As somebody who has been exposed to EBV (mono), I make trying to suppress EBV a leg of my supplement strategy.

I need to write up everything I think helps with EBV, but here is a short list:

- Lactobacillus Casei Shirota (Yakult): Anti-bacterial, anti-fungus, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, reduces cortisol levels. Two bottles a day.

- Broccoli Sprouts (Sulforaphane): Inhibition of Epstein-Barr virus reactivation in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells by dietary sulforaphane pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/226...

- Curcumin: Curcumin Inhibits Proliferation of Epstein–Barr Virus-Associated Human Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Cells by Inhibiting EBV Nuclear Antigen 1 Expression ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

- Berberine: Berberine in Human Oncogenic Herpesvirus Infections and Their Linked Cancers ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

- Luteolin: Luteolin inhibits Epstein-Barr virus lytic reactivation by repressing the promoter activities of immediate-early genes pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/271...

- NAC: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) ameliorates Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 induced chronic inflammation ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

- Vitamin D: Vitamin D, Epstein-Barr virus, and endogenous retroviruses in multiple sclerosis - facts and hypotheses pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/338...

I could be wrong. Just wanted to share. I will try to get a deeper dive done soon.

In Vitro Anti-Epstein Barr Virus Activity of Olea europaea L. Leaf Extracts 2021 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

"Conclusions: Olive leaf is one of the most common and traditional herbs used among Mediterranean people to cure certain diseases. Accordingly, the analysis of olive leaf extract revealed an antioxidant activity and protection against lipid peroxidation. In addition, the leaves of Oleo europaea cultivated from Sfax showed an antiviral effect against the EBV lytic cycle induction. Oxidative stress during viral replication can play a key role in the development and progression of diseases. Thus, we can conclude that OESA might be used as a natural supplement to fight the oxidative stress and as an adjuvant therapeutic remedy against viral infections."

"Antiviral Effect of Oleuropein: Oleuropein exhibits antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects. Oleuropein is patented for antiviral activity against various viral diseases, such as herpes mononucleosis, hepatitis virus, rotavirus, bovine rhinovirus, canine parvovirus, and feline leukemia virus, in the United States.89 Oleuropein also exhibits antiviral activity against parainfluenza type 3 virus and respiratory syncytial virus.90 Little is known about the antiviral effect of oleuropein against HBV, but Zhao and coworkers91 recently investigated the effect of oleuropein on HBV replication in the HepG2.2.15 cell line in vitro and duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) replication in ducklings in vivo. Oleuropein significantly inhibited HBsAg secretion in HepG2.2.15 cells in a dose-dependent manner and reduced viremia in DHBV-infected ducks. This study was the first report of the mechanisms of oleuropein suppression of HBV replication and the anti-HBV activity of oleuropein in vitro and in vivo. Further investigation of the antiviral mechanism is needed."

EBV and Olive Leaf Extract - Dr. Kasia Kines, DCN MS MA CN CNS

March 30, 2018

"From my book The Epstein-Barr Virus Solution:

Olive Leaf has a tremendous reputation for health, especially due to its phenolic compounds like oleuropein, with research confirming its antimicrobial (both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria and mycoplasma), antiviral, antioxidant and even anti-cancer properties (Omar, 2010). The antiviral qualities include mononucleosis but also a host of other viruses: hepatitis virus, rotavirus, bovine rhinovirus, canine parvovirus, and feline leukemia virus, quite an impressive list (Fredrickson, 2000). Olive Leaf extract is readily available in supplements and has a great reputation among functional clinicians for its antimicrobial activity. It could be particularly beneficial if we are dealing with bacterial confections.""

Posted on June 29, 2021 at 12:59 PM by Andrea Van Meer: I’ve had EBV for 4 years now and it goes in and out of dormancy a couple times a year. I just ordered your book and have a question. You suggest using olive leaf but I’ve read that it shouldn’t be used if you have autoimmune disorders because it stimulates the immune system. I’ve heard great things about olive leaf & would love to try it but I have a couple autoimmune disorders. What are your thoughts?

Posted on June 29, 2021 at 5:36 PM by Kasia Kines: We love OLE for co-infections – it has a broad spectrum antimicrobial capacity, including candida – but it also kills the good bacteria, so we only recommend it for 30-60 days and along with probiotics, away from the OLE.

More searches did not show Oleuropein to be bad for autoimmune disease. At least nothing I could find.

Biological activities of the natural antioxidant oleuropein: Exceeding the expectation – A mini-review 2015 sciencedirect.com/science/a...

