Picolax and Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

I feel like I already know the answer to this but my fiance is running his first half marathon on Sunday but I have a flexible sigmoidoscopy booked on Monday morning and have to take Picolax for bowel prep. I really want be there for him finishing but I'm aware I might not be close to a toilet. Can anyone tell me their experience with Picolax and if they really had to stay near a toilet the whole day? I'll be taking my first dose at 8am and the other one at 4pm

Hi,

I've taken the bowel prep for a colonoscopy recently and I was back & forth to the toilet constantly. You'll definitely want to be in the comfort of your own home if possible x

Hi,Thanks for your response. Oh no, that's what I thought. I'll give it a miss then xx

Heh yeah I have been through this and had to be at the toilet as a matter of urgency, several times without much warning x

Oh dear. It looks like I'll be spending the day in my house then. It's such a shame but it can't be helped I guess xx

I know - the day is a washout lol as you can’t leave the house, be close to a toilet. X

Sounds like it will be a fun day. Haha. Can you remember if you took any painkillers before the procedure ? I'm a little worried about it being painful

I got sedation via IV Drip, I was awake, rambling nonsense & don’t remember a thing about the procedure. I was relaxed & it was easy as no pain.

Also had one with nothing, won’t do it again, did they tell you that you’ll have sedation?

Good luck with everything & I hope it gives you some answers x

It's really crazy because my gynecology consultant said it shouldn't be painful at all but I dont believe him. It does say in the letter that I can ask for the sedation to help with anxiety so that might be an option. I didn't know if it would help with the pain though but if its similar to yours then I might give it a shot. Thank you xx

Hello

Sadly it would be better to stay at home as you will be in the bathroom most of the time. Picolax is not a pleasant experience! Hope test goes well and results are positive

Hello, thanks for your response. That's what I thought. It doesn't sound very nice at all. I'm looking forward to it being over. I know it's worth it for the procedure. Thank you ! Xx

I'm not sure if is was picolax that I took, but I have done bowel prep before and there is no way you will be able to leave the house. It will come on suddenly and be like water. I'd also get yourself some vaseline or something similar to put on your bottom. I was going so often and wiping souch I was really sore.

Hi, thanks for responding and for the advice. I'll make sure I'm well prepared. I hope you got the results you wanted after that xx

Thank you. I had a blood test with some high cancer markers. They weren't too worried but wanted to check to make sure. It was clear. Fingers crossed you get the results you are looking for too.

I'm glad it was clear for you. They're checking to see if the endometriosis has spread into my bowel as my uterus and bowel are fused together. I'm hoping it hasn't so my surgery isn't more complicated than it already is. It will be good to get an answer so I can put my mind at rest. Thank you xx

I took picolax and it didn't hit until the 2nd dose! I was worried it wasn't going to work but suddenly comes on from no where. Also make sure you keep your fluids up, I was sick the following morning and felt awful!

Thanks for responding. It's funny that it can affect people differently. I think I'll definitely stay in just incase. I'm sorry to hear to had such a horrible experience with it. I'll make sure to take plenty of fluids. Thank you xx
