I have another question, i hope you dont mind me picking your brains?!!
I am having a very painful day today and my hubby feels that i should give up my netball as it might be exacerbating my fibro.
Do any of you do physical exercise? Does it make you feel better or worse?
The reason i chose to play netball is because its a team sport and if i dont go will let my team mates down. Not only that but i love it, really enjoy it. My team mates know about my condition and i am able to play in short spurts.
If you ask any health profession they would say that exercise with fibro is really important. I guess it depends on the individual.
I used to really love exercise and was full on in the gym when the symptoms started. I lifted really heavy weights and did full on sessions three/four times a week! it got to the point when I couldn't even do my warm ups without pain and exhaustion. This left me feeling really depressed and I just gave up EVERYTHING and I sort of self sabotaged myself with food etc which I deeply regret.
I am starting again with yoga as it is gentle and will hopefully help with stretching and strengthening. I think that our bodies are designed to move in some way or another, but you have to listen to what it is saying to you in respect of pain and energy.
The only advice I have is just don't give up everything like I did as I fell in to deep de conditioning and have no muscle mass left at all. xx
I like Badminton as something you have to react to when playing where as other things like weights is a planned movement.
So you move in many directions and have to anticipate the opponents shots to be able to return shuttle.
Used to play lots beat everyone in my sportscenter at singles had so many trick shots like a serve right to back base line then a return just tipping over the net!
Only you know your limits, if possible don't give up on exercise all together but it is vital not to overdo it, I can manage tai chi and although painful I walk every day, we are all different, some are badly affected and can do very little. Do what is comfortable, all best wishes xx
If you enjoy it and it doesn't make you unduly fatigued or in pain afterwards I would still do it. Your body will tell you when to stop. It is good that your teammates are aware of your condition but still want you in the team. In my opinion it is much better than sitting at home letting the old muscles waste away.x
If you can play without too many after effects, keep going!
Once you stop you will find yourself becoming isolated from your friends, they will drop away because you are no longer able to play. it won't be deliberate, but you won't be part of 'the Team' any more.
Its unpleasant, but I found it true when I could no longer ride or dance. Loss of social life is really isolating to a person with a long term condition. Please keep going as long as you possibly can.
