Did I cheat week 5 run 3

I have done the same route all the way up to now but today the 20 min run made me nervous....... I chose a flatter route and managed it. Mostly thanks to some very slow jogging. I am an obese 56 year old male. My heart rate was just over 150 for most of the jogging part, is that what the experts among you would expect it to be ?

No you are not cheating by choosing a more level route for this run.

By listening to your own body and acknowledging your capabilities, you are making sensible decisions and adaptations that allow you to achieve and progress, which is all part of becoming a runner. All runners, newbies and experienced, do this and you should definitely not feel guilty - more the opposite.

As for heart rate, I'm not a medical expert and it is not possible to make comparisons between runners as personal metabolisms are all different. As a guide though the following information is really useful....

The American Heart Association (AHA) advise that people aim to reach between 50% and 85% of their maximum heart rate during exercise. According to their calculations, maximum heart rate is around 220 beats per minute (bpm) minus the person's age.

Hope that helps.

You are making great progress and everything you are doing is going to increase your fitness levels and make you more healthy. Keep up the good work and happy running. 😊

Well done.

That is not cheating, it is good run planning.

Heart rates are very individual and vary over quite a range, so unless you are willing to do a lot of very serious research, I would not get too hung up on it.If you feel fine then you probably are and over time you may see that coming down when jigging at the same pace.

That is really good still. 20 minutes jogging is just enough. Keep going.x

If you ran 20 minutes you certainly didn’t cheat, well done

The flatter the route the better, we obly really started mixing in hills once we had graduated and then walked most of them
