Bed topper or not? Double or single? What is your opinion on bed toppers please.

I sleep in a kingsize bed with my lovely husband. Sometimes I become hot, but I am in need of something to make me more comfortable. What do I do? Get a single and put it on the double bed? Do they roll up? Get a kingsize and hope hubby will love it too? Will it help and what type/thickness? I cannot afford a new mattress so really need input please.

I suffer from restless leg syndrome and cannot sleep on my side either.

Hi Sarah-Jane...From what I can gather everyone thinks they're great as long as they have at least 4cm depth to them. My married daughter who has fibro bought hers (king size bed) from Dunelm Mill over a year ago and it cost about £100. It makes her bed so much more comfortable, she says. Reckon you get what you pay for, so the more you can afford the better quality it should be. I have certainly been toying with the idea. Hopefully others will put more advice on here for you.

And as for the "to buy or not to buy" question - yes yes yes.... makes a huge difference. I also find it *holds* you in the position you're in so you don't move and start to hurt from that - if you know what I mean... x

I was looking at mattresses myself a while back, but although it would be lovely to get a really decent one, it's not something that's affordable. We have a double bed and I went for a double topper, I think it was a 'slumberdown' (or simiiar) I got at Argos and it's been a good buy, although I think I'd go for a thicker one next time.

It doesn't change my restless legs, but it has reduced by about 50% the times I was having to re-position myself.

I have friends with Fibro who swear by Memory Foam toppers, I haven't tried one myself, but they mold (I checked the spelling, but it doesn't look right lol!) to the shape of your body and are very warm too. Hubby and I have a memory foam mattress (not topper) and it's lovely for me. If he gets too hot, he just throws the duvet off himself. I found normal sprung mattresses very uncomfy as the springs hurt my painful areas. It's a matter of trial and error and what's comfortable for each person, we are all different aren't we. :)

I have a memory foam mattress and i think its the most comfortable ive ever had BUT its really roasting hot in all weathers and especially summer,

we have a ceiling fan, and a stand fan in summer as we get too hot, so be carefull if your considering buying one because its made from latex which will make you sweat, i have to get changed sometimes in the night because i suffer terrible night sweats,i can soak the sheets and mattress cover right through so the next mattress i get will be a normal one and not another latex or memory foam as i cant stand the heat, oh and we dont have the heating on in our room even in winter, hope this helps, Amanda.

I bought a poundstretcher topper and its only about 1cm thick. I definately need a proper one, but £100 is a huge chunk of money. Any ideas?

For a quick fix, just by another poundstretcher topper; at their prices you could add another 2 or 3 til you are comfortable while you save up.

Mine was a cheaper one, as long as you give it a shake every day it works. I love mine, and I have a double bed all to myself, I also have about 6 pillows placed around me like a cocoon, so I would say YES! get one. Duvet and Pillow Warehouse are another good make. Google them I think they only sell online

Bought a memory foam topper about 2 inches thick but just could'nt bear the feel of it - set my teeth on edge. It also makes you very hot - not so good when having night sweats too. Cut mine in half and put it on the spare bed.

I just bought a kingsize mattress topper memory foam from LIDDL'S (UK) One of last weeks offers for £39.99 5cm thick and very comfortable, as my mattress was not so comfortable & I can only sleep well on my back due to severe pain all over my body , I have an expensive mattress which I couldn't afford to sell on or throw so if your quick you may still be anble to find the odd one left if you have a coupla LIDDL stores near by Highly recomended otherwise e-bay.

best of luck

Thanks everyone. The only concern seems to be the heat generated.

i have a mattress topper and i did have restless legs, i was told by the EMP doctor, to ask my doctor about going to sleep clinic, as i may suffer from sleep apnea. after staying at a sleep clinic they found out that not only did i have sleep apnea, but i suffered from Hypopnea as well. Also my doctor started me on iron tablets.

Thank you for that information. I had not heard of that before. It was interesting to look up and I am pretty sure my husband has this, but just try getting him to the doctors when he even denys snoring!

It's a good idea to buy a simple single topper so that you can take it away with you to strange beds.

Hi - new to this site and having a browse around and spotted your comment. I got a topper a few months ago and it has helped me a lot. I got mine from TJ Hughes for about £70 for a kingsize. Apart from Fibro and arthritis I suffer from Hypermobility and was due an op on my foot which has been postponed because I'm not in as much pain as I was before I got the mattress. They are warm but worth it. Hugs Susanx

If you get one, get as thick as possible but you do get very hot and sweaty as its manmade. Why not try a folded duvet? If its feather it'll not keep u hotn sweaty. I prefer this. Maybe try any spare quilt firstx before spending money. Good luck x

I loved my topper but can't get on with the pillows. I love my latex pillow.

I would recommend an adjustable bed if you can get one. I got two single one's ( frames only ) for £75 off preloved. I find it helps my pain. Most of the time I have my legs elevated and sometimes my head a little if the pain in my neck prefers it
