Sometimes I bury the lead. I posted about probiotics 2 months ago healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

OKAY: Dr Matthew Best Prebiotics and Probiotics for Women has the 4 strains of probiotics that were used in this study that showed an improvement in UPRDS scores: Clinical and metabolic response to probiotic administration in people with Parkinson's disease: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial 2019 core.ac.uk/download/pdf/196...

The 4 strains used in the trial were Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus reuteri, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus fermentum.

Results: Compared with the placebo, consuming probiotic decreased MDS-UPDRS (−4.8 ± 12.5 vs. +3.8 ± 13.0, P = 0.01). Probiotic supplementation also reduced high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (−1.6 ± 2.5 vs. +0.1 ± 0.3 mg/L, P < 0.001) and malondialdehyde (−0.2 ± 0.3 vs. +0.1 ± 0.3 μmol/L, P = 0.006), and enhanced glutathione levels (+40.1 ± 81.5 vs. −12.1 ± 41.7 μmol/L, P = 0.03) in comparison with the placebo.

I've been reviewing all of my supplements. This one is a keeper.

I just want to point out that this paper lists one of the four strains as "Bifidobacterium bifigum". This is a spelling mistake. It is "Bifidobacterium bifidum".

I found the complete trial paper for free: Clinical and metabolic response to probiotic administration in people with Parkinson's disease: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial 2018 zisttakhmir.com/administrat...

It's a pity we can't get this particular supplement here in the UK

Hello Bolt. Thank you so much for all of the information you share. I truly appreciate it as I am trying to learn all I can to try to help my husband with PD. Did you find this particular supplement in your research or was it one used in the study? I couldn’t really tell- but wanted to give it a try. I had gotten the P128 probiotic supplements but we haven’t been disciplined about taking them consistently, so not sure if they helped. Thank you, again, for sharing your findings.

If you reach out to MBAnderson he can add you to the weekend Zoom calls (Saturday 7 PM CST, Sunday 11 AM CST).

This probiotic was not the one used in the trial. I saw the trial used these 4 strains: The 4 strains used in the trial were Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus reuteri, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus fermentum.

Then I searched for a probiotic that contained them. I was surprised to find one probiotic that contained all 4.

I reviewed the PS128. It does not look bad. Just kind of pricey: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

Thanks, Bolt! You use this over the PS128?

The PS128 is kind of pricey for me. I reviewed it here: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

You know, a light bulb just went on!

I just made some Yogurt last night (first time, not sure if it worked). I used some of my Yakult probiotic to make it.

You can make yogurt from probiotic capsules. This could bring the price way down. More research needed.

Nice thinking outside the box

I just figured out this will not work with Dr Matthews as they are coated to make it through the stomach acid. Or it might work, if you could get the count up. Probably not worth the trouble for reasonably priced ones.

Way to continue to think outside the box, though. That's exactly how breakthroughs happen

Agreed!

I have considered them. Kind of pricey for me. They look promising. I wrote about them here: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

Have you been satisfied with this probiotic?

Bolt_Upright profile image
Bolt_Upright in reply to keri10

Have I been satisfied with it? I can't say it is helping. I take a lot of supplements. I still believe in it. It is still in my stack. I don't think I am any worse than when I started taking it. I may be a little better.
