Unused meds

Hi all

Some of you may have read my last post where I said basically I have just found out there is a risk of Huntington’s disease in my family (a rare generic condition).

I have just started a cycle of ICSI so my fridge is stocked up with Gonal F and ovitrelle plus menopur, cyclogest and Buserelin stored appropriately, but we are now considering postponing this cycle to wait for my Dad to have results from testing.

Should he be clear, we can all breathe a sigh of relief and start our IVF. However if he does carry the condition then we are probably going to be looking at donor egg treatment.

My question really though is this, what can I do with all this medication I have just spent over £2000 on?! I assume it can’t be passed on to a potential donor but is there any way at all it could still be used??

I know we haven’t reached that point completely yet but I am a bit of a forward planner and need to understand my options!

Thanks all xx

Sorry everything is so up in the air for you.

It may be stating the obvious but have you asked your clinic about money back option? Its not like you are just changing your mind - there is a medical reason behind your decision after all.

It is frustrating these clinics give you everything up front. Mine is a not for profit so drip feed you drugs so you aren't paying for things unnecessarily. Wish more were like that.

Good luck with it all xx

Oh wow that sounds much better.

The clinic just order our drugs from an outside company and we pay them directly for all of it so I’m sure the clinic will say it’s out of their hands.

They have agreed we can postpone though so not actually paid for the treatment side yet.

Thank you for your reply though, it helps to know I’m not alone today xx

I don’t think so unless your clinic is willing to do a goodwill gesture. I don’t think pharmacies are allowed to resell dispensed medication so it’s not in their interests to buy it back and it’s illegal to sell it or pass it on yourself. Can you keep it ready for your next round hoping your dad’s results come back clear?

Yes I will keep it for now and really hope for the best. I’m just considering all options following his results. If he is found to have the gene, I’ve been told it will be around another 6 months for me to be tested and I just don’t want to postpone trying for a baby for that long again!

Bit of a mess today. Thank you for your reply though xx

I really hope your dad isn’t carrying the condition. My ex had Huntington’s in his family and whilst we weren’t together that long his mum (who had the condition) had mentioned that pgd ivf will rule it out. I guess you may not be a carrier even if your dad is?

Im sorry you are going through this though, it’s a worrying time.

I would keep your drugs for now as you have spent so much. They must have a decent shelf life on them still? Then maybe closer to their expiry of it looks like you won’t use them you could look to pass them on. But worth keeping for now until you know!xx
