Graduation run 4

Decided to splash out on a forerunner 45+. No regrets - really interesting insights esp. HR & zones. Tried to keep myself in zone 2 today - very difficult - as a 61 year old the upper range of zone 2 is 111 bpm. Also trying to increase cadence from a natural 150ish so ran to a 160 beat - felt I was barely moving but I could have held a conversation the whole way round (which is not usually the case). I’m hoping it will increase my aerobic capacity (at least that‘s the theory!)

Not sure what's going on there as at 160spm cadence I'm moving pretty rapidly and certainly not in zone 2??🏃

I think it was because I was trying both to increase my cadence and keep my heart rate down at the same time so was taking shorter strides to “slow down”.

Did another run today aiming to keep my HR down to 120 (which is 75% of my “max” HR and it seemed to go better though still had to walk when at 130 and started again when 115.

To decrease your heart rate just decrease your cadence.... 👍

I think the answer is that I can’t work on my cadence until my basic speed improves - I’m too slow to start this yet and just need to concentrate on running in the aerobic zone.

Just out of interest, how is it different to other devices that are worn on the wrist?. My fitbit versa seems inaccurate for heart rate during runs. Does anyone know?

I’m afraid that I don’t know of any comparisons. I think the gold standard for heart comes from a chest belt - it would be interesting to do a comparison with that !
