Hi all

Well tomorrow sees my last run of week 4 (I know miracles do happen🤣) and i am starting to enjoy running! I find i have to pick long suffering hubby off the floor every time I say it.

i am now thinking of investing a smart new pair of running shoes (promise i will post a pic and heads up if i have my way they will make a statement).

Alas I have also been told i need to buy running socks. Thats a new one on me. I thought a sock was a sock. How wrong I was

Any advice from the collective font of knowledge? 😜

Yeah running socks do help your feet, with extra padding on heel etc....I got mine from Sports Direct.....money no object 😜

Got mine of the web M&M sports. They are amazing wouldn’t be without them now 👍🏻

Well, who knew??

Is there any end of things we can buy to run in/with?! Woooww!!

Maddee_6333 profile image
Maddee_6333Graduate in reply toPlattszo

There’s SO much stuff to run in/with, seamless underwear, and seamless socks are worth the investment.

That said, you do t have to spend a fortune on them if you are somewhere that there’s a Decathlon.

After the right shoe... the right sock makes the next biggest difference to the running. I’m not as rich as Couchphoenix , so my socks come from Decathlon and Aldi 🤣. There are expensive brands available too I hear!

liam-1 profile image
liam-1Graduate in reply toUnfitNoMore

Doesn’t matter how much you spend as long as your comfy then your set up is working.

I have some shorts and base layer tops from Decathlon and I’m very impressed with the equipment.

Look at us all, how great is it that a pair of socks can bring even more of us together. Love the conversations 🦶👍🏻

I was a big Nike fan boy when I arrived here... decathlon are pretty similar quality in my experience, and I can buy 5 at a time instead of one 🤣

My Aldi running socks are amazing, just wish I'd bought more than 1 pair when I got them a couple of years ago!

I forget to keep looking at their specials for the running week... I think it was about this time two years ago when I got socks, knee ankle and back braces and a couple of tops.

Ok more homework/shopping haha. I am determined to do this and any advantage has to be taken 🤔

You will notice the difference.

When my partner mentioned to me she had brought me a pair I was a little narrow minded thinking ‘yeah like they make a difference’ 🤔. How wrong I was they are amazing and I wouldn’t run without them now

Try Aldi and the other one similar that's where I got mine. They're great, and were only about 2.50

I’ve just searched for running socks and found some called finger socks, with individual toe sections. To be honest they were quite disturbing. It would add at least 30 mins to my runs trying to match my toes up with the toe slots🤣

Smile23 profile image
Smile23Graduate in reply toLA13

Think my stumpy toes would struggle with those🤣

Tinytears60 profile image
Tinytears60Graduate in reply toLA13

Hilarious!... I'm howling reading this!!.... WHAT is even more disturbing is that there are actual running shoes the same.. which is probably why those socks exist!... Freaked me right out!.....

I'm with you - would take me an hour to get into them! hahaha!

Tinytears60 profile image
Tinytears60Graduate in reply toLA13

Seriously!.. I'm howling here!.. Gonna wake the house up laughing! :-)

they are horrific!... I'm not sure i would even be able to get those shoes on!....

Smile23 profile image
Smile23Graduate in reply toTinytears60

They remind me bizarrely of those stripy kids gloves which were held together with wool which was fed through our coats when we were kids. Maybe its just how my weird mind works😜

Tinytears60 profile image
Tinytears60Graduate in reply toSmile23

NO! THAT is so true!... i can picture it now!... OMG such fun! :-) The shoes look really freaky!.... I think its meant to feel like running barefoot ...but not sure i would like to feel that ...

Hey everyone check my profile out, I have posted a picture of mine and I did mention earlier they are from M&M sports wear online.

So comfy, great breathable material and honestly make a huge difference

Hi there. Look at socks on Wiggle. I just invested in new socks and trainers and it has made huge difference. Good luck and enjoy.

BePatient profile image

I just bought new trainers and socks that are eco friendly and very comfortable. Company is All Birds. The shoes are called Dashers and the socks are Trino™ Sprinters.

I don’t do socks, not unless I’m in a pair of hiking boots or my winter fluffies so have no idea of their magical running properties, but My Adidas adiboost? Trainers have this glove around the foot type fitting so perhaps that’s why I don’t need the socks? But I didn’t wear them with my gel kayano either many moons ago! What exactly do they do then? Oh I did get a nice pair with Compression around the middle of the foot once from Lidl middle aisle which felt nice and tight? Anyway Yey for week 4 and glad to see you’re enjoying the running xx

Hedgehogs123 profile image
Hedgehogs123Graduate in reply to

Hiya, I bought some bright pink compression socks from there and swear by them. They are long ones and support my calves. I used to teach fitness classes and did have a few muscle tears, the compression socks support me when I'm running. Wouldn't be without them!

in reply toHedgehogs123

So do they do anything for flat feet? I’m a massive over pronator and get weird ankle and underfoot feelings most of the time when running?

Hmm not sure, probably not.

There were some on Amazon which were supposed to be pretty good, about £16 a pair though. One sec and I'll check what they were called.

They are called Rockay, the reviews seem pretty good.

Weirdly that make has just appeared in an ad on my Facebook!

Well done you for getting this far. I use M&S blister free socks. They have a double layer and are so comfy and not expensive. Good luck

I use those socks too. Really good.

