Aching hip

Hi,

I haven't posted before but enjoy reading all the other posts for motivation 😊

I have tried to run in the past but gave up very quickly because my hip always hurt after! I decided to give it another go with c25k. I have got to W4R2 but I am having to rest for more than a day in between runs as my hip is very stiff after, especially now I am running for longer. I have bought proper running shoes (after gait analysis) and i'm stretching before and after. I'm also doing yoga sessions in between. So my question is do I keep going? Will my hip ever get used to it?

I really want to keep going - as well as getting me fitter, running is much easier to juggle around family commitments than doing exercise classes! But I don't want to injure myself either. Advice please!!

Go and see a physio. They should be able to tell you why it is so stiff and probably also what you can do to stop it happening.

It might not be your hips. Tight hamstrings or ITB (Google for exact location but it's generally the outside of your leg from your hip to knee) can cause sore hips or it might even be coming from your lower back. Search for specific exercises to stretch these areas and don't stretch before a run, always afterwards and several times throughout every day. If tightness is the issue (and you'll soon know 😩 ) then invest in a foam roller breakingmuscle.com/fitness/...

Also have a chat with your yoga teacher. She/he might have some ideas too. I know my Pilates teacher is brilliant at explaining why I have various aches!

Don't worry about taking extra rest days but obviously you need to get this sorted. If all else fails then maybe a trip to a sports physio will be wise to get a proper diagnosis.

Please keep us updated and I hope you get it fixed soon. And a big well done for getting this far and for posting πŸ™‚

Thanks for your advice a few weeks back. I have since visited the physio and she confirmed that there is nothing wrong with my hips - they move freely and it is indeed the muscles in my thigh that were really tight! After two appointments and regular stretches my hip feels so much better during and after running ... and I actually ran for 20 mins yesterday :)

Thanks for the advice 😊 I will keep going but with more rest days in between and get myself to a physio too!
