Number of transfers before success or deciding to stop

Hi fellow IVF warriors,

I hope you're all as well as you can be.

I would be interested to hear how many embryo transfers people had before they had success or decided to stop fertility treatment.

Thanks so much. Xx

5 transfers (6 embryos) till I got my twins. I wasn't ready to give up if that transfer hadn't worked but I had decided it was the last with my own eggs.

7 transfers (14 embryos), i am now 37 weeks pregnant. This was going to be my last try, but purely for financial reasons. So it was lucky transfer number 7 🍀

Hi lovely,

I did 6 transfers (10 embryos) before we had success. We’re currently on FET number 3 to try for a sibling but will call it a day after this for all the reasons!

I did 4 egg collections in total xx

Thanks lovely. Where are you at with yours? Xxx

Citizenerased83 profile image
Citizenerased83 in reply toMillbanks

I've had two egg collections in total. Had 4 fets from the first cycle- two miscarriages and two failed implantation. Second cycle we had embryos pgta tested and showed a chromosomal issue with me. So we have 7 embryos that are euploid and should be starting another fet cycle in a few weeks once period starts. One pgta tested euploid embryo failed in April. Xxx

Millbanks profile image
Millbanks in reply toCitizenerased83

Aw sorry to hear that. It’s a rough ride isn’t it.

I had my embryos PGT-A tested too - it’s weird that sometimes they still won’t implant.

Have you had any immunology done? I had my immune panel tested and came back with high NK cells, so was given steroids for my 6th FET which I think was what really helped implantation xx

Citizenerased83 profile image
Citizenerased83 in reply toMillbanks

Thank you, such a rough ride. I had a full thrombotic screening blood tests and am now on clexane as have a mutation on the mthfr gene. Haven't had nk killer cells test done but if this next transfer doesn't work I think I might do that, as well as a hystercopy. So glad it worked for you. Xxx

Millbanks profile image
Millbanks in reply toCitizenerased83

I would recommend for sure, just the bloods - if you need to go again.

Fingers crossed you won’t need to! When are you gearing up for your next one? X

In total: three egg collections (plus one cancelled round) and five transfers, of those 4 BFPs but only one was ultimately successful. The third transfer (first FET) was successful, then I wanted to do a banking round which ironically was a complete distaster, and that transfer and then the next FET (blast from a prior round) weren't successful. Had we not fallen pregnant naturally for the first time waiting for another FET I think I would have just carried on in all honesty, even though I kept telling myself we would just transfer the frosties we had and then stop and me and my OH had discussed only doing that one final round. I don't know if it was because we got a BFPs and then losses, whether it felt like we were so close or had better odds or something, or if trying again was just a way to hold off dealing with the last loss.

Citizenerased83 in reply toFruitandflowers

Thank you for your reply. I'm so sorry you had so many losses. It's a lot to go through. I'm glad you have your miracle now. I know what you mean about continuing because you've seen positive pregnancy tests before. It's so hard to know what the right decisions are sometimes but I would rather do too much treatment than regret it later. X

Fruitandflowers profile image
Fruitandflowers in reply toCitizenerased83

Yes, I didn't want to look back and regret but equally the more you do and the more time and money you spend, and put your body through, I think the balance shifts and you start to wonder if it doesn't work whether you'll also regret having missed big chunk of life. But for me the instinct and drive was too strong and it didn't feel like I was ready to let go (not sure how I would have felt though if it had been straight BFNs each time). We were also lucky as we got one NHS round and then access to loans and funding packages to go private, and that's just not an option for some people.

Citizenerased83 profile image
Citizenerased83 in reply toFruitandflowers

I feel like that too at times re missing out on life. It's so incredibly hard but I think we can only make the decisions that feel right at the time and then be kind to ourselves if later they turned out not how we hoped. Easier said than done though.

7 transfers of 9 embryosAll BFN

3 X tested and euploid

6 X untested but excellent quality (likely 3-4 euploids in those 6 based on the results of our 2 tested cycles)

Now pursuing surrogacy with our amazing friend - following egg collection number 3 we have 3 euploid embryos waiting 🤞🤞🤞

For us, we were in such a statistical minority (<1%) we felt it was wasting our embryos to keep transferring to me

In total 9 transers from 5 OE retrievals + 1 DE retrieval. All BFN. The last failure was my first DE transfer. We have remaining DE embryos but I don't know how long I will keep going. It's tempting to put an end to this madness and cycle of hope and disappointment but this will mean an end to pursuing the life I always thought I will have.

I transferred 11 embryos over 5 transfertransfers before it worked out. After using menopur for 5 rounds we changed to pregervis for round 6 and quality of embryos were much better for us but that's just my case. Doc believed menopur wasn't the drug for me and was affecting the quality of my eggs

We’ve had one egg collection so far - one fresh transfer and one FET - both BFN. One frozen embryo didn’t survive the thaw. We’ve run out of NHS funding now. We’re going to transfer the last frozen one soon then we’ve decided we’ll do one more egg collection and that will be it for us. We’re not getting any younger and it’s such a traumatic process. I don’t think I’ve got it in me to do multiple egg collections.

