Hey

It has been suggested that I should try out water aerobics. Has anyone tried this and benefited from it?

Had water therapy and that was good but a general water aerobics a great mistake. Found could not get out of the pool on my own and relapsed for weeks.

I am afraid I don't know. I used to go swimming, which I love, but it was too much. I was so ill all the time I had to give it up.

No harm in trying it and seeing how you get on. Good luck.

Like all things its about personal preference and knowing yourself. I've done water aerobics before and found that even in the water there were exercises I couldn't do or made my pain worse.

Its one of those things which is hard to say yes or no too until you've given it a try. The water provides support but it can make movements harder, which if you are feeling sore can aggravate it.

If you feel you can manage it, give it a try and then you will know whether you can cope doing it either with all of it or some of the exercises.

I don't know how to advise on that one. Before I became ill I used to swim 75 lengths a week and at one of my sessions there was always water aerobics going on and it looked quite hard core stuff to me but of course there are different levels. I would ask if you could perhaps have a taster session and see how you go. You know your own body but many of the exercises are using the arms and shoulders and twisting the back all good if you are fit but I know with my spine problems it would be a no.

Had 6 sessions of hydrotherapy and that was marvellous but it was just half an hour and with aexperienced physio who was stopping you when he could see you were overdoing it. I think with these things you need to build up gently. If you already swim and can do breast stroke without difficulty you might be able to cope.

If you decide to give it a try we would be interested in how you get on.x

Hi I have had fibromyalgia for over 4 years - and have been going to aqua aerobics twice a week -for the last 18 months and I can't manage without it - it gets my joints and muscles working and I made some great friends there (we go for a coffee after it) I also swim once a week (just 15 lengths). - I find sitting down (watching TV) is my enemy - I seize up - it maybe too much for you - but the good thing about aqua is you only do what you can manage - give it a try at least once (it also lifts my mood) -good luck - Neese x

I did it for a while. I loved it. As a non swimmer it was nice to be in the water. However in saying that I did find that the water was too cold for me after a while. Plus it did wipe me out for a good few days afterwards. The exercises could be quite tough for someone with disabilities and I know I overdid it. The instructor was aware of my fibro and just said do what you can but in retrospect that wasn't helpful for me as I enjoyed it and wanted to do the full workout as I would have done if I had a normal body. I also had difficulties getting in and out of the pool. I guess the answer is as others have said - try it and see how you feel, but don't over do it and tell the instructor of your difficulties.

It can be helpful, tell the instructor your limitations, they will understand, go at your own pace xxx

Hi deltamatrix

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? It is not something that I have tried but I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck if you decide to give it a go!

All my hopes and dreams for you

Hi I do water aerobics. Last August I could hardly walk and was in a lot of pain. Now with meds and doing water aerobics 3 times a week I'm back to work full time. If I don't do it I find my legs starting to get painful. It's definitely worked for me and I love it. I also swim aswell get do many lengths as my arms start to hurt but it's all helped me. Took several weeks to see improvement and at first it seemed like I was in a bit more pain, but after 2 weeks of going 5 times a week I started seeing an improvement. 😀
