Hydrotherapy

I have had 5 sessions of hydrotherapy with the NHS. It has been great and enabled me to get some exercise and feel good about it. Sadly I can only have 6 sessions and the last one is Thursday. I would like to continue in a local swimming pool but they are not as warm as the hydro pool. Has anyone else benefited from Hydrotherapy?

Yes definitely I have, and I am very lucky that we were able to purchase a hydrotherapy hot tub too - no we are not the elite but it is worth the expense to get the relief - the other option we also considered was a spa bath being fitted, which would have been cheaper but maybe not so powerful in the relief it gives. I do hope you can find somewhere you can get the much deserved relief, it is the only time I even feel anywhere near normal when I am in the warm water with the relaxation and support it gives the body. If only we could all have a hot tub - wishing you well.

I do have a jacuzzi large corner bath. I have developed epilepsy this year and because of that I am unable to use it when home alone. It does help with aches and pains but no use for exercising. The exercising does help the feel good factor. Since I wrote the first post the Hydrotherapy dept called offering 6 weeks for £45 . There won't be a Physio in the pool but staff are around.

Glad to hear you have a few more sessions. I would also recommend looking locally at hotels, gyms etc to see if they have warm pools and would offer a special rate. I am very fortunate living out in the sticks but only three miles from a health club who have a large spa pool and I pay £50 per month and can use as much as want.

I am too far from hotels with a pool but that is a good idea. I have had to surrender my car license because of epilepsy. I am too far from bus stops. The fatigue is too much to travel far. I have 2 swimming pools fairly close but they are not warm enough . At least going to hospital I can use hospital transport.

Hi yes I definately benefit from it as I cant walk without aids so find it difficult to exercise. I am lucky enough to live in an area where there is a support group for arthritis sufferers based at the hospital hydrotherapy pool. I waited a year to get to the top of the list to be a floater (they phone when there is a place) I only wish I could go more than once a week but this is better than nothing. I have noticed in our physiotherapy dept notice board that there is a private hydro pool in the South of England but think you can only for half hour at a time (it takes me longer than this to get dressed). Might be worth checking internet for hydro pool in your area or even one linked to physio. Hope you can continue with it. Gentle hugs Joolz.x

Thanks Joolz. I am in Devon but the hydro pools are too far away. At least if I can get into the hospital pool if anything goes wrong with me there are medical professionals around. They have just started offering the extra paid sessions so there isn't a waiting list. It might therefore be possible to increase the numbers of sessions. They don't offer a Physio with these sessions.

Hi summersweety1

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? I am not able to to do Hydrotherapy due to having COPD. However, I am delighted that it is working so well for you, and I genuinely hope that you can find a way to keep doing it after your NHS sessions are finished.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Hi summersweety, i am in same position, this week is my fifth appointment of eight. I feel great for the exercise, but have to be very careful not to overdo it as it xan put me out of action for days. Love, love ,love walking into the heated pool! I am now trying to find another heated pool.

in reply toShazzzy

Don't you feel like a lead weight coming out of the pool. Hope you are luckily with finding another pool. Kx

Totally agree, i bob around feeling light as a feather, then climb the stairs to get out and i've turned into the tin man who weigh a ton. Tis horrible. Have decided i would be better off in Atlantis, if only i could breath underwater !!

Its been a while since I've taken to the water - but it made me feel so much lighter (obvious on climbing the steps to get out). Would do it more often but ESA doesn't lend itself to 'treats'.....shame cos it was definitely beneficial, discovered this in the 80's during hydrotherapy - just shows how many have suffered in silence. Sad - as it definitely offers one of the most positive therapies for FM & other similar conditions.

So right . Perhaps some people have PIP that can be used for it. Sadly I have been refused. Hoping that an appeal might work so I can continue.

All the best with your appeal. It's sad that the very things that can help you are just beyond your reach. Take care

Thank you

You're welcome - thought that was an interesting lead that. Your Drs could possibly help. All the best for finding a lovely toasty pool.

Hi whatamug, our gps can refer us to the local swimming baths or gym for exercise to improve health, this is at reduced cost or free. The local pools also offer discount rates to people who r are on a reduced income, always worth asking.

Oh thanks Shazzzy - I didn't know that ...I'll definitely ask about it. Ann

I find the problem with using local pools is that they aren't warm enough. I have a very low body temperature so only comfortable in a hydro pool.

H I was referred for Hydro after my knee arthroscopy back in 2008. Only had 5 sessions, but I then used to pay £48 per 6 weekly sessions at my local hospital. I continued paying for years as I just did all my own exercises in water for all my various pains. Might just of well gone to a spa for this much. But when I moved had to be re referred and again I paid to continue and was surprised to find the new hospital only charged £36 for 6 sessions £12 cheaper even though it was in a more affluentual area !!. Unfortunately when the Covid nonsense started the hydro stopped and still hasn't re opened. Gutted as I used to really work hard I the pool as it was so nice & warm unlike swimming pools which I find too cold. I'm always told to join a health club as they have warmer pools but can't afford to. I'm going to try go to aqua aerobics as I need to try tone up lol 😆. I found hydrotherapy really good as you are able to do so much more exercises in the pool, you do ache a bit but nothing compared to normal exercises. I'm not a swimmer so if my feet don't touch the floor I'm not getting in lol 😆. With all over constant pain I would gladly live in a hot tub or jacuzzi

I have and I love it. It is absolutely my favorite form of physical therapy and I always feel better. I hope you can find a warm swimming pool and buy the floating devices to resume the activities on your own soon.
