, I think I just don't have any luck.

I'm having a bout of this at the moment. Teeth clenching Ng causes it, I think mine is leading bon from stiff back and getting 'tech neck' bending over looking at my phone too much. The jaw joint muscles be sure and tight can refer pain all over your teeth and face. I have had cheek pain and sinus like pain, pain in my throat beneath the jaw. Any sensitive area of your teeth or any crowns or fillings are going to play up

I use moistened flannels heated in the microwave for 30 seconds, and if not too hot, held in front of ear on muscles for count of 60. Repeat a few times. Also stretching exercise from Pain free by Pete Egoscue and Taking control of TMJ by Robert O Uppgaard. YouTube may have more up to date stuff. Also I use Alexander Technique, I lay on my bed (instead of floor) with a thick book like an encyclopaedia, with my knees bent, this helps relax down the neck muscles.

It's our old friend 'general stress management ' as well I'm afraid.

Yes it's diffinatly due to stress, my mother is very ill at the moment. My grandsons rugby friend has just died, my son is unemployed and they are expecting another baby. It just all seems to be going off at the mo. I try to be calm and upbeat so I suppose it has to settle somewhere. I will keep on top of the painkillers and hope it eases soon, thank you for replying to me😊😊

hi this is such a painful thing to have. I did have three teeth out and next week I’m having a bridge fitted. Id had a loose tooth for ages but wasn’t given me any problems but it had made the other two loose. The only other thing I can suggest is rinsing regularly with cooled boiled salted water just to help soothe Im sorry I can’t give anymore advice. Hope it eases for you very soon xx

Hi Broadfield. I have fibro but also have other ‘things’ including Functional Neurological Disorder. My brain gets pain messages mixed (to put things simply) and I have sensitive hearing, photosensitivity and heightened sense of smell. Just reading your post has set my teeth on edge. It just takes one thing ( a lawnmower, vacuum cleaner, drilling etc) to set my teeth off. I had to put off two hygienist appointments because just the thought of the noise was making me feel anxious. I was well overdue a good sonic clean so made my husband take me. I dosed myself with Diazepam and Paracetamol and just tried to cope. The hygienist was very good and kept stopping so I could start breathing properly and release my grip on the arms of the chair. I can honestly say it is a nightmare. I can understand what you’re going through but please don’t have any teeth out. My face, jaw and ears throb and I get headaches too. Unfortunately, Fibromyalgia affects so many different parts of our body and aspects of our life. I hope you find something that helps you soon because it can be quite depressing. Sorry, I haven’t been much help but in the days when I took Gabapentin for sciatic nerve pain was the only time I didn’t experience problems at the dentist. That was a good few years ago but tried it again more recently and it made me sick. It could be worth asking your GP about it though. Good luck. Nic xx

My brother has FND, that's so painful.. I'm going to be brave and visit the dentist for a mouth guard to stop me clenching and grinding my teeth when I'm worried, maybe that will help. . Thank you for replying to me 😊

Hi Broadfield,

I feel your pain,I was diagnosed with fibro 13 years ago, along with cfs and hypo thyroidism,Then for some reason (dentist couldnt figure out) my teeth started falling out?

Went and had xrays , my teeth apart from 6 on the bottom were rotten!

I had dentures fitted, couldnt get on with them, thank goodness for face masks,

Apparently I have a calcium defficiency. ???This is a real bummer

Ill be having the others removed and fitted with a better pair.

So I do feel for you,

I have to take 6mg of diazepam just to get out of my house,

I hope you feel better soon,

Take care

Oh Debs that's so awful for you.I have relieved my CFS, after 26years with some supplement recommended by Cambridge university and Adenbrooks hospital after a trial they did for long Covid.

Multi phytonutrient complex by Viridian and Lactobacillius Acidophilus by Oxford Vitality.

I take the Multi phytonutrient complex in the morning with breakfast or a milky drink and the

Lactobacillius Acidophilus with my evening meal.

And OMGoodness do I feel better. I can actually keep upright untill evening. I'm now 67years so don't expect to feel as good as I did at 40years when it took me down but I have a go on the exercise bike every morning, walk the dog when she is well enough, pick up the grandchildren from school and do voluntary work once or twice a week. All this in the last 6 months since I started takeing them. I get them off Amazon!!!! They have given me my life back, I just need to crack this face pain before I have all my teeth pulled too😁 I hope your new set work for you and you get some relief.

Thanks for your reply😁

So much destuction, Ive had my PIP assesment now,And stay on the same My letter said I shouldnt have another for 5 years, yaaaeeeh I just think for all of us that have this crappy Illnesses are sent to us just how much of every single thing can we fight through,( sorry turned into a bit of a rant) take care

Broadfield profile image
Broadfield in reply to Debsdelight72

Rant away😁 We either rant or cry!! I'm sure ranting is better for us as crying gives a belting headache🤕 We all try to be so cheerful and positive. The conversation goes............Them...... But you always look so well.

