Yes I have a blue badge and it was a simple process. I arrived in reception, occupational therapist took me through to an office for a general chat, she took me back to reception and watched me leave and go back to the car park. Badge arrived few days later.

not all disabilities are visible so although someone looks as if they don’t have a problem with mobility they may well need a blue badge. My father had one - he was badly affected by asbestos and had severe breathing problems but he could walk without limping. Those with severe anxiety/agoraphobia and the like can be entitled to a badge. Cancer patients and those with life limiting illnesses can also be entitled to a blue badge. The decision is that of the local authority unless you are in receipt of higher level PIP where I believe it is an automatic entitlement although application is still required.

Thank u so much replying so quickly , what u is exactly what I thought alot are not visible I said that to them on the phone with me but he was aliment it was only on mobility but he did say I sound like I need an assessment and judge me because I'm working but said Iam only doing a couple of days I have to for money even though I'm in pain . I don't drive much any more I rely on others .

Careful what you say about other people and what you deem as whether they are disabled or not.

I can get in and out of a car quite easily and walk but.......I AM BLIND BUT AS I am told all too often...don't look it....but I have automatic right to vcarry a blue badge

Not all disabilities are visible

There those who actualy can walk and work I new someone and I'm sorry but I got judged on that it realy got me angry thats all . . Its all about mobilty in there eyes with fibro . what they said to me . We are all different in all ways I no that . was mad about d from them because I need to be nearer and bigger space to get out because I struggle I don't think is a bad thing and need to look at other things with fibro to help us and can't drive any more due to bad pain on left side in agony so need a badge has bus stops are too far

Hi Michelleswshopping.

I have a blue badge all i had to do was apply to my local council. This was done by completing a form and submitting it to the council. It was very straight forward and i had a badge in three weeks. Hope this helps John.

Thanks John. I've just been judged over the phone call but have passed that and are seeing me in a couple of weeks . Just seems they go on about mobility which Iam realy bad can't get out of the car and need more space I didn't think it was a bad thing to say to them and told them can't drive much anymore and bus stops are too far for me has the pain is so bad has I'm up hill so I need others to drive me and because I still work I was judged on that too I only do a couple of days I felt its just not good enough. Xx

although some disabilities are invisible, there are some who get a blue badge even though they can walk, I know at least two with autism that have badges, the criteria for every case is different!!

Michelleswshopping profile image
Michelleswshopping in reply toangelm54

Yeah I no that I look after others with a disability and they would get a badge . But they just seemed to go on about mobility itbwas frustrating that's all and need to lookxat other areas with fibro like why other ways u might need it too . I can't even get out of the car and need a bigger space to get out and closer because of the pain x

I have a BB but to those like you who have their own ideas as to why people should be awarded them...never judge a book by its cover

Sorry didn't mean it in that way yes your right u cant judge a book by its cover there is alot of visible disabilities I look after a few clients and no that . And have family members who have one and known who can't get one so u surely can understand why lI feel like i do . The badge gets abused by alot of people I've seen it with my own eyes . ike fibro is different for everyone and certain reasons why we will need it and should not just for mobility t for fibro . Thats all i ment . although I can't walk much I can't get out of a car need a bigger space has I struggle and need othersto take me most times .

Good morning.I have a blue parking badge. During the face to face assessment the I was asked alot of questions regarding what I was able to physically do and how far I can walk. He also walked me to the car to assess how far I could walk. Which was only a short distance. It is difficult to get but if you get turned down always appeal. Good luck x

Hi I found it very very difficult to get a Blue badge I applied for 7yrs before I got one I kepted tell them I needed to park as close as possible to the building to save my energy, or I will end up with P.E.M but they said No. When I got it I was in a wheelchair I'm so bad now and on lower level PIP. SO HAD to go to the centre, have since been to higher level take care 🙂

not all disabilities are visible can’t believe you would put such a comment on here just because you think someone can get in and out a car and seem to walk fine or better than you as you put it never judge a book by it’s cover is a good saying I think

Michelleswshopping profile image
Michelleswshopping in reply toFlowerc

Not in that way , i no that ii look after those with disabilities I no how it works . How frustrating do u think it is when they judge u . It's because they go on about mobility that's all not any other issues that's all they focused on even though I can't walk and can be worse each day . Needing to be nearer so I can get out . So that's why

While the criteria is mainly based on mobility, there are other criteria that may apply and the criteria changed a few years, which opened it up to people with mental health, learning disabilities, autism etc - who may be able to walk but need to park close by for other reasons. Also, if you do not qualify automatically due to pip, the criteria varies depending on your local authority

It can be frustrating when you see someone who appears to be fitter than you qualify for benefits such as a blue badge - I know that someone seeing me get out my car some days could assume there's nothing wrong with me because I can walk thru the pain to a certain extent .... But see me after walking round the shop, and it's a completely different story.