One egg collection. A 2 year old from the 2nd FET. (1st was a chemical) . Now pregnant with our 2nd from the 6th transfer since (we had a miscarriage and 2 chemicals in betweeen). We would only use the remaining embryos from the initial collection then give up. Surrogacy is not for us.

Such a difficult, isolating journey of ups and downs and excruciating 2 week waits!

My 5th transfer was successful. I did 2 cycles with my own eggs but only got a morula first cycle and a morula and an ‘average’ blastocyst with my second cycle. As I wasn’t getting very far with my own eggs I moved to donor eggs for my 3rd cycle and got 3 top quality blastocysts out of 7 eggs. 2 transfers BFN. EMA, Alice and ERA and adjustment for my final embryo and it worked! I feel like I was prepared to do one more cycle with donor eggs if it hadn’t have worked so I felt like I had tried everything. But that was only due to being 43 now. If I was a lot younger I would have just kept going - it was only my age that was making me feel like I should stop and that was mostly comments from other people and not how I felt in myself. But it worked anyway and I’m 9 weeks :) x

Wow...it's really reassuring to read everyone's journey. We have had one egg collection so far and got 3 quality 5 day blasts (not pg tested) I found out yesterday that our last embryo was BFN so no joy from this cycle. Plan to get another egg collection in before I'm 40 in September and will transfer all that we get but I don't know if I could continue after that emotionally or financially but the longer it goes on, the more we want our little family. I can't help but worry there's something wrong, we are unexplained and I was sure at least 1 of the 3 would work. It sounds like more than 3 is common. You are all warriors!!!

Citizenerased83 in reply toAmyG18

I'm so sorry your latest transfer didn't work. It's heartbreaking. How are you doing?

Good idea about another egg collection before you're 40. My second one was a week after I turned 40. I did do pgta testing that time and I'm glad it did as it showed a chromosomal issue.

Good luck lovely.

AmyG18 profile image
AmyG18 in reply toCitizenerased83

Thank you, we have a follow up appointment booked in 3 weeks to make a plan. What chromosome issue did they find? How did that impact your treatment please? Was there anything that you could do about it? x

Citizenerased83 profile image
Citizenerased83 in reply toAmyG18

Glad you don't have to wait too long for your next appointment.I have something called a balanced translocation so can be passed onto children and cause health issues. PGT-A and PGT-SR were the best options for me so we know which embryos were definitely abnormal. However, from the normal embryos we don't know which might have normal chromosomes or might have the same balanced translocation as me. It's caused no issues to me other than difficulties conceiving. If we ever get pregnant again and the pregancy progresses we can do additional checks to see if baby is OK. X

Hi everyone

Respect to all of you ladies.. it takes nerves of steel to go through IVF !!!

We did 9 fresh IVF egg retrievals and 3 fet… so 12 transfers of 25 embryos over 11 years … 2 mcs … 1 at 6 weeks … 1 at 5.5 weeks…. 1 chemical…. we have been successful on our 4th Fresh egg collection) ie our 5th Transfer and we were successful again on our our 6th fresh egg collection .. ie 8th transfer… we have almost always transfered pgs tested embryos and it has worked two times and failed 10 times so far!!!! We have been trying since to complete our family and have done another 3 fresh egg collections we have 1 fet coming up and if it doesn’t work its the end of the road for us.. we need to move on with our lives and move on from ivf town … ! Done 1 cycle so far which resulted in 3 embryos (1 early MC, 1 chemical, 1 BFN), starting cycle 2 this month and to be honest not convinced il do a 3rd cycle, it's all consuming but I'm a bit like you - wondering when to stop or whether to keep going, this cycle might be the decider either way, starting to imagine a life without kids which I couldn't do a year ago xx

One egg retrieval at 36 resulted in 7 embryos but one didn't survive thawing. First double fet was a negative, second was a chemical and the third one resulted in a singleton live birth. Another egg retrieval at 38.5 resulted in 6 embryos and again one didn't survive thawing. Third transfer (one last embryo) resulted in a singleton live birth. From your username i gather we are the same age (41)?And you mention that you have 7 normal embryos from one egg collection? Girl, this is amazing! You got this!

Citizenerased83 profile image
Citizenerased83 in reply togianna83

Thanks so much for your message gianna83 . So pleased to hear of your success stories - 2 beautiful children. I'll be 41 at the end of the year. First egg collection we didn't pgta test embryos initially but did recently on remaining three embryos, and two were normal. Second egg collection, six embryos were normal after pgta testing. First transfer with normal embryo failed. Thank you so much, your words of encouragement have made me feel better. 😘

gianna83 profile image
gianna83 in reply toCitizenerased83

May i ask you how many eggs did you get? Sp many normal embryos at our age is very rare. I wouldn't dare think what my results would be like if i had an egg retrieval now. If i were you, i would be over the moon.

Citizenerased83 profile image
Citizenerased83 in reply togianna83

I think if I remember it was 21 eggs and then 18 embryos - 12 went for pgta testing and 6 were normal. A couple were normal from first ivf round. I'm happy with the numbers but it all depends on whether the end result is a healthy baby and so far no luck with that and I have a chromosomal issue so it makes it more complicated.
