I would like to try Lactobacillus plantarum PS128, which was originally isolated from a fermented foodstuff, has been shown, in multiple experimental models, to possess the characteristics of a psychobiotic, being able to modulate dopamine and serotonin levels in the central nervous system, as well as the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines. It has also been shown to produce, in animal models, an amelioration of anxiety-like, depression-like behaviour and certain prohibitive stereotypies to improve intestinal flora?

"While PS-128 is generally regarded as safe, it may interact with certain medications, such as antibiotics and immunosuppressants. Antibiotics can reduce the efficacy of probiotics like PS-128, as they may kill both harmful and beneficial bacteria in the gut"

Hello, I’ve been getting PS128 for my Mom for the past year. While I can’t with certainty contribute current progress to PS128 but it does seem to be a factor here. We are seeing some slow down in progression of various symptoms including mobility and speech impediment. I can’t say that this is a cure and that we see radical changes for the best but a slow down in the progression of PD is still considered to be a win in my book.

As a word of caution, if you do start on it, please, monitor your potential side effects. Many users experience constipation at first but in most cases it improves within the first 2-3 weeks. It is suggested to take digestive enzyme about 30 mins prior to each meal when you start on PS128. It definitely helped my Mom.

I am not sure where you might be located but in the US, I’ve been buying from Bened life smaller distributor. It’a just slightly cheaper there. I spoke to the owner before and she is very passionate about this as her mother and aunt are both living with PD.

I have been taking PS128 for years. I can't say whether it is making a difference in my symptoms or progression. This is an excerpt from their website as to how to take it. I used to take it in the morning until I found this...

When should I take Neuralli?

We recommend people with Parkinson’s disease take two capsules at the same time, preferably in the evening on an empty stomach.

Most of us with PD eat our big protein meal later in the evening though. My empty stomach happens in the mornings and early afternoon till I start eating protein. So wonder why they say evening is empty stomach for people with PD?

Not sure, that is just what is posted on their site. I am sure they will answer if you reach out

I actually did reach out to them over a year ago and asked that question but received no response. I stopped taking it just because it was too costly

Does anyone know what the "PS128" designation means? I haven't found a product with that name in the UK. I have found Lactobacillus plantarum from Epigenetics, which I have started taking, but I have no idea whether there's a significant difference.

FWIW I haven't noticed much difference from taking it (I guess it would be more of a long-term benefit) but at least no side effects.

Thank you.

PS 128 is a strain of lactobacillus plantarum. Not all plantarum is PS 128. My husband has been on PS 128 since May/June 2021 and it has helped him tremendously pertaining to balance and spatial judgment. The facial muscles are also relaxed and normal. Also reduced internal tremor. This is one product we cannot do without.

I watched the recently posted ‘No Silver Bullet 4 PD’ video on ‘The importance of the Gut-Brain axis in Parkinson’s’ with Dr. Filipino Scheperjans, who received a lot of questions about probiotics. He would not rely on probiotics for gut health - he would rely on “a diverse healthy diet (at 1:16:30) and… related to Parkinson’s most preferably a Mediterranean or MIND type diet, and physical activity- those are the best things you can do to take care of the Microbiome”.

I tried PS 128 twice for 3 and 2 months. The only effect was that my wallet got a lot thinner.

One TBSP of coconut oil in the breakfast and one packet of HEXBIO (thanks Art) have changed hubby's life!

Hi Despe,

Thank you for the feedback! Did he also add the inulin prebiotic?

I'll clip your reply onto the original post here :

Hi, Art! Originally, we (he) started both; however, the combination caused excessive feces activity. . . 😁 so he discontinued Inulin. I found out coconut oil is an effective replacement, for both, physical and mental health.

Hi Despe,

Yes, definitely, inulin, also being fiber can have significant gastro effects. When I started it, the gas was almost as bad as resistant potato starch, but that has subsided after months of use, fortunately!
