Probiotics for Parkinson's disease: Current evidence and future directions 2020

So... I'm taking lactobacillus casei Shirota, which is both the probiotic used in the PD study that showed it helped with bowel movements and is also anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. It has been shown to reduce the EBV titers in your system too. If you think PD is autoimmune, this might make a difference. lactobacillus casei Shirota is sold in America and the UK under the name Yakult. It's everywhere (let me know if you need help finding it).

But that is not what this post is about. I was going to post about Yakult, but searching for references I found this: Probiotics for Parkinson's disease: Current evidence and future directions 2020 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi...

Which led me to this: core.ac.uk/download/pdf/196...

IRCT registration number: IRCT2017082434497N4

Intervention group: Probiotic capsule containing four strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus (2×109 CFU/g), Lactobacillus reuteri (2×109 CFU/g), Bifidobacterium bifidum (2×109 CFU/g) and Lactobacillus fermentum (2×109 CFU/g) (Zisttakhmir Company, Tehran, Iran) daily, for 12 weeks orally. Control group: Placebo (Barij Essence, Kashan, Iran) daily for 12 weeks orally

Conclusions: Our study evidenced that 12 weeks of probiotic consumption by individuals with PD had useful impacts on MDS-UPDRS and few metabolic profiles. Registered under ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier no. irct.ir: IRCT2017082434497N4.

Which led me to look for these four probiotics:

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus reuteri

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Lactobacillus fermentum

As an aside, I found these studies while looking for the probiotics:

Reversal in fatigued athletes of a defect in interferon γ secretion after administration of Lactobacillus acidophilus

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Antifungal effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum against different oral Candida species isolated from HIV/ AIDS patients: an in vitro study

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

Which finally got me here: Dr Matthew Best Prebiotics and Probiotics for Women, 15 Billion CFU, Probiotics for Men & Teens. Lactobacillus Rhamnosus, Plantarum, Gasseri & Reuteri. 15 Strains. Digestive, Immune System & Weight Loss Support. ($24) amazon.com/Probiotics-Lacto...

This has all four probiotics plus eleven more plus kiwi prebiotics. All of the probiotics in this are human (not soil) and it says they are colonizing.

I'm not going to stop the Yakult, but I am going to try these also. I did a month of S Boulardii, and I think you are supposed to take other probiotics when taking S Boulardii (S Boulardii kills bad bacteria but does not colonize, so you need something to fill the void) so I think I may start doing S Boulardii every third month and maybe take the Dr Matthew at the same time. Hard to say. I'd like to work it in though. I don't really want to add $24 a month onto my supplement stack, but don't really want to cut anything as I have been feeling better lately (I have not been diagnosed with PD, I have REM Sleep Behavior Disorder [and a sore shoulder that is getting better I think]).

Suggestions are always welcome.

I meant to list the ingredients:

"15 billion probiotic bacteria of 15 different clinically proven strains. Other ingredients include: Microcrystalline cellulose, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Pectin, Sodium Carbonate, Stearic Acid from palm oil, and Guar gum.

Specifically one serving (1 caplet) contains the clinically proven and patented strains:

- Probi® L. plantarum 6595

- Probi® L. rhamnosus 6594

It also contains: L. casei subsp. casei, L. reuteri, L. salivarius. B. bifidum, B. breve, B. infantis, B. lactis, B. longum, L. acidophilus, L. fermentum, L. gasseri, L. paracasei, S. thermophilus.

In addition, each caplet contains 250mg of the prebiotic Actazin. "

So much incredible research. Thank's very much.

Kashan University in Iran had a similar study for ALZ. I wish I could link it. Have you tried BioKult Mind?

Yakult has a lot of sugar.

The Dr. Matthew brand has digestive enzymes that look interesting.

By what means do you consume licorice?

For Apigenin, I have bought dried parsley in bulk and add approx 3 tablespoons to my smoothie. A company called Do Not Age.org out of the UK sells an Apigenin supplement.

What is the reasoning behind the other probiotic that kills but does not colonize?

Thank you

Biokult mind was one of the first things I tried. I don't really have an opinion on it.

Yes, Yakult is sweet. 50 calories. It's the only sugar in my diet.

I just added to my comment as you were responding. Thank you for your response.

Zagarese 100% Organic Licorice with Flip Top Box anise, 0.88 Ounce amazon.com/gp/product/B00DD...

Licorice has many pathogen fighting abilities and Quercetin too I think. I need to study up and write more on this.

in reply to Bolt_Upright

Thank you! I’m currently doing a cycle of Quercitin. I’m doing 1 gram a day for 2 weeks. I’m taking it to help clear scenescent cells. I will read up on the licorice. Going to add it to my cart.

Thank you!

I like your idea of cycles. I am trying to figure out cycles. I figure cycles are cheaper and I don't spend the day taking supplements. I did S Boulardii for a month. That was a set cycle.

Quercitin to clear scenescent cells. Interesting.

in reply to Bolt_Upright

Ficetin (might be spelling wrong) is another one. No need to take indefinitely bc presumably if they work, wait until the scenescent cells accumulate again Have you researched NMN? There are a lot of fake NMN being sold. It is similar but better than niacin. Niacin was shown in a study to help PD

Bolt_Upright in reply to

Thanks. I don't see how NMN could be better than Niacin as Niacin was what was used in the Augusta trial. Also, the theory behind that trial was lowering inflammation through Niacin binding to the GPR109a gene (I think I have that right). I think Niacin is the only B3 that does that. And bonus: Niacin is cheap.

I have added Fisetin and NMN to my todo list of things to research. Thanks.

in reply to Bolt_Upright

NMN is better. I know you will research so no sense in my elaborating. Dr. Ben Lynch discusses Niacin. If you read about the conversion process, it is helpful. NR is cheaper and a middle ground.

Than is so much for running with this, the pre and probiotics I take help me a lot with heartburn, acid reflux etc. Now I need to see if they are any of the four you listed!!

Thank you very much Bolt for this very useful post. Did you look into PS128? If so, do you have a view on that specific strain?

Same question: what about ps128.

Thanks

Hello Michel and Sid44elosam , I have read about PS128.

Keep in mind, I have a high school degree now.

I am cheap. The more expensive something is, the more I have to believe in it. I just was not convinced at $60 a month that PS128 was the answer.

I figure if PS128 IS the answer (I don't actually think there is one answer) or part of the answer, I figure the data will start pouring in and I will get on that train then.

Also, I try to think about PD from addressing the causes AND ameliorating the damage. So the things I look for are things that lower inflammation, strengthen the gut barrier, normalize the microbiome from the gut to the mouth, and fight pathogens.

That study from Iran showed improvement in UPDRS and what I have read so far about the four probiotics used align with my thoughts on what needs fixing. Fights pathogens and other things (I need to study it more). And I can get these colonizing probiotics for $24 a month.

Anyway, like I mentioned, HS grad. PS128 might be the answer (or part of the answer).

Thank you very much Bolt for a fair and balanced opinion.

Last night it occurred to me I have conflated PS128 with bacillus subtilis PXN21. I have added de-conflating these to my to-do list.

Bolt, thanks for this info. On last visit to my hubby's neurologist he had no Probiotic recommendation at all. I'll need to read all the links you provided. Appreciate this post.

There is a tremendous amount of literature supporting the B subtillus for PD Managment. Any reason you’re not adding that to your Arsenal?

LeharLover62 profile image

In November, hubby switched to Macuna and increased his b subtilis from 2 times a week alternated with other probiotics to daily. His bowel movements immediately returned to normal…no more miralax needed! I’m not sure which change did it, but it’s a «relief».
