Stress fracture

I’ve loved the c25k programme and have continued to run 3 Times a week since graduating. However I suffered a sharp unexplained pain in the fibula just above my ankle bone on the outside of my left leg halfway through a run. I couldn’t run for much longer and walked home. I assumed I’d got a sprain and followed the ‘rice’ regime. I had an xray 10 days later and it didn’t show anything and a subsequent MRI which show the fracture which runs up the bone. I’m now awaiting a fracture clinic appointment. Just thought I’d post how it felt as it occurred- I continued to work for 2 weeks after and the pain steadily increased. I will be back running!!

Oh dear! Take the advice of the doctor. Perhaps you could consult a physio for good advice on strengthening etc. Take care.

Thank you, it was a sports physio that diagnosed the problem, and sent me for the MRI, I do intend going back to him once it’s healed, I do envy you all running - even on a rainy morning! 🥴

A warning to us all to try to minimise impact and build up slowly.........our bodies break.

I hope your recovery period is not too prolonged.

Take care.

Absolutely, and I didn’t think it could be a stress fracture at first, as I ran on soft ground for half of my regular route, and didn’t often get to 5k in my 30mins (unless I was being a gazelle that’s day!) thank you, I’m trying to be patient, it was showing some healing so I know it’s on the mend 👍.

Counter-intuitively soft ground can sometimes cause more impact stress than harder ground. You naturally shift your gait to reduce the stress when you can feel it. Soft surfaces or cushioning reduce the "jolt" but the stress forces are still there.

Oh I didn’t know that, that’s v interesting. I’m going back to the physio once it feels ‘better’ to get advice on returning. I miss it so much.
