Hi teddy245

I have had my Vitamin b12 checked (about 3 years ago), along with other things but I did not need injections or any other supplements fortunately. I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Morning ken Nurse Gladys Emanuel (open all hours) I notice daily lots of people asking about injections of this and that and I am guessing they are looking for some kind of energy level boost? I worry people are not aware that we can overdose on Vitamins; maybe we can get them advise on foods that have high energy levels like bananas for protein etc. green veg for iron like spinach white cabbage and bean sprouts that would make a lovely stir fry with some chicken or just a veggie one.. I tried b12- 2 years ago and it did nothing and so was a waste of money. Your comments always wise and helpful.

Hi caz-54

I agree with completely! As you can overdose on just about any supplement with serious consequences. I think it would be wonderful to try and get folk to eat good proper food that contains all of the vitamins and minerals that the body needs. The only supplement that I take is a prescribed Acrette D3 to accompany my Alendronic Acid as I have Osteoporosis.

There was an excellent feature a few years ago on NHS Choices about the dangers of exceeding the daily Vitamin D dosage unless it was deemed necessary for a short period of time due to a severe deficiency.

Have my B12 checked annually. To avoid having shots...and one year they took me into hospital for transfusion ....I take a slow release iron supplement that also has b12 and b6 in it

If the levels drop my pain gets worse

Hope this helps

Gentle hugs x

I am type 2 diabetic and have to take metformin. The metformin in my and many other cases stops B12 from being produced naturally. I have injections at the moment every 6 months after blood tests for diabetes control and also the B12 levels. The injection is in the arm, not painful, and administered at my doctors surgery by my diabetic nurse. The lack of B12 does contribute to lack of energy and causes memory loss.

Hi Teddy245, I have pernicious anemia which I'd due to my body not producing enough red blood cells. I have my B12 injection every 12 weeks. This is classed as an auto immune disease, it is a straight forward having the injections, and does not hurt. To start with you have a course of 6 injections over 2 weeks then every 12 weeks. I can honestly say it is the way to go. I know I will be on the B12 for life, this is better than feeling ill as I did before. Have a chat with the nurse or GP whoever it is you see and ask them to explain a bit more. Good Luck and gentle hugs. Izzy x

Hi. You don't b12info d iron supplements because your b12 is low, you need b12 supplements! Maybe your doc gave you the iron because your iron is low too? For b12 to work properly you need a good folate level.

I have b12 deficiency as I can't absorb it, due to no stomach acid caused by an underactive thyroid. GP's in the UK don't recognise a low b12 unless it is exceptionally low so many people suffer. As a deficiency is very serious you must be treated, otherwise you it can result in permanent neurological damage. I have permanent neurological damage as doctor's didn't tell me mine was low in 2003! Only found out 3 months ago. I used sublingual (under the tongue) b12 lozenges by Jarrow from Amazon. The pain in my body significantly reduced and my mobility improved. I now inject weekly. You need supplements for life if you are deficient.

If you are deficient due to your diet, ie you are vegetarian or vegan then b12 tablets or lozenges will work. What was your b12 level? Doctors don't really understand about b12 because they are not taught much about nutrition. People are deficient and have significan pain and mobility issues, fatigue and brain fog. Sound familiar?

Look at the following for more information, especially look at the symptom lists b12d.org also b12awareness.org also b12info.org finally pernicious-anaemia-society.org b12 deficiency is often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia, MS, depression, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ME/CFS.

Soory for the long reply but b12 deficiency is a serious thing so if you are deficient, anything under 500, then you need to be treated. Good luck. :-)

Not sure if I have typed the links correctly, but google you will find them. :-)

Can't correct the first line by editing. I'm not typing it all again!

A few years ago I was found to have quite low levels of B12 and Iron this is known as pernicious anemia.

I was given B12 shots in the arm and for a short while this can be quite painful either going in or just after the shot. The reason I was told it hurt is

because The B12 shot is injected straight in to the muscle. I also had to take iron pills for a few months

while taking the B12 shots. They said most people knew when they were ready for their shot as they began to feel more tire. After the shot most folks feel a rise in energy levels. I have to say I never experienced this unfotunately.

The only way to find out if your lacking in B12 /iron is through having it tested. Taking it via vitamins will not help. Simply because it is not strong enough to do the job. Also if you don't need B12 topping it up with suplements can also cause problems. xx