Me............ Oh I am, you just don't see me when I'm not.

Them...... Well it's good to see you looking so cheerful.

Do I thank them at this point, agree, or just smile. Because nobody but us knows how hard it is to be cheerful and positive when you feel like your face is falling apart or your legs are about to give out.

It's crap and this is the place to express those frustrated emotions

If I were to rant to a friend or relative they would point out everything I should be grateful for. I am very grateful for everything I have, just angry at the years I have lost and the pain that I have to deal with. This doesn't mean we are negative it means that sometimes it's a struggle.

These power chairs are a life saver. I felt daft at first but soon enjoyed bombing around the village, such freedom😁😁

I saw this and thought it could apply to some of us,

She died and was replaced with one, that can barely funtion

I miss driving a bus,I worked really hard for my licence, Just have been informed that the dentist is removing the six I have left on Sat and she said I can go whiter than before, Not likeJimmy Carr but will help get a little confidence back,

Broadfield in reply to Debsdelight72

Poor old Jimmy Carr, loosening his sense of self through fame and fortune. No don't have teeth as white as those!!! When we look at some of these so called stars all we see is teeth😮 It's good to have a nice set of nashers but not if they are like a freshly painted wall😂😂 Gosh I hope they are comfortable for you and give you the confidence to give a big smile 😃

I unfortunately also have face pain, it starts in my temple then travels around my eye and into my jaw. Some days I get pain in my ears too. I can only take paracetamol, as I've now got troubles with stronger pain killers. I spent 3 years at the dental hospital with re alignment of my jaw, teeth checked bites checked. Then told its fibro! So I make sure I keep on top of the pain and take 8 paracetamol a day. I will read other replies you get with interest. Hopefully someone out there will have some answers. Take care

GrumpyTired profile image
GrumpyTired

I can sympathise! I get terrible face pain at least 5 days per week. I tried mouth guards which didn't help much. I later got diagnosed with TMJ and the theory is it's all caused by that but the only thing they could suggest was daily mouth excercises and meditation. I do those, but i still have chronic face pain. My GP thought it might be the Lyrica I'm on for the Fibro pain, so i gave that up and it still hurts. Next she wants me to give up the duloxotine i'm on for fibro pain too in case it's jaw clenching caused by SNRI's.

I find parecetomol or other pain killers don't help atall - I'm at a total loss and at this point every health professional just points at the fibro and TMJ and says it's that, nothing elese to try.

I could weep, honestly. Hope you find some relief

Broadfield profile image
Broadfield in reply to GrumpyTired

Oh my goodness, that's just shocking. I could weep at the moment because I've just had tea and am now in sooo much pain. Life's a bitch sometimes especially when there is no help.I have got a dental appointment for fri so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they can relieve me of some of the pain because no way am I going to try and give up Duloxetine, it saved me from running away😂😂

DONT DO IT. apparently its the worse thing you can do. and i did, the pain was so close to suicidal i had ALL my teeth ripped out i had to go hospital because i felt everything even tho i had 6/7 numbing needles. I cant even wear dentures i get severe headaches and jaw ache after awhile, and end up taking them out. Dentist managed get 4 out in the beginning and it was heaven,,,,, for about 6weeks. i begged and pleaded to take the lot he argued he had trained to care for teeth not ripout perfectly healthy ones. But i won in the end. There is something online, i printed it all off and took it to the dentist, and asked him to try look thru it see if it helps to understand more, he had another patient and it turned out she had the same. Research it Its something muscoloskeletal or something like that, in search facial pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic headaches, and see if u notice a word that looks like skeletal 1 and 'facial' I have forgotten a whole lot more than i will ever remember again sorry i cant be of any help, BUT DONT RIPOUT!! The information you find tells u not to do that either. You may find a lot of medical jargon mixed up in there to, if you have a printer maybe printout and show dentist. GOOD LUCK

Broadfield in reply to ANJI-UK

You are right ofcourse, it would be madness. I have just seen the dentist again and had to have one tooth removed as it was loose and causing so much pain I couldn't close my mouth!!!! She said I had had an abscess in it and it had eaten a hole in the root. It took three injections to numb my gum and the relief lasted two days😑I'm now downing painkillers every four hour's to keep me sane😜 The dentist has suggested a mouth guard at night as I may be clenching my jaw and making the Fibro worse so I go for that fitting in two weeks time. Let's hope that helps.I will look for that artical, meanwhile I will wipe away the tears and slap a smile on my face and pretend all is well with the world.

Thank you for replying, I'm so sad to hear of your plight, it's a shockingly painful condition, I hope for all our sakes they can find an answer for us.😊
