surgery via private healthcare

So I have been advised to have two separate surgeries before continuing with IVF, one to remove a borderline tumour via laparoscopic cystectomy (purely for health reasons as the tumour has the potential to become cancerous), and a hysteroscopy to treat a defective c section scar which may potentially be the cause of my fertility issues. I feel I am likely to need both of them done privately due to NHS timescales though I haven’t actually explored that route yet.

I wonder if anybody has had similar treatment done? Any advice welcome and in particular has anybody found any private healthcare companies to be cheaper? HCA have done my initial quote for the hysteroscopy which was eyewatering. X

It must be so frustrating to have to do these surgeries that take money and time before you even get to try another round oof

For removing the tumour, I think you should try the NHS while you explore other options. Whenever we had anything remotely suspicious with a cancer risk, both my husband and I have been put on fast tracks. So I’d definitely try to get that going on the NHS, as it might move faster than you expect.

Privately, everything we’ve ever been quoted for was never under £5k so I understand your pain. In the past, I had time, so I waited it out on the NHS (it was a uterine polyp removal, and the 9 month wait turned into a 6 month wait on the NHS after cancellations). But now my husband has to do a varicocele procedure and it will have to be private. £5k again.

The only other thing I can think of is that if you have any sort of private medical insurance from work, they will cover some procedures. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Bupa covered my second polyp removal as I didn’t think they did that sort of stuff!

Hopefully this is somewhat helpful and give you some ideas to explore, but I really feel for you and hope that you will be able to get it sorted in a timely manner without breaking the bank. Xx

thanks raverg,

That’s so helpful and appreciated. I’m sorry to hear you have had similar issues. You’re exactly right it is just so frustrating. I mean it shouldn’t be, as one of the surgeries is to ensure my health and the other is potentially to help with the fertility but I had mentally geared up to being towards the end of our journey and I am finding the extra time and costs a real struggle.

Unfortunately we have zero kinds of medical insurance but you’re right I should explore the NHS route before discounting it entirely.

All the best with your husband’s surgery x
