Never ending period after the failed transfer

Hi everyone,

My latest embryo transfer (was done 7 December) also failed. My period started 4 days later than the expected date. I learned that it was normal because of the progesteron injections.

However now it is the 8th day of my period and it is only increasing its thickness and frequency. Normally my periods last 3 days or sometimes some drops come on the 4th day. I have never had 8 days period with this intensity.

I guess many of you will want to respond as "call your clinic or GP". Our clinic is on Christmas holidays! Even if they weren't I have never seen them responding to an unexpected outcome. Their default answer is to wait for the planned next appointment. And whenever I have IVF related unexpected outcomes, GP answers me to contact to the clinic. Thus, there is no hope to hear any answer from neither clinic nor GP. Only those who lived in the Netherlands would relate. Anyways, if you have an idea, other than calling to the clinic or GP, I am curious to hear.

I think that periods can be affected by medications from transfer so may be that causing it. If it gets really painful or worrisome you may need to call the hospital. That’s what my GP would say to me. Hope it settles down for you x

I also thought that it was medications, but it looks like worsening the intensity instead of slowing down. I'll try to reach out to the clinic when their xmas break is over, but I don't expect them to do anything. I have experience before, when I had OHSS with 38.5C, they were just recommending to stop measuring my temperature.. That is the Netherlands.

Hello, I live in the Netherlands and understand you. The last time something similar happened to me, I called emergency because was worried. They told me to go to the hospital. I was examined by a doctor who found nothing abnormal. Then I received a bill at home for 40 EUR, as the doctor did not classify it as an emergency. I paid, but I was also calm. Another alternative, depending on where you live, is to contact a clinic in Belgium. I'm currently undergoing treatment at UZ Gent and although they are on vacation, they have a support and emergency number.

God bless. Thank you for the recommendation.

I’m so sorry about your transfer not working this time. your cycle can be a bit messed up after treatment, our clinic actually call it a ‘withdrawal bleed’ rather than a period after a failed round and say to expect it to be different from your normal cycle, sometimes for me it’s similar and sometimes it’s heavy painful and lasts for ages. Sometimes it’s really light and then j get another a short time after! Every women and every round can be different. I find it especially affected if I’ve taken eostrogen or prostrap/burselin.

As long as it’s not so heavy you are filling a pad in an hour or 2 there’s no need to contact any GP or clinic etc. it should go back to normal after one or 2 cycles if not that’s when seeking advice from the clinic/GP would be helpful but I expect your answer if you did get them is that it’s normal for your period and cycles to be different after treatment. Hope it eases soon for you 💜 xx

Thank you! I tried to contact to the clinic online last night, but all I receive is an automatic response that they will not be available to answer until Jan3. That is really crazy. 😓
