I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on a link between fibromyalgia and HH?
I’m not sure if there’s been any research on a link, but feel that my tummy troubles are getting worse, and a recent endoscopy and colonoscopy revealed a sliding hiatus hernia.
Biopsies have been sent off for anything else, but I can’t help but feel there’s a link.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and any thoughts shared.

HI i have a Hiatus hernia as well i don't know if there is a link but i had the fibro before the hernia. It has caused terrible heartburn i have had the camera twice and now a PH test. 24 hours with a tube up my nose. I have now found out that i have Bronchiectasis i think it has been caused by all the acid leaking from the hernia in my lung and has caused damage. I have for over 5 years had a cough bringing up all different colors at the moment i feel depressed about it all its as if its never ending always something new health wise.
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 2014 after going to many many specialist for 2 yrs who had no idea what was wrong a couple yrs after that i learned i have a hernia it sucks so for those who suffer i know how u feel wouldnt wish this on anyone
I don’t think there is a link as such, but it is quite common for people to have both Fibro & Hiatus Hernia. That includes myself. In my case I was diagnosed with HH 20 yrs before Fibro.
More woman than men get diagnosed with HH. Triggers can be Pregnancy, and being overweight, particularly where the fat is around your middle. In both cases, it pushes the Stomach up into the Diaphragm, and through into the Oesophagus, via the valve that separates the Oesophagus from the Stomach.
It would be interesting to know just how many people there are with both conditions.
I have both and was diagnosed in 1996. I take Pantaprozole for the acid reflux caused by hiatal hernia and Gabapentin 300 mg. twice daily for fibromyalgia. It sure helps. If I don't take the Pantaprozole, I get sick with the acid reflux and any other brand does not work. Once, I ran out while on vacationing...WRONG thing to do. I ended up in the hospital ER.
I was diagnosed with HH 12 years after being diagnosed with FMS. I also have GORD and 2 years ago with Delayed Gastro Emptying. I believe they’re linked. My gastroenterologist doesn’t believe so. However when pushed he admitted that if I had of been diagnosed with MS I would have had the expensive tests to diagnose the DGE 5 years beforehand saving me years of agony. Just as an FMS flare up starts I can feel my digestive system slow down. I asked if there could be a link I.e. flare up causes Gastro problems or Gastro problems causing flare ups. Eventually after a few years he’s admitted he’s beginning to think there is a link.
Thank you, I’ve read on,one, but with my brain the way it is these days I cannot recount to everyone on here the research etc but the outcome was that a lot of people felt that those with fibromyalgia, ms or any other condition would have a HH. I was only investigated due to ongoing digestive problems which GP put down to IBS for years. This procedure was a year down the line from referral from GP for investigation.
From being fit and healthy it feels that everything in my body is breaking down: even my stomach and internal organs so it seems.
I doubt we will never know the true extent of Fibromyalgia, not in this lifetime anyway, but it appears to attack a lot more than GPS and the medical profession believe, with maybe the exception of some.
Sorry for the long reply, it’s meant for everyone who replied 😆
My first endoscopy found that I had Barrett's oesophagus - many years ago but after fibro diagnosis - the second, hiatus hernia. Who knows whether they're linked, only way is to get all fibromites (or a proportion) and carry out a poll
yes i suffer from stomach acid reflux . also have a strange sensation at night as though my throat has pressure on it . taking zantac and gaviscon which has settle the acid and the sensation is not as bad but still there . interestingly i was on statins and the whole gastric thing set off big time . off them at the moment was told by doc to saty of till this all resolves
. she did not give me an explation of the almost choking sensation . anyone else experiencing this sensation . it worries me
in thepast ive had helipylori and gastritis which was diagnosed after a bleed and subsequent endoscopy ----yeach
I have got broth first HH about 25 years ago and had a repeat operation this was a big one now a few years ago told I have a HH not really being anything done for this. Now with CFME GPS. say C F. and Fibromyalgia but not being deinosed with Fibro. although when I tell them about where the pain is get told that’s fibro for you. An other tell me they can’t do anything for me they don’t know what is going on I have had a lot of tests done and still having some more done this all started in 2014 I was hoping I should have known by now from GPS.Thyroid and more. I am not sure with spelling so find it hard doing this so don’t come on hear that offent but I read on hear all the time, I find it interesting it helps me a lot. I was told I that I have got a thyroid problem about 30 years ago.
Hope all the best for you all .
Hi there. Please be aware that once the Vagus Nerve is irritated by a hernia, a multitude of symptoms can arise from this, in particular anything that affects the sympathetic nervous system, including Fibromyalgia.
