Late period - is this normal after failed IVF didn’t get to transfer

We had our first IVF cycle in May and no eggs fertilised so we didn’t get to the egg transfer. I had a period within my usual timings about 14 days after egg retrieval but I was due to have my second period last week and am now 7 days late - am usually always quite regular cycle between 28- 30 days. I wasn’t told to expect any irregularity when we had our follow up and am concerned as want to try again with ivf in 2 months. Is this normal to have issues with cycle after failed ivf? And if you have experienced it is it usually just the second cycle or does it continue a while? Thanks!

Hi Char1t, sorry to hear about how your first cycle turned out and hoping your next produces some positive results. Things were irregular in between cycles so think it's probably quite normal. I think sometimes waiting for it to come can sort of hold it off if you know what I mean, perhaps because of stress hormones or something so try to relax/not worry (easier said than done when you're trying to schedule the next round, I know). Without wishing to be insensitive, is there a possibility this delay could require a pregnancy test just to be sure? X

Thanks for the reply and advise. I’ve done a test as requested by the hospital and it was negative as expected. We’ve just had a little holiday and I’m feeling more relaxed than I have been for a while so not sure it’s due to stress. Sounds like this is quite common so hopefully I’ll be able to get an appointment to get it sorted soon. Hope everything works out for you x

Well, I understand! I guess, yes! Due to reactional, it happens. Still, you should ask your OB regard it! I'm also undergoing IVF in August, my second attempt at a clinic in Kyiv. I had a period cycle problem in the past. So, yeah! Anyway! Keep going! Hope, that you conceive.

I did not ovulate after my failed cycle last month and now my menses is late too. Supposed to get it days ago. Now, I’m experiencing very light spotting. Hope it’ll regulate soon! This is the first time this has happened. In the past, my menses was pretty regular after a failed ivf cycle. Hope your cycle will be back to normal soon!

Hi. It sounds like we have similar timings. I also didn’t get a transfer due to no fertilisation. My second period came 7 days late (started on Friday night there) and when it came it was awful. So heavy and the cramps are awful. I kinda expected my first period to be awful but this second one is worse. I’m hoping it’s normal. We are gonna try again in sept hopefully. Thanks for the reply - it’s a comfort to hear from someone in the same position. I really hope it works for you next time. I still haven’t had period so will call hospital back next week and hopefully get an appointment to get it sorted. Good luck with it all xx

Hello, I am in the same boat. Failed at fertilization, got post op bleed 10 days later and am now on day 53 of cycle!! 25days late from a usually very regular 28 day cycle. I am going in to clinic this morning for bloods and they have said that it’s normal for this to happen sometimes due to the drugs. They’ve said they will give me a pill to start my period again. It’s so frustrating as was supposed to start second cycle as soon as bled. I hadn’t been warned this could happen and also did a couple of pregnancy tests. 😕Speak to your clinic. I’ve read some people get bloods and pill to restart AF after just a couple of weeks. Good luck with everything 🙏

Thanks for your advice. It’s so frustrating isn’t it! I’ve still got no signs of it starting - hospital said to contact them again if it hasn’t started in a few weeks and I’m going to call again next week if it isn’t here as really keen to sort it out and start ivf again end of August. I’ve done a test and negative as expected. Hope you’ve got it treated now x

Went for bloods on day 53 and the results showed I had ovulated but couldn’t say when AF would come and they were happy to start round two so currently on norethisterone to take control of AF before starting my injections next week. Anxious that I didn’t have a natural bleed but just going with what they’ve said about me ovulating and ok to go ahead! Good luck with you! Hope it shows up soon but if not know that you can still begin another cycle...

Hiya, I am in a similar situation to you. My first period after our failed ICSI in May was bang on time, arriving about a week after stopping progesterone pessaries. Thought that was a good sign that i was regulating back to normal so fast... But sadly not the same for my next period, which i am still waiting for (should have been here end of last week), although i have had some very light brown spotting but definitely not a period. All very weird!

I should think it's just that our hormones are a bit of whack what with all the ivf meds we've been putting ourselves through and hopefully AF will present herself soon (if not pregnant of course!).
