Stick with mirena or have it removed?

Hi

I have a gynae appointment coming up and I’m not sure whether to ask for the mirena to be removed or give it more time…

I’ve had it for nearly 9 months now and it’s changed my pain pattern rather than being around periods I am experiencing pain throughout the month, about 20 days a month of pain but no pattern.

I have also had continuous thrush for about a month now with various treatments which haven’t helped.

I am worried if I have it removed the pain will be worse (although at least expected around period) and may lead to the development of more endometrial tissue as I believe hormones help suppress development. I am on a waiting list for lap but a long waiting list. I can’t take oestrogen and had trouble with very low mood on progesterone only pills.

Not sure what to do so any help or advice of mirena experiences would be great thank you.

Hi 0Jasmine. Have you spoken to a gp about the thrush? I had a problem with constant thrush and was given 6 months of fluconazole (sp?) tablets, it came back a couple of weeks after that course had finished so had another six months worth and so far, no thrush. With regards to the mirena, I'm having a similar problem. Six months of almost constant bleeding or spotting and no significant reduction in pain. I've been advised by my consultant to leave it in while I wait for laparoscopy as taking it out could make symptoms worse. The pills did me no favours either. They were great at preventing pregnancy because I didn't want anyone to touch me! All jokes aside the low mood was a very serious problem for me. Sorry I haven't really given any help or advice but I'm definitely in a similar situation and wishing you all the best xx

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I hope that’s your thrush cleared up. Looking online looks like sometimes the coil can change your PH levels down there so thrush is more susceptible?

That’sa shame your not having a great time with mirena either. I have regular spotting now in replace of my period but you would think the reduction of blood would reduce pain but unfortunately not.

Do you remember what pill that was? You would think there must be a progesterone only pill that didn’t effect mood that much.

Hi Jasmine, I second poppy-b's suggestion to speak to the gp about the thrush. If you had similar problems in the past and had to take antibiotics I suggest you ask for antibiotic sensitivity testing, which will determine what will or will not work on your body. I struggled with a recurring UTI for over two years, with gps prescribing different antibiotics at will, until I finally asked for that test. Turned out several common antibiotics had no effect on me. I now carry that list everywhere!

As for the Mirena, I'm sorry you have been in pain for so long. I put in the Mirena recently and have exactly the same symptoms: pain is daily for over 20 days, in a random pattern, sometimes immediately in the morning, sometimes in the evening. I called the gp, they said it was normal for the first few months, and to take painkillers for now.

Thanks for your reply. I’m trying to weigh it all up because I don’t feel being on constant thrush treatment would be good for you. Think I might prefer it out and no thrush but more pain but it’s a hard one to call. How long have you had your coil in now? After 9 months I think this is what I would expect from the coil? X

Hi Jasmine, I'm on the Mirena for a couple of months now.

I have not experienced any thrush, but I do get a lot more vaginal discharges, thankfully the 'good' kind, I guess my body is reacting to the mirena by cleaning itself!😅 : nhs.uk/conditions/vaginal-d... However I will confirm this next week in my follow-up exam.

But... yeah, the cramps are really bad, so I have been on ibuprofen everyday. I do pilates one a week and play tennis as well, and I'm thinking of doing some acupuncture, which I hear helps too.
