Shrek Got Me Out of Bed

I lay in bed procrastinating this morning. I knew I was supposed to be running, but it was one of those “meh” days and I was feeling like I just couldn’t be bothered. Mr Raz delivered me a cuppa with a cheery, “Aren’t you running this morning?” I pretended to be asleep, but he was on to me, “If you’re asleep I’ll take the tea away.”

I grunted something indecipherable and the tea was left on my bedside while he went to do something really important (probably checking Twitter).

After a few minutes he came back. I was about to settle down for a top up snooze, “Didn’t you have a new playlist you wanted to run too?” he reminded me.

And that was the jolt I needed to get me out of bed and ready to run.

The new playlist was created yesterday and I was looking forward to listening to a mixture of tracks all inspired by Shrek! I’d heard a Monkees number on my 60s playlist the other day and was reminded of the song I’m a Believer... this reminded me of Shrek... which reminded me of a number of different songs I’d enjoyed in the movies... and so the new playlist was born.

My kit was on without faffing and I was out the door. The morning weather was neither one thing or the other, but my new tunes were putting a spring in my step.

As I broke into my run Best Years of Our Lives came on and a grin spread across my face. It’s really upbeat and I was singing along as I ran, much to the amusement of the dog walkers in the park.

There were so many good tracks and quite a few of them jumping up and down in my mind asking to have their lyrics rewritten. Half way round I was puffing up one of my hills. It was a bit of a struggle but helpfully the Proclaimers started crooning, “I’m on my way from misery to happiness.” I could see the top of the incline was not that far, and yes I was on my way from the misery of the hill to the happiness of running on the flat and into the woodland.

My legs were feeling fatigued, but Right Said Fred decided to join me and a new version of their song emerged - only because I was definitely not looking too sexy for my shirt or any other item of clothing I was wearing.

I’m too tired for my run,

Too tired for my run

So tired legs burn.

And I’m too tired for this song

Too tired to run on

My energy’s gone.

🙁

I’m a runner, I’m not feeling keen,

And I do my little run on the footpath,

Yeah on the footpath, on the footpath yeah,

I drag my little feet along the footpath.

👟 👟

I’m too tired want my car,

A massage in a spa

I’m running too far.

And I’m too sweaty for my hat,

Hair’s messy in my hat,

At least the path’s flat.

🧢

‘Cos I’m a runner, the woodland’s so green

Now I’m running along to the small park.

Got my breath back, in the small park yeah,

Got my energy back in the small park.

🏃🏽‍♀️

The rest of my run was great. And I loved my play list which I thought I’d share as there were some good tunes which could help if you’ve lost your mojo.

I have a very low boredom threshold so I have to have new playlists to run to every now and again. Glad you liked it.

Love this idea! Love your playlist!

The Shrek films had really good sound tracks, which was where I got all the songs from.

Thanks, I often find myself making up new lyrics to a song as I run. It helps take my mind off the effort involved in running. :-)

Fabulous... go you !!!!!

This is really weird ... I think... ages and ages ago I did a similar thing in a post using a Right said Fred song! And... spookier....I use The Proclaimers.... I'm on way.... when I am running up the hill in the fields!!!!

Maybe we shall all morph into each other eventually :)

A great post.... :) xxxx

Glad you liked them Equi-geek . I often end up making new lyrics as I'm running along. Last week's was Johnny B. Goode.

I had forgotten all the great tunes from the Shrek films. Do you mind if I "borrow" your playlist and compile it on Spotify when I get a bit of time? I'm feeling the need to run to some Shrek as well 😆

Razouski profile image
Razouski in reply to SaskAlliecat

Of course SaskAlliecat help yourself to my play list. I use Deezer but I know several other people on her such as Hidden use Spotify, so if you do compile it maybe you can share it. Deezer had a couple of Shrek soundtrack type of albums, but I decided to put together my own list so that I got the original tracks in the main (apart from Puss-in-Boots and Donkey's Vida Loca which I used - it was great hearing Eddie Murphy/Domkey telling me to keep going lol).

Happy running. :-)

Thanks Raz! I will definitely post a link once a get it done. Spotify had a few Shrek based playlists but yours was better so thought I would compile it on there. Can’t wait to run to it.... hopefully this weekend 🤞

Here it is, Spotified 😁, except I couldn't find the Puss in boots/Donkey version of Livin' la Vida local so had to go with Ricky Martin's 😢

Ran an interval workout today to this playlist. It was AWESOME! I had to wear different running shorts today to save my preferred longer shorts for my long run Sunday in forecasted scorching heat and I felt my inner thighs chafing half way through the run. The great tunes helped me power through. It was an out and back route so there was no shortening the run but at least I had great tunes to distract me, especially as the chafing was worse through the speed part of the runs 😖

I'm glad to know you loved the playlist too - sorry to hear about the chaffing with your short shorts. I haven't ventured out in running shorts - still in my Capris, but I think I need to get some. Good luck for your long run on Sunday.

SaskAlliecatGraduate in reply to Razouski

Thanks Raz. It's only a 7 mile run, nothing like your last long run, but longer than I've run in a few months. It'll be good to get back to some longer runs again. I'm wishing I wore my thin capris today but it is so muggy and warm even by 8 am lately, I run in as little as still deemed appropriate for a 44 year old out in public 😲😂. But I'm not complaining about the heat after the bitterly long, cold winter I had this year!

Thanks for posting the playlist! I’ve stolen a few ideas to add to my lists. I also get bored easily so currently have six, 40-45 mins playlists on rotation.

Razouski profile image

Glad to have helped. I also have a really low boredom threshold so I also have several different lists which I play on rotation, and now that some of my runs are much longer I have to have some longer playlists.