Hedgehogs123 profile image

Are they only ankle ones? I need long ones to support my calves.

Maddee_6333 profile image

You can get separate calf sleeves for that 👍

Absolutely not a runner, can walk miles but the old pelvic floor won't let me run. That said comfortable feet are very important. Good well fitting shoes, go and be fitted at a good sports shop. I buy great padded socks from Primark and Aldi so no need to spend a fortune. Shoes however, are different, but cheap ones and you won't wear them, good ones are an investment.

Natsuwa profile image

Yep I bought running socks from M&S and I love them, they also have L & R on each sock. You most certainly feel the difference if you wear a non running sock. 🧦🧦🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

I bought running socks from Tesco but they are much too hot! They are comfortable to wear so will keep them for the winter. Need some lightweight ones that don't move around when I run as previous ones did ( and is very distracting ). For the time being I am running in normal women's ankle socks and they're perfectly fine but "breathable" ones might be better?

Overweightandunfit profile image
OverweightandunfitGraduate

I just have men’s sports trainer socks from Tesco, I have wide(ish) feet so men’s fit me better. Mind you I also just wear my normal Skechers trainers and haven’t had any problems yet - am I just a cheapskate?😂😂

Running21a profile image
Running21a in reply toOverweightandunfit

😂I am exactly the same as you!! Wide feet with normal trainer socks and normal sketchers trainers!!! I am going out this week to buy some proper running trainers and while I’m out I’ll also invest in some runners socks going by all of the comments they’re worth buying! You never know one day I might actually be a proper runner!!! 🤣🤣

Fitzy110 profile image

I have worn ones from Runderwear for a while now, they are more expensive, but they have regular sales, so I only buy them when on offer.

I find them to be very comfortable and thickly padded, they have also lasted very well.

shsoga profile image

Thorlo 84N. Sooooo soft and padded, only things that save my ultra-weird feet from getting shredded! Marketed as “socks for people whose feet hurt“ which is why I first bought them, wouldn’t be without them now

Cleeve81 profile image

Injinji toe socks are my favourite as my toes rub each other! Saves on taping up the toes

Ethelbert profile image

I use More Miles (got from Amazon) and they made a huge difference. One thing I noticed was that the size choice was 3-5 or 6-8 instead of the more usual 4-7 for normal women's socks. I'm a 5 so went for the smaller size and they fit perfectly. I'm sure the lack of spare room in them has helped enormously, as I have the kind of feet which blister if you look at them!

Smile23 profile image
Smile23Graduate in reply toEthelbert

Fab. I have orders some the sizing won me over i have pixie feet so the 3-5 won over everything 😁

Dont have special socks but when I first ran in my special runners trainers I loved it. Felt so different. Feet supported and cushioned just like they promised in the blurb. I would definitely encourage anyone who is even vaguely serious to get proper shoes. I got mine from sports shoes.com courtesy of great advice from this forum after doing the wet foot test. Now thinking of getting special socks after reading this thread:

Are they all the same or is there a wet foot test equivalent for socks?

Thanks all and good luck with all your next runs. 😀

booksie profile image
booksieGraduate in reply toGrannyasbo

Just tuned into this Grannyasbo. What is the wet feet test? Also what brand of shoes did you buy? I completed the programme the other day and have been running in a pair of Clarks sports shoes! I didn't want to change them in case it interupted my flow ( and they're really comfortable anyway ) but now the time has come to buy proper running shoes.

jimytwo2 profile image

Shoe wise I opted for ASICS gel contend 55 which are great cushioned beginners running shoes but I can’t wear short sports socks with them or they rub at the back . So I just wear normal Asda socks or whatever . I don’t think you need special socks

Ellaloux profile image
EllalouxGraduate

The best ones I have are from decathlon, I think the brand is Kalenji. They’re brilliant!! I suffer horrendously with blisters and these socks actually prevent me from getting them! They never fall/slip down either😊

TallTeal2020 profile image

I got roped into buying the VERY expensive ones from the running shop, which are good but too thick for summer running.

Got pink karrimor ones from Amazon which are also good but my favourites are my knee length compression ones which I wear all the time just now and even in the heat they weirdly keep my feet cool and my niggly ankle good with less padding?!

Anyway, good luck with week 5 - that was my favourite week 😁

I wear Nike dri-fit cushioned socks. Super comfy and obviously add a cushion to support your feet. My feet are never sore or achy after a run

I love Hillys socks...no inner seam...double layer...elastic in just the right places and they stay up. Yeah. They are pretty too. They make me smile. Happy running 👣👀👍

For a really short period of time in high school I was into only wearing clothes that were "natural" i.e. cotton, hemp, wool etc., I quickly learned that cotton socks will give you blisters! Right now I like wearing running socks by Injinji company because they have separate toes and that helps me with my bunion. You might also look for socks with padding in strategic areas as you run longer and longer distances and/or compression socks if you run distances. But if you are not running very long distances then go with whatever feels best to you :)

I dont wear running socks, but do wear merino wool hike socks, yes even in the exceptionally warm weather!

Think I must be strange as I hate running in socks that’s why I love brooks levitate trainers as I don’t have to wear socks with them and they wash really well. Happy running 🏃‍♀️
