Hello! Anyone got any tips for hot weather running gear (for a middle-aged woman - so no crop tops 😉)

Hi there, I began my C25K in snow earlier this year... yesterday I ran another 5K consolidation run and nearly boiled to death! I think I’ve got my top half sorted - it’s the bottoms I need most help with. I have a pair of baggy, lightweight, breathable running shorts... but with my stick legs, I look more like Stanley Matthews than I’m comfortable with. My usual leggings though, are just causing me to overheat to the point of discomfort. Any brand suggestions or ideas welcome please, thank you!! 😊

I boiled to death with you yesterday too whilst running...I could run naked and still be boiling hot (then most probably get arrested) 👮‍♀️🚓 😂

I wear M & S running leggings on the bottom half - I’m not that brave enough to wear shorts. My legs don’t overheat whilst wearing them and I’m at an age where nearly everything else does 😊

And I’ve got my top sorted - breathable sports bra and (baggy-ish!) breathable vest... it’s behind my knees where I chafe!! 😳

A skort.. or capris...some good deals online ..and some good t shirts for running at Aldi or Lidl..closer fitting is slightly better for running than bagginess:)

Thank you!! A skort!! BRILLIANT idea... I have these for walking - hadn’t thought they might make them for running too... will google now! And yes re Aldi/Lidl running tops - already a fan!

Try the 2in1 shorts that are skin fit lycra stuff underneath and normal shorts on top. I got a Karrimoor pair cheap in sports direct.

I didn’t even know there was such a thing - thought that was people wearing long pants under short shorts!! Will deffo check them out - seems a very practical solution. Thank you.

The most important item is a hat. I wet mine before I go out. Keep your head cool and your body will thank you for it.

Yes, I thought about a hat yesterday too!! I was running in the woods, so not too much direct sun... do you wear a peaked cap?

in reply to Kertesz

Yes, anything that covers your head will do. You just have to respect it. Can't beat running in the woods/shade. I've worked in Australia and they drill this into you over there.

I gave two caps..big brim..sun and rain useful

I wear very lightweight running shorts, I have quite slim legs too but when running in the heat moisture-wicking shorts are the best, I live in Cyprus where even at 0600 the temp can be almost 30 degs and when it comes to comfortable hot weather running, I care less about how I look than how I feel :-D

I have to say, I felt the best in my baggy shorts... light and free etc... so nice to feel the breeze on my skin etc. Maybe you’re right - I just need to park my vanity (even though I did feel like a geek school boy on sports day!!) x

Haha! yep! felt like that this morning too but quite frankly, don't care because I feel GREAT! afterwards ;-)

Aren’t you MELTING?!!!! x

Yes! 😂😂 I don’t possess anything more suitable yet n it didn’t really matter as I was ok until the weather got warm. Definitely need something more appropriate that doesn’t cost a fortune as I’m losing weight n don’t want to buy more expensive stuff till I’m nearer my goal weight xx

My under armour Capri compression tights are fab and great for the in between weather, as you get a bit of breeze around the lower leg :) they have a fair bit of stretch so would last you a while whilst you loose weight. They are quality make so people won't be able to see the colour of your pants!! EBay or an UA outlet shop are the best. I never pay full price as happy to have last season colours :)

In keeping with fairy steps, how about a tutu?? 🤷‍♂️ It was good enough for the vicar after all 😜😂

Kertesz profile image
Kertesz in reply to Cfc55

Yes... but are tutus aerodynamic, eh?! That’s the sticking point...!

😂 I guess strictly not 🙄, always a flaw in my cunning plans 🤦‍♂️

Are you still running, btw?!

Having a week off. Got ankle pain that isn’t clearing up and felt my hamstring tighten on my last run, so thought it best to have a wee break 🙂! Back on Saturday at parkrun 5k chomping at the bit 😂

I have hamstring-pain empathy... strained mine last week... did Adriene’s Yoga for Hamstrings on YouTube several times (‘you gotta love your hammies!!!’)... Found it v helpful. Might be worth a try?!! (‘Fairies?! Yoga?!! What IS she suggesting...’. *Thinks the Scottish man*)

😂 omg I’m scared to open any messages from you, never know what’s coming next 😂! I actually did think of yoga when I was having knee pain (did I ever mention the knee pain 🤔), but the thought of me in a leotard didn’t appeal 😂! I proper did my hammy a few years ago, never felt pain like it 😩! Circumstances were a bit embarrassing like, it was while I was running in the dads race at the kids school sports 🤦‍♂️! They’ve never let me forget it 😂

I lucked out & saw some capri’s on Decathlon which claimed to be for really hot weather. Their own brand, I think, and have an aerated strip down each side. At about £13 I wasn’t expecting much but they are good. Fabric breathes but doesn’t give way or show through. There’s a good waist band at the top with a zip pocket. And they really are cooling.

That’s funny!! You could just wear tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt for yoga though... looking like Borat isn’t <essential>...

I am wearing M&S running capris. My legs are ok as long as my ankles aren’t too warm. But I like the idea of those 2 in 1 shorts. But wrong side of 60 to wear short shorts! 🏃🏻‍♀️😊

I’ve just ordered some longish 2-in-1 shorts... I know what you mean about the ‘short short’ thing!!

Knittingrunner in reply to Kertesz

Ooh that sounds hopeful. Let us know what they are like? Who makes them? 😊

They are some Nike ones off eBay - probably from ‘the olden days’ when modesty prevailed!! 😂

Lol. Well good luck with them. 😊

The key is to be comfortable. Wear whatever makes you feel good and confident and always bear in mind that you are invisible to near all of the world's population. You run. Nobody looks at runners. I wear basketball gear although, l admit, in London anything goes. However, at one stage l passed a security check at Stansted airport wearing an LA Lakers yellow top and (God is my witness), nobody cared. Do your own thing, it's your thing after all.

You are so right!! Thank you! I have since got this sorted - the skort, the two-in-one shorts... and... a molten silver running vest, neon orange wind jacket... big, alien headphones... my husband says he feels like he’s heading to a 1970s night club when he comes out running with me!! And I’ll keep an eye open for you next time I’m at Stansted!!
