Hi I am 68 and decided this morning to make 5k running my goal. I have two Irish Setters who will love to run with me, we already walk around 10 miles a day, but I need to up my aerobic fitness, tried cycling but not really enamoured. Haven’t run since school days, and that was to get fit for hockey, so not sure how it’s going to go. Wish me luck!

Great decision. Welcome aboard. Slow and steady as you go. That walking is only going to help. Enjoy your journey

Well done to you Setters on starting your running journey with C25K, as a cyclist and walker, I have been doing those two exercises for over 60 years I know the difference between cycling and walking, I only started with C25K in April and graduated in June, 3 weeks after my 72nd birthday. Running compared to cycling is much more intensive, I can cycle for about an hour before getting a bit tired, depending on hills of course, with running I got quite tired within 3 minutes, especially at the start of my running journey with C25K, but I do enjoy both, good luck to you, the mantra motto for all runners is "slow and steady", good luck.

I am also 68 and today after just two months of the programme completed my graduation run this morning. The key is slow slow slow and stick to the programme - it really works. Enjoy your journey I know I did. Best of luck

No reason why it shouldn't go really well. I am only two years younger than you and on my way to 10k now after starting c25k at the end of May. Just take the runs really slowly and you should be absolutely fine. You might get the odd squeaky joint or muscle on the way, particularly early on. Bags of good advice on this site whenever you need it. 🏃🏃‍♀️

Welcome, and congratulations on starting...it's a great thing to do and I know you will enjoy every step of the way - well there will be tough times, but they're soon forgotten. We're all here willing you on...and as the others have said take it 'slow and steady'. You will be amazing, you are amazing already, you've got off the couch 😀. PS I'm 70, graduated in May and still running!! 🌻 Happy running 🙂

You don't need luck- just listen to Laura and obey! All the best anyway.

The programme really works, follow it earnestly and you’ll be fine. I’m 65 and started running in April now doing 10k easily. Good on you and your dogs woof woof.

I'm 68 too. Best thing I did in the last 20 years is starting C25K in April.

As you say, the improvement in aerobic health is well worth the effort, but for me, the camaraderie of this forum and the Parkrun mob is the highlight.

Hi Setters

Beautiful dogs. Goodness 10 miles a day is a massive dog walk. You must be very fit already.

I'm on W7. 61 years old and overweight. Was obese to 2 months ago. I do what I believe is called the running shuffle. Its a jog. Very slow. A trot. For the first few weeks my 'running' was slower than my brisk walking. I have a border collie so walk briskly everyday with her. I noticed last week, W6, that my speed seems to have increased. It certainly doesn't feel faster but the distance covered is greater in the time. My advice is not to worry about speed at all. Go at what is to you a comfortable pace that enables you to still have a conversation. I talk to the dog. I do c25k every 2nd day as the dog walk and walk as usual the inbetween days. I dont enjoy the trotting bits but determined. I do enjoy the achievement of completing each run day without having to stop running until Laura tells me to. Very proud to trot 25 minutes yesterday. Hope i don't fall now. Week 1 was the hardest as the weather was warm and I was rather breathless and hot.

Good luck x

Yes I am walking fit that's for sure, but aerobically I can struggle as have seasonal asthma, and had a fungal infections in my lungs which left me with a few non working air sacs. But I can’t walk any faster than my top speed unless I look like a constipated race walker, and although I don’t usually worry what I look like, even I do have my limits 😂
