Hip issues, ( I am 50)

My last (big) run was on 4th October- I completed week 5 run 3, but had horrendous issues with my right hip following this (I'm 50). I have been so stiff and sore, have struggled to get in and out of the car and have woken at night with pain in my hip on the outside but also in the groin and hip bone near waist.

I attempted week six run 1, but pain in my hip continued so I had to admit defeat and put the rest of the plan on hold.

I am hoping to get an x ray to rule bone problems out and have had one session with an ostepath (who thinks it may be a back issue as i am very stiff in sacroiliac area) and muscular isdues around hip, and possibly piriformis, although I dont get sciatica.

Although I am not in as much pain now- more discomfort, but it has taken almost 4 weeks to feel I am returning to normal.

I am scared to restart the plan- but devastated as i loved it so much.

I have not done any other exercise since I stopped and feel old and stiff and awful. I was taking a lot of ibuprofen to deal with pain but I have stopped now as i want to monitor the pain and feel it on a day to day basis.

I am back at the osteopath on Friday morning- she sees no reason why i will not be able to continue but said a treadmill may be a better option, to cushion my stride -I often feel the camber of the pavement affects my hips. ( I am also 2-3 stone overweight, menopausal and have been unable to lose anything other than a few pounds over the last few years).

Can anyone offer any hope/ advice?

Has anyone had similar issues and managed to complete the plan?

Thanks for sticking with the long post x

It will get better. I was 3 years off work with back problems and a dysfunctional si joint. Swimming initially help me. Not only is it good exercise, I also found I could relax, which in itself lessens pain. Now I'm running 30 minutes, without pain. It will improve, just be patient and be kind to yourself.

Loads of people discover long standing issues when they start stressing their bodies by running and in most cases these can be addressed and running can be safely resumed.

The guide to the plan has advice on minimising impact including making sure that you are wearing appropriate shoes, preferably fitted after a gait analysis done at a specialist running shop, which can make all the difference.

You are doing the right thing by getting treatment from a medical professional and hopefully you will be back out soon.

Check with your osteopath, but there are plenty of back strengthening exercises available which will hold you in good stead when you restart....... .. runners need good core strength.
