Low fodmap and laxatives

Hi,

I have posted this also in the pelvic pain network but am desperate for a quick answer as my dietician hasn’t bothered getting back to me today. I hope someone can help. So at the moment I am on the reintroduction stage of the low fodmap diet . I am always constipated and unfortunately I am suffering pain at the moment which could be due to a no. Of my different issues .The only pain relief that is on offer to me that works is codeine and due to some of my conditions it’s dangerous for me to become severely constipated which is exactly what codeine does to me . So my question is can I take laxatives without compromising the diet.

I've kind of done the low fodmap diet with a dietitian (we didn't do full on elimination and reintroduction). I still follow a lot of the principles. I pretty much can't use laxatives, they all have stuff that effects my gut badly except senna so maybe try that. I used it after my surgery for codeine related constipation.

Thank you so much for your quick reply , I’m just worried that I’ve been so strict for months now i wouldn’t want to take laxatives if it’s not allowed and compromise my hard work ,it would feel like I’ve wasted all that time and I don’t know if I would start all over again.

Try natural products such as chia seeds, flax seeds, psyllium husk and prune juice. They are amazing at helping constipation.

Hi Endojaz,

Thanks for your reply x I agree with the natural root as first point of call and I take flaxseeds daily ,psyllium husk does nothing for me and I don’t think I can take prune juice on low fodmap diet 😟but when I take codeine the flax alone just isn’t enough . I called the dietician again this morning and she has advised me to take the laxatives... I’m in so Much pain but it’s not the kind I would normally take codeine for and would prefer not to take laxatives , I can’t even take a warm bath to help as my lap would still hasn’t healed and it’s to warm for hot water bottle 😟 any thoughts on alternative pain relief ?

Do you grind up the flaxseeds? I make a mixture of pumpkin, sunflower, flax golden and brown, goji berries grind up in my nutri bullet thingy add chia seeds and have about 2 tablespoons with cereal daily or in a smoothie..really helps. As for pain relief? No but I do find when I am not constipated the pain is less. Its awful living with this, I thought my probs would end after my hyst 2 yrs ago but no. Sending u a hug x

So jus got back from drs she is testing for arthritis due t family history but she said she thinks coccydinia .... I’ve looked it up and I’m positive it’s not , my Endo specialist has said muscular and nerve previously.... it was so painful and difficult getting there so I’ve now taken codeine and will Follow up with laxatives in the short run at least .

I have tried grinding them up but didn’t like the taste but anything’s worth a try so mayb ur mixture would work thanks for all ur thought x

What explanation did they give u for ur problems since hysterectomy ? that’s so tough going through all that then stil to suffer.

Well at first I paid to have a private consultation and they so say found a femoral hernia but when I went in for op they couldnt actually find one. So after lots of appts and taking a written detailed symptom list and now they are saying its endo on the bowel. Cant see anyone now until August so I am so stressed. Have complained but even the complaints dept doesnt reply so there isno hope.
