Using tampons or mooncup after lap?

Hi guys,

My lap was a week ago now and apart from being a bit sore when I over do it I’m back on my feet and back to pretty much normal (removed endo from left ovary, recto uterine pouch and unstuck my pelvis) I spotted for a couple of days after the lap but no more. I realised tonight that my last pill of the pack is tomorrow and it normally takes me 5 days after my last pill for my period/withdrawal bleed to come so my question is how long before I can use tampons or mooncup? I really hate pads as I bleed heavily and tend to leak with pads unlike tampons or mooncup.

I’m unable to take this pill pack back to back to skip my period as surgeon has told me he wants me to have period or two before my follow up appointment with him.

Hi glad youre recovering well. Im in hospital, had my lap yesterday.

Both are inserting something so not usually advised as it may all be sore and inflamed. Id suggest the cup as its not going to dry stuff out. The tampon may hurt due to the way its inserted. Perhaps just try your cup, if it hurts youll know. Hope you can use it xx

Oh how did you lap go? Diagnostic or treatment?

Yeah it does sound a better idea to use the cup just as it sits lower as well. I know it’s a tad different but doctor told me two weeks before I can have sex and by the time my period comes I’ll be maybe a day before two weeks so I may well try it and see.

Sending a speedy recovery your way! Xx

Its my second, i had my first in november to diagnose and excise any endo they found, they took biopsies, did a hysteroscopy, and unstuck my organs. I needed the second lap as doc wanted a specialist surgeon present for removing the remaining endo off rectum. Obvs didnt know that before the first op.

I got impatient re sex and waited a week! It says a week online. We just took it slow.

I get my first period in two weeks too, cups dont work with me: i have a flat pubic bone which means no matter how i put them in they move up. I shall keep trying but hate getting it out when its moved!

Yeah I know the impatient feeling I’ve been ready to jump on my other half but he’s deathly afraid of breaking me so wants to wait the full period of time.

My cup seems to rise a bit but not too bad, I don’t know if it’ll be of any help and I can’t remember the brand name but there is a product called a menstrual disc and it’s a lot flatter than a cup and I imagine it would be worn lower down, maybe look into that.

Update couldn’t help but look up the product

The information I was given when I was discharged from hospital had some guidance on when it would be ok to start using tampons — were you given anything on post-op care? The RCOG has something online as well I think.

I was given no post op care apart from telling me what they had found and telling me how to look after my dressing. Surgeon came in with his backpack ready to leave the building told me what he had found and had treated and then ran like usain bolt.

Tampons have an associated risk of tss so if theres lots of inflamed tissue it can cause infection, but that i guess is only if misused; pure cotton ones are best as they dont leave irritating fibres up there.

I may look into getting some more expensive pure cotton, unfragranced ones to try if the moon cup fails.

Hey, I definately wouldnt use tampons or mooncup this soon after your op, even though its messy I would have this period with pads only. I have heavy bleeding too and only needed pads for one of my periods, my 2nd period ended up being 11 days late so I was fine to use tampons by then. I hope you heal up ok :) xx

I must have period sixth sense, I came on late this morning and you are right at this point it is too early for me to even try tampons so that’ll be waiting for the next one. I can’t quite believe it’s early (mine take forever to come) and also how little pain I’m in, I don’t want to jinx it but I don’t think I’ve been in this little pain before and during a period for around 10 years.

When was your lap and how are you doing now? Xx

You can use a tampon or moon cup as long as you feel that they are comfortable. Good luck with your recovery. X
