Buserelin estrogen cysts and complications - anybody else had this?

Hi all,

I was supposed to have my third FET (a fully medicated cycle on the NHS) in October but I somehow ovulated earlier. So they gave me Buserelin to try to shut off my own hormones and take control with medication so I could do another cycle in Nov. But I developed estrogen cysts on both ovaries from the Buserelin, so we cancelled everything and waited for the cysts to pass. I had my Nov bleed on 22 Nov, approx 10 days after I stopped the Buserelin. I was supposed to get my next bleed in Dec but I am still waiting for it. At this point I am 10 days late. I had some spotting on 16 dec, lower back pain between 22-29 Dec, and then ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I emailed the clinic on the last day of 2024 and they said to wait another week, but I have absolutely 0 symptoms and I am going a bit crazy with worry.

Anybody else had similar experiences? What happened with you?

Hi lovely,

I had a cyst on my right ovary after down-regging with Buserelin. I waited for 1 period and it disappeared with it.

I think my cycle was fairly normal after - but I often find that between treatment my periods are lighter than before so not out of the ordinary.

xx

Thank you Millbanks ! What worries me most is that I didn't have a period at all :( I have never had random spotting before either, so this is all new and scary for me :) But I guess I need to be patient and trust the system :)

I do think that all the meds play havoc with our cycles. Mine have never been the same since going through it all.

They are often lighter and I have had random spotting but I think as long as your lining thickens up enough (usually with the help of meds) it's not really an issue.

If you still don't have one, they can prescribe you norethisterone which will force a period when you stop taking it - I had this after my cyst and I think that helped to clear it out.

Have you spoken to them about what happens next? x

The only thing they said was to email them again if I don't get a bleed in the next 7 days :)

so sorry you are still waiting. I am waiting for FET and have been told there is cyst like forms on my ovaries, that could be the follicles collapsing down which could be delaying my period (7 days late today) but again they've told me to start taking pessarys but to just wait. I dont understand if we don't have the bleed how we can then still have the transfer. a friend told me to watch you tube videos on pressure points to encourage your period the video is by Michelle Rogers. not sure if it'll help you but hope your period arrives soon xx

Thank you! I will try anything at this point.

It can happen with lots of different drugs. I've had three cysts from cycles now. I missed my last period by 3 months, waiting for the 20mm cyst to burst; the nurse said the cyst was not allowing my normal hormonal phases to take place.

She made out it was normal but I would like some closure too instead of taking the nurses advice as gospel. I hope you're ok, wishing you well with your journey.

Thank you AnotherLaura ! Helps to know I'm not the only one although I also hate there are others in this position. Are you on NHS too?

I am freaked out and very angry at them because after they gave me the Buserelin which caused this mess, they told me "oh, actually we could try a natural cycle". And I don't understand why they didn't give me the choice instead of pushing the Buserelin on me. I have read on other forums that they can give birth control or other stuff to try to force a period and burst the cysts, so I will ask about that if I get a chance to talk to them, and then will report back with what they said.

I totally share your frustration on this… all we can do is pester them and change up the questions until we can get the clarification we’re looking for.

It’s hard to say what will and won’t cause them, I’ve learned it’s been a massive guessing game. I took it upon myself to pay for diagnostics and learn about my own body instead of wait. Waiting month after month is time we just don’t have.

I was 38 by the time my partner agreed to having kids 😢 I’m now 40 and on my 3rd/4th round (last one was cancel mid cycle)… and £26k down so far.

Come on 2025, this is our year!! ❤️
