Surprising egg retrieval

Hi there, normally a silent reader but thought I would ask for peoples advice as I see how great you all are with sharing your experiences and sharing your knowledge. This morning I had my egg retrieval and very surprisingly they managed to retrieve 33 eggs. I am with the mild ivf clinic and was on 225 bemfola and triggered with 2 x ovitrelle. The doctor himself seemed very surprised as well, he wasn’t in anyway negative just surprised I think, on Mondays scan I looked like was getting 8. I’m 37 and have a good amh for my age but still my cycle was cancelled back in feb for only having what look like 3 follicles that were racing ahead. This time they put me on the pill for two weeks and increased by meds from 150 to 225 bemfola. I am very grateful that I retrieved any eggs this time but now worried myself sick about what has happened to get that many. I now have to do a freeze all as well which I accept because I am really worried about ohss. Does anyone have any experiences that they could kindly share which are similar to mine?Does this mean I have bad egg quality? I have unexplained fertility and all ok on my husbands side so far. Thanks so much for reading and I think you are all amazing. Xxxx

Congratulations thats a good amount of eggs. I think you got so much eggs because of your ohss. However, you're not going to know how good the eggs are till the sperms are added and they respond. I got 18 eggs, when sperms was added 4 did not respond at all. But all 14 made it to day 5 and they were frozen. I did pgs testing and that brought the numbers down more because although they look good and made it to day 5, some had too much or too less chromosomes. Good luck

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. Yes that makes sense! the embryologist called just there and said husbands sample was a good one so we will see what happens overnight. I completely understand a lot of those eggs today will be immature as well and not all will fertilise. We have done everything we can this side so just have to wait and see what happens next. Congratulations on your journey so far and I wish you every success going forward xx

Your welcome, the wait is one of the hards part because everytime the phone ring you are wondering if its bad news. But just hold the faith that you will get some good ones that can be frozen and go on to a health pregnancy.

Your results sound great! I had a somewhat similar experience. I'm 38 with good amh and had about 15 follicles before retrieval but they retrieved 25 eggs. 20 were mature, 19 fertilized, and 12 made it to day 5. After testing, we have 10 that are normal and frozen. I did have mild/moderate ohss after the retrieval and it was very unpleasant but resolved within about a week. And once I felt better from the ohss, I felt really liberated because after years of trying my eggs were in someone else's hands and I could drink, eat what I want, and have coffee for a few weeks before prepping for the FET. Enjoy that time between cycles! (I'm back on good behavior now and still working on the FET process. It will be my most difficult part since I had multiple miscarriages before we started down the IVF path).

The wait is hard but with your numbers I think you will end up with plenty of healthy frozen ones. Best of luck!

The 24hours after egg retrieval feels like ages! On the other hand, your journey so far was much much longer in reality..taking the meds, being scanned, thinking about follicles..too many things happening..Congratulations on getting this far...well done!

Here’s wishing you the best for the rest of the journey 👍

you are so right! I am going through every scenario in my head tonight and I have done that through this whole journey, guessing this or that and I have been proved wrong every time! I have absolutely no idea how it will go so just have to sit tight. I am so grateful to have got this far, at one point I thought it would never happen. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I feel so much less alone with you lovely lot sharing experiences or giving advice or just offering some support, it means so much xxxx

I just had a similar situation with 30 eggs retrieved and was really worried about OHSS - I know it can come on later but I’m 3 days out and I feel absolutely fine. Keeping mobile, taking it easy and drinking loads of water. Also freezing all. Take it one day at a time and try not to worry! Fingers crossed you get a good result for embryos.

Congratulations! That’s a fantastic number of eggs! 😃 I don’t think that getting a high number of eggs means they are bad quality. Hopefully you will get some lovely frozen blastocysts from this round. 🤞I’m 37 too and I got 28 eggs, 16 fertilised and 10 became day 5 blastocysts. I also had a freeze all cycle because of the possibility of OSHH. I am currently pregnant after a successful cycle. Fingers crossed you get some good news today about fertilisation, it’s all so nerve wracking! 🤞xx

Oh that’s wonderful! Huge congratulations. I love hearing such positive stories, it kept me going when I used to read them and not comment. Wish none of us had to endure this process. The embryologist called and 25 fertilised so I’m over the moon, a very long way to go but a step in the right direction. Thank you so so much for replying, so kind of you and I wish you the most enjoyable abs healthiest pregnancy xxx

I’m so glad you are feeling ok so far I really hope that continues 🙏🏼🙏🏼. I’m also terrified but hoping all the meds along with staying hydrated as possible will hopefully stop ohss rearing it’s ugly head! The embryologist just called and 25 fertilitised overnight. I am so shocked but very happy and grateful, a long way to go but at least it’s another milestone hit. Thanks so very much for responding it’s so appreciated and I wish you every success xxx

Hi, Im 39, I got a high amount of eggs in our first and second cycle but I have PCOS and I got OHSS, which can cause it. I was on meriofert and fostimon. We made it to a FET a couple of cycles later after my body had calmed down and everything had gone back to normal. We didn’t get any Frosties 1st round. We’re now on our 2nd round, our Dr switched my meds and to a lower dose too, we have been very lucky to get to our 2ww but not because of bad eggs just other factors! I got OHSS again but nowhere near as bad, our trigger injection failed so we lost all my left side follicles, they re-triggered me in theatre and we prayed I didn’t ovulate in the meantime, had a 2nd egg collection 2 days later but we got 11 eggs just from my right side. We did ICSI and got 6 embryos, 2 didn’t make it and one stopped dividing but we ended up with 3 really good 3day 9 cell embryos in the freezer! Don’t lose faith! We only had a belated FET with 2 embryos because..... I then got a cyst which they were going to drain as it was a little larger than they liked but it reduced on its own and they cancelled the procedure whilst I was in theatre! Then I got a flipping polyp next cycle, fast forward to a trip to St George’s to have it removed but the Dr did a scratch at the same time so a potential bonus and then this cycle was finally a green light, our OTD is Monday 😬😬😬🤞🤞🤞 Your clinic will adjust your meds accordingly. Good luck and wishing you the best, this cycle for us has been a rollercoaster but it really does just take one good embryo, more eggs doesn’t necessarily mean poor quality, just that your body responded too well to the Stims xx