Michelleswshopping profile image
Michelleswshopping in reply toHazel_Angelstar

Well this is it I'm in the same boat with u walking and but I can't even get out of the car and can't drive much and rely on others and need to be nearer to shop and was judged on the phone for saying all that yet this is not visible but yet my mental health is effected and on tablets but not enough . There's us who is genuine and others who are not which is quite frustrated and none of this is in a mean way but when u are fighting for just a bit of help and never needed anything before and can't get a thing.

Hazel_Angelstar profile image
Hazel_AngelstarAdministratorFMA UK Staff in reply toMichelleswshopping

I totally understand - and it often comes down to the opinion of one person whether they think you may the criteria or not....and like you say, how can they judge your walking ability over a phone call (our local authority you need to do a walking test as part of the assessment)

Michelleswshopping profile image
Michelleswshopping in reply toHazel_Angelstar

Exactly, and it shouldn't be on just mobility for fibro has I also need it for other reason like nearer shop , easier to get out of the car need to open door wide . They want more evidence from doctors and others who I have seen but not sure if all this is worth it . So any advise . Do u have blue badge ?

Hazel_Angelstar profile image
Hazel_AngelstarAdministratorFMA UK Staff in reply toMichelleswshopping

Unfortunately, the other reasons are not taken into account

I get mine because I receive pip. I think asking for further evidence from gp or other health professional is standard practice

Michelleswshopping profile image
Michelleswshopping in reply toHazel_Angelstar

Yeah I understand that .dont blame them at all . but want be enough time to get anything due to my assessment appointment coming up . Not sure what to do . Many thanks

Did you get it with PIP, or are you going through the Council?

Councils can be sticky over blue badges, although they shouldn't be: it's not as if they have to pay for them themselves! My council in Wales is a horror!

Cheers, Midori

Michelleswshopping profile image
Michelleswshopping in reply toMidori

Yeah I'm going through the council . I can understand why has there is alot of people who take the mick with the badges xx

The local council make the decision on blue badges. If you have been granted lower/higher rate on mobility in your PIP assessment than superseds the council and should be automatic. If they still want an assessment, telephone them and make sure they know you have a mobility award. If they do, tell them they will have to come out to you as your mobility is too poor to go to them. You can get a full copy of your PIP medical from the DWP just phone and request it. Good luck xx

Michelleswshopping in reply toJan1964

Thank u for messaging , no I don't get pip and have an assessment to go down . And passed the phone call . But thank u xx

Jan1964 profile image
Jan1964 in reply toMichelleswshopping

With all the pain and restrictions you have, if you haven't already done so try applying for PIP. I know you said "for other things" as well as mobility, and you can get higher rate PIP if you have significant anxiety or need someone to support you going out. My friend got mobility and care on PIP due to a condition that makes her put on a lot of weight, which makes it hard for her to get around. I don't know your conditions and it's not my business, but it is worth a try. Get evidence from your health professions, and fill out a form. If you aren't awarded the first time, appeal and keep applying.

Hugs xx

I got refused a badge after my mobility assessment. I was told that although I was having some issues with gait, I did not respond as if in pain, that the ability to get a in and out a car not one of the criteria neither is extreme fatigue.

Also because I chose to not use my stick constantly it can't be counted.

It did not matter that I recieve standard rate care of pip.

That I can walk even if it takes twice as long.

So was refused.

It's so frustrating having to fight for everything.

Sorry to here that . And that's for message . God they are so bad with the criteria u can have one good day and be penalised if u no what I mean and because u was honest they was like that . U sound so genuine like me who realy needs help . I'm worried I will be rejected no doubt I told them on the phone not to do it in metres when explaining has don't understand it like that can u do it another way and said length of a bus . Which did help and that's when he said he will see me if I can't even do help way to end of a bus if I constantly stop . Hope that helped you too so please reapply u obviously need it . Good luck xx
