Microplastics in Tea Bags?

What kind of IDIOT would use tea bags made with plastic? Apparently that idiot would be me!

Tea Companies whose bags DO contain plastic: ‍

Tazo

Teavanna

Tetley

Twinings

Lipton

Celestial Seasonings

Mighty Leaf Tea

I was reading a scare article in the Daily Mail about the dangers of microplastics in tea, dailymail.co.uk/femail/arti... and I got to the part that said "if you use plastic tea bags" and thought "what kind of idiot uses plastic tea bags". Then I googled "Tea Companies whose bags DO contain plastic".‍

Here is my favorite "tea". I'm sure there are other evils hiding in pretty much everything mass produced. But I really like these, and some have adaptogens too. teeccino.com/pages/faq

Same here. I had been using tea from Celestial Seasonings until I discovered this.

I use three of those brands, all the time, never had any idea. Any form of cooking with plastics, and for that matter eating food that came out of a can (because they are lined with plastic and the food goes in hot so there are huge microplastics leaching off into those hot acidic foods soups etc, just huge amounts of leaching and it's been shown that I've seen...). And there's all those foods cooked in black plastic and served in Black plastic, like grocery store deli and restaurants and fast food places... And all those home storage things that you just double as cooking vessels made with plastic and goes into the microwave that way with your food...

what about Dilmah?

I don't know. Their website's answer sounds lawyerly:

"Are your teas made with plastic materials? None of our teabags have used nylon plastics or polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET). The remainder of our tagged teabags, envelopes and inner pouch are currently transitioning to biodegradable plant based PLA material."

Mmm plant based bio plastic? Still plastic

Bolt_Upright profile image

To break what they said down:

"None of our teabags have used nylon plastics or polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET)": Okay... they have never used these two specific plastics (nylon plastics or polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET)). Are their other types of plastic they are using?

"The remainder of our tagged teabags, envelopes and inner pouch are currently transitioning to biodegradable plant based PLA material.": So... they are transitioning to biodegradable plant based material. If they ARE TRANSITIONING this means THEY HAVE NOT TRANSITIONED. If they have not transitioned to plant based biodegradable, they what are they currently using? Is it some plastic that is not nylon plastics or polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET)?

I should really credit a couple of famous politicians for educating me on how to parse what people are saying, but I won't.

I think I may also be idiotic 🤔 .maybe go back to loose leaf, if it's not too late 😑

Me awesome. Soon as I go through my 300 plus bags... You know these things are so slippery and smooth to the touch you wonder if they don't also have some Teflon type material like so much other packaging does, including me outside of most fruits packaged in cardboard...

Same with some of the herbal teas I drink. I usually put them in the compost bin 😖

I remember a long time ago, I bought my usual Lipton tea but suddenly there were nylon tea bags inside the box. They bragged about it, claiming the taste would be better.

I sent a letter to Lipton and told them I would not buy this anymore until they replaced the bags with a natural material again. It is hard to avoid plastics together with food, this is getting a problem. It is also more work for sorting out the plastic from the tea when throwing away, we usually throw our used tea in our compost.

Loose tea tastes way better

Glad I use Red Rose

Looks good!

"Does red rose tea use plastic in their tea bags?

Red Rose Tea pyramid tea bags are environmentally friendly and are made of poly-lactic acid filaments from corn starch which is suitable for various leaf teas because of its permeability."

You would be better off with loose leaf tea, because what goes into teabags is the dust swept up from the floor of the tea factory. I saw this when touring Sri Lanka many years ago.

Another major problem with tea itself is the aluminum content. Aluminum if it accumulates in the brain is neurotoxic

Pay attention to where you live, is your municipal water fluoridated, is the tea you drink also tainted with fluoride from the soil, where does it come from? You could be getting a double whammy. Ditch your toothpaste if it contains fluoride, basically a waste product from industry. Fluoride a neurotoxin has no benefits.

So... I was one of those people that ditched my fluoride toothpaste years ago and my teeth went to hell. I am scheduled for some expensive dental work in a couple of weeks.

My research shows fluoride does somehow repair small cavities and strengthen enamel. Just don't swallow it.

I'm guessing we should not need fluoride in our toothpaste and maybe would not if we were still eating a neanderthal diet.

Fortunately we have well water. People definitely should not be drinking the stuff.

In this, as in all things, I may be wrong.

I have given my tea bags the stink eye for years because they looked like plastic but surely I thought... Since it became official I have been cutting the bag open and pouring the loose tea into a stainless steel strainer before brewing. I don't know if that's any better but loose tea is hard to find in store.

bookish in reply to7springshollow

I realised about the plastic when the tea bag seam wouldn't compost. I open mine too and use a strainer, but due to reactions to the corn my current bags contain.

Yes! I avoid corn in my diet so the corn sealant is also no good for me.

For just $12,636 this company claims it can remove microplastics from the bloodstream. Or melatonin, for a bit less money, may be able to help protect the whole body based on recent animal studies as outlined in the following studies :

If it works in humans, I am a human test subject!
