I think we’re all aware of the impending storm due to hit us in the early hours of tomorrow morning. My next run was scheduled for tomorrow, so I checked the forecast online, and as much as I don’t mind rain running, 60-80mph gale force winds are not my cup of tea. According to the BBC weather app the strong winds are likely to last till at least Tuesday evening - not sure I believe it, but you have to base a decision on something!
So I decided to do tomorrow’s run a day early and off I trotted. It was better than the last one which I found tough - I was less achy before I started, and did some deep breathing during the warm up walk to try to get some more oxygen into my system (to fend off the toxic ten). This seemed to work as I fell into a nice (slow) pace at about 7 mins into the run.
I used the podcast for a change and at 14 mins up piped Laura to say I was half way through, and I could change my pace if I fancied - no chance of that happening on this first run, unless I slowed down which would be nigh on impossible 🐌
Anyway first one down and two to go for this week 👍😁
Now a question: When do you start your tracking device? I’ve always started it at the beginning of the walk, and switch off at the end of the cool down, so I’m tracking a walk/run. Now I’m more interested in my run only so I might change.....
Happy running folks 😁

Well done for getting out a day early. I did parkrun this morning and due to run Monday evening.... and don't really have any other options this week 😬 looking forward to running into the wind 😂
As for tracking devices, I start and stop mine and beginning and end of the run, I like to know just what the run part is
Wow! You're keen. I'm off to France tomorrow so am going to see what it's like for Monday. Ran yesterday so figured that would be about right for me. Like you I became more interested in how far I was actually running so started my Strava when Michael Johnson said 'Run' and then when he said it was my last minute I'd pull my phone out from my Fitbelt and get ready to switch Strava off. It's a bit of a palaver but that's the way of it. If you've got all the apps going it's a bit of a juggling act. Strava first, Michael second and then my music/podcast - I like juggling 😄
Well as I’m normally taking 2 days rest at the mo it gave me the option thankfully, and I’m now glad I’ve done it, and with no ill affects 🤞🏼I’m going to just track the run part from now on, fortunately I have Strava on my watch so don’t have to juggle 🤹🏼♀️
Ooh! All this talk of watches makes me envious. I only have a Fitbit - bought it purely for my steps but now I'm beginning to wish I had something else. I can't even see the display when it's sunny! What have you got?
I had a Fitbit Charge 3, but Santa bought me a Samsung Active which is fab. I wanted something that looked like a nice watch, and it’s not huge like a lot of them.
I remember a run where one of the big storms hit town and l got drenched to the core. I was so wet that l didn't mind being extra covered by passing cars and buses splashing through big puddles. The only thing is, you need to watch the temperature if running in such conditions as freezing rain can seriously hurt you. Also, if extremely windy you don't want to be levelled by a falling tree either. As for the tracker, given that I'm not the aiming for the Olympics l start it as a leave the house.
I did think about a more sheltered route, but like you say it involves trees so I swiftly decided against it. Glad I’ve done it now 😁
Well done on getting out. I bet there’s a lot of us that’ll be getting a run in today before the storm tomorrow! As for tracking... I always started strava (didn’t have a watch at the time) off as I started my warm up walk and stopped it after the cool down. It’s not until I graduated that I started tracking the actual ‘runs’
Well done for getting that run in before tomorrow. 👏
As to tracking, I have been switching from warm up walk to running and back to walk tracking but it is a faff as my jacket sleeves have those thumb holes and then I have to try and reach my watch. However I get an overview of all the days activity which is good. I look forward to warmer weather where I have less clobber.
Thank you. With you in mind I started the timer as I finished my warm in walk. This meant I was stationary as I put phone away but it seemed to work. I then stopped at the 30 minutes with 4.18km showing. Hey ho...progressing from snail to slug pace.
Well done on completing the run. I'm supposed to be running Monday evening and according to the forecast the wind should have dropped but I'll wait and see. I track from beginning of warm up to end of cool down but am thinking that once I'm running for 30 minutes I'll probably just track the run.
Also tempted to go and run today... but that would means back to back runs! Yikes. Although, yesterday was only 2.5k, so maybe I can get away with that?
Only ever start my apps going when I start my run. The warm up and cool down walks are important, but I never count them as part of the run!
I’m going to start doing the same. My pace should improve, that’s for sure!
I track the whole lot because my tracker gives me the exercise calories on MyFitnessPal.
Guess what, I really hadn’t paid attention to the weather! 😱
Edited: I was thinking of going without a rest day. But no. I’m going to take extra easy if needs be because I walk daily and noticed my hip was tight. I’ve already done two hours of gardening today.
You do right, running back to back is a no no! I’ve been having 2 rest days so was able to bring my run forward. Maybe it won’t be as bad as they think.
If it’s not, I’ll get out there, for sure. But I don’t mind waiting as I’ve been meaning to do a Pilates video from YouTube. If it’s awful that’ll be a sign.
Well done on your run today Wenderwoo.
I have a similar problem weather-wise, as I am due to run w5r3 tomorrow 🌬🌧💨.
I have to do 'rugby-mum-cheering-on' duty tomorrow morning first before I run and I really don't fancy sharing either of those activities with the gale force winds and driving rain of Storm Ciara!!
On the recording issue, I am like you and have always started Strava at the start of the warm up walk and stopped it at the end of the cool down walk. I will probably switch to recording the run only bit after graduation (🤞🏼) as I would like to prepare for a park run when I pluck up the courage to do one.
Great decision to get out today Wenderwoo while the weather was calmer.
Tracking the running , I used to like you start the tracking at the beginning of the warm up walk then stop at the end of the cool down . As of July last year I now only track the running part 😁
