I hardly dare write this, it seems like tempting the running gods and goddesses, but here I am again, after injury and illness and more injury and illness.
On my last attempt I got to week 7 before my foot had an argument with the leg of the bed and lost. This was the same leg that I fractured the ankle on in 2020, and the ligaments are feeling a bit battered again, but hey-ho. Doctors told me I can carry on as soon as I like. But then as I was recovering from that I caught a suspiciously covid-like bug, although the test was negative. Knocked me flat for several more weeks.
So I've started again (again, again....) nice and easy, very slow, and I'm on week 2. I'm repeating it before moving on to week 3, and I've called my old running buddy who is delighted to come back out with me. So a cautious hello and nice to be back but keeping fingers firmly crossed!
(And avoiding aggressive-looking furniture...)

Well done on your dogged determination, and yes you are right, keep away from aggressive furniture, will be looking forward to watching your progress ๐ค, and you are sensible to repeat runs as needed, it took me 18 weeks to complete ( 4 years if you count my first start) so I'm pretty sure you can beat me.Take it carefully ๐๐ค
You are amazing! Well done for restarting again! I think your name should be determinedoldgirl because you have masses of determination. Keep going you will get there.
Good luck and keep us posted please๐๐๐๐๐๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐ฅฐ
As someone who has restarted probably as many times I know exactly what that feels like... but yet we keep coming back.. keep at your pace and hopefully you can avoid anything trying to literally and figuratively trip you up! Fingers are crossed ๐ค
well done on getting back there. Iโm exactly the same and itโs taken me at least two years of colds, colds, holidays and indeed every excuse under the sun to finally start back at Week 1.
Have you thought of strength work and Pilates? Both will help to strengthen around the ankle (and everything else) I have found kettlebells to be the least scary form of strength work. I started with the local leisure centre, but have found a local Strongfirst instructor. There is a list on the Strongfirst website โบ๏ธ
Thank you so much for this, I already do pilates and rely on it to keep me going really - but I've been wondering what I can do specifically for ankle strengthening, I'll look into kettlebells and strongfirst.
BTW I know how tough it is to be injured. Recently found out I have a hip impingement (basically the ball of my right hip joint is misshapen) Never in a million years did I imagine how not running would affect me mentally. It has been tough. Iโm on rehab exercises with light walking and 15 min Pilates here and there. I have found a physio who specialises in running injuries (the 2nd physio I have tried) He is a runner and when I told him how I was feeling, he completely โgotโ it. I am lucky enough to be able to afford to pay for the time being (instead of a birthday present for my big birthday with a nought in it!) I figured I would rather invest in my health, mental and physical and โfuture proofโ myself as much as I can (my Mum has severe osteoporosis, Dad died of bowel cancer). I hope to restart c25k again soon. I have realised that any running will be a godsend for me. Just being outside, feeling the air around me. Walking for me isnโt the same. Just realised I have probably overshared here ๐
Totally with you on the mental thing. When I broke my ankle I knew I'd be out of action for a while but got good NHS physio who insisted I would be back out running if she had anything to do with it. So I felt positive the whole time and I could work towards getting fit again. When I damaged the foot again this year it took a while to convince GP to investigate - at first he seemed to think that because I could still hobble about that was good enough for someone my age. I was quite upset that he really didn't "get" that I wanted to be back running.
I'm also trying to keep mobile, I have arthritis in my hands, it was spotted on an x-ray in my foot but it isn't affecting it yet. And I had osteopenia in my hip which has gone since I started running so I'm cheering you on๐๐
I am in about the same condition. Ran in Greece but on getting home the weather got to me. Then we had a weeks walking in Norfolk and on th e way home called in at Manchester to kids sit. 2 weeks ago. Sure I had covid and I have no desire to stick the running shoes back on. Looks like I will be resuming C25K for the 4th time to get fit again. So look after yourself Old Girl and get better soon
Iโve also been back to the beginning after first completing in summer/autumn 2020. Iโve taken it slowly and have only just completed my 30 minute runs after starting week 1 in early April. Iโve found it harder to fit in 3 runs some weeks due to work and social life. Iโve not beaten myself up. Iโve also paused for quite a while running at 25 mins as that was easier to achieve in the time available. I E just had a different mindset. Itโs been about doing exercise and enjoying it. No beating myself up. Hope you find your route through too. ๐
Oh dear GOG, youโve had it all thrown at you havenโt you? But Iโm glad to hear youโre able to get back out there again and good luck with the plan again (again, again!). ๐๐
Whoopee! So pleased to read this and how lovely to be joined by your running buddy. Here's to steady progress while avoiding arguments with furniture and random bugs. ๐๐๐ปโโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐๐
It's slow progress - in fact no progress, I'm doing about 2 runs a week but I've dropped back to week 3 after hitting the giddy heights of week 4! My running buddy fell and hurt her ankle (yes we are cursed ๐ป๐ป) and I am still getting bouts of fatigue so we are taking it veeeerrrryyy sloooooowwwlyyy!