"Conclusions: In this mini-review we summarized and discussed the current knowledge regarding the chemistry, biosynthesis and bioactivities of the natural antioxidant oleuropein, a biophenol usually found in olive leaves and fruits as well as in some Oleaceae species. Increasing lines of evidence as highlighted in the current mini-review have established a scientific basis to the use of oleuropein-rich extracts as functional food. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of oleuropein and its ability to treat oxidant and inflammatory-related diseases (i.e. cancer, cardiovascular disease, hepatic disorder, obesity, diabetes etc.) are the main biological activities demonstrated. Owing to its significant functionality, the incorporation of oleuropein and/or oleuropein-rich extracts into food-based products is likely to be a promising practice for development of functional foods and nutraceuticals. However, such assumption requires scientifically proven data, and additional in vivo and eventually clinical trials are urgently needed. In addition, more stringent studies focusing on the mechanism of action, efficacy and safety are also required."

You are too kind Gio.

May I ask what brand, and dose, of oleuropein you are using? Do you take breaks?

It seems like a good and affordable product.

you can try opening a capsule and taste it, usually it is very very very bitter, so much so that you can't keep it in your mouth. The more bitter it is, the better quality it is. even a little spicy.

Wonderful and helpful thank you! I apologies for “jumping” on to one specific.

Broccoli sprouts - sulforaphane - yes absolutely amazing for lots!

This lady has a great video about how to significantly increase the amount of sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts by putting them in hot water for a time.

I admit it doesn’t help the flavour or texture I’m afraid but hey needs must and all that.

Thanks again

Scroll quite far down for the how to video:

PS. For anyone hesitant broccoli sprouts really are super easy to ‘grow’, trust me I’m not green fingered.

They say the best exercise is an exercise you will do. I will not consistently heat my sprouts with precision.

I do know another way to double the sulforaphane content in broccoli sprouts: Eat twice as much sprouts. I eat about a cup and a half every morning.

Here is my blog page on all I know about broccoli sprouts and sprouting: rbd-pd-protocols.blogspot.c...

Very helpful, thank you. I was diagnosed a few months ago with lab testing. I don't understand, though, what the symptoms are and how I tell if I have a current active virus-- or if it has become dormant. My doctor was not clear about this and frankly did not give me much useful information in the way of treatment.

Bolt_Upright profile image
Bolt_Upright in reply to jennrich

Diagnosed with EBV?

jennrich profile image
jennrich

Yes. Sorry that wasn't clear.

Bolt_Upright profile image
Bolt_Upright in reply to jennrich

I was just being cautious. Let me start by saying researchers say that up to 95% of the world population has been exposed to EBV. A lot of doctors believe it is no big deal. It may raise risk factors, but it is not any guarantee that bad things are going to happen.

The symptoms of an initial infection can be very clear. Fever, swollen glands (they call it glandular fever in England). Initial infection can also be milder, like a one day fever.

Assuming you are over 50 it is not likely you caught it recently (although my mother did catch it late in life. I think they were sharing the communion chalice at church.

Did you get a blood test that tested for a lot of things and ebv showed up? They say up to 95% of the population has been exposed. If it showed up on a test, I think it would have a titer number would give an indication of how much your body is fighting the virus.

So if you test positive for EBV it likely just means that at some point in your life you were exposed to it. Once you have it you will always have it. It is a retrovirus.

The doctors don't recommend a treatment because they don't know what to do about it. Many doctors don't think it is a problem. Other doctors think it my be a problem if the virus starts replicating due to stress or disease. So there are some doctors that think EBV reactivates and causes trouble, but they don't agree on what to do and there seems to be no official strategy except to eat well, reduce stress, and get enough sleep.

Then you have the EBV doctors on the internet that suggest lifestyles or supplements.

Sorry if this was a long comment without offering much help. For me, I just read a lot and Google various supplements plus EBV and try to find things that lower the EBV titers. That seems like the best strategy to my high school educated brain.

jennrich profile image
jennrich in reply to Bolt_Upright

Thank you! Pretty much same info I got from my doctor. Maybe more! The number on my lab test was "off the charts" high which is indicative of an active virus.

Bolt_Upright profile image
Bolt_Upright in reply to jennrich

I don't think that necessarily means the virus is active. I think it may mean your body is hyper vigilant to the virus and then may be prone to attack other things. But maybe the virus is going in and out of activity. I think that happens.

Well you have my list of supplements that should address this (based on my HS degree), I have faith in it. And Gioc added the Olive Leaf Extract, which we sourced pretty cheap above. I am not jumping on Olive Leaf Extract yet myself. I just think my list is long enough and I seem to be ever so gradually getting better. I have not been diagnosed with PD, I have RBD and had some PD symptoms which are slowly fading.

Good luck and reach out any time.
